The Altcoin Thread

I'm not solo mining. Just wondering about switching pools. With my mining power being so low, is it better to just stick with switching between ftc/wdc pools or would I be better off switching to hashcow or multipool. And if so, which switching pool do people prefer

multipool isn't really worth it unless you plan on holding a bunch of oddball coins because you get small amounts that aren't worth even sending to an exchange. I would certainly avoid middlecoin with that low of power. If it were me I would probably just stick with a good LTC pool and call it good until I can add more to it.

thanks!!! I kinda figured with such a low powered card mining on a switching pool likely wouldn't be worth it but I wanted to see what others had to say

i would mine doge if i were you. you will get more than 0.0005 a day like litecoin, and its community is great.

I'm switching between ftc and wdc. Sticking primarily with WDC because I keep thinking something might happen with that one. FTC just doesnt seem to be going anywhere

i sold all my ftc for doge,it wasnt moving at all

LMAO DOGE will never be more than a really bad joke and you kill brain cells just trying to read anything in the DOGE community.

For a small miner I would suggest mining in a coin you have long term faith in. Nobody in their right mind actually has long term faith in DOGE.

FTC has lost traction and development just isn't really there on it. WDC has developers and ideas but will be forever stained by so many pump and dumps, many of which were its developers.

LTC profitability really isn't that bad right now its just shit compared to what it was.

You can either gamble like crazy like I did on your way to building a farm or just keep the lil guy chugging along. In that case if you don't want to "work" with exchanging and juggling coins I would suggest staying on LTC or WDC.

Oh yeah? its marketcap thinks otherwise. http://coinmarketcap.com/

Ill admit i thought it was stupid at first, but its community is pretty strong and growing, already at like 28000 subscribers on reddit, more than litecoin i think. The goal for doge is to not make it another fiat replacement but a tipping currency. Think about if soundcloud or bandcamp accepted it. Others could tip other individuals with doge and either have it auto convert to usd of keep the doge. You are only saying this because of the name. if it was called something like tipcoin then you wouldn't be downing it so much since it doesnt have a dog in it.

It's actually looking good considering the hype around it has long died off, yet it's still trading top 5 in USD market volume every day (sometimes as high as 3), and still the coin with the highest number of transactions every day. And every other alt that tried to copy Doge has pretty much died off.

DogeCoin is now going beyond the meme, and some of you are failing to realize that. Too many mining noobs believe that the next big coin needs to be, "some new algorithm that isn't a LiteCoin Scrypt clone". This is one of the biggest fallacies miners constantly reiterate. All a coin needs is wide adoption and community support. Most LTC clones only have the latter going for them, where as DogeCoin actually has the former happening as well.

No I am saying its entire community is stupid. regardless of the name the broken english hasn't left its community and you will kill brain cells just trying to read the community.

CURRENT marketcap is stupid since my statements were about the long term relevance and CURRENT marketcap is just that... CURRENT. My statements are and always have been that LONG TERM it is stupid to believe in that coin.

DOGE is more of a myspace. In its day myspace was insanely huge and insanely popular and got plenty of us laid but where is it now? Fads come and go just dont be stupid enough to have actual money invested in it thinking its a long term vehicle for your cash.

I have probably mined more DOGE than anybody on this forum so I am greatful for the kind of cash it has provided me. It is responsible for paying for a lot of things around here. I will not hold any DOGE for more than 48 hours. Most of the time I cash out of it multiple times a day. If I tell somebody to mine DOGE I will certain advise them not to bother with the 50/50 plan that many use on other coins.

Yep, for better or worse, DOGE's marketcap has completely eclipsed FTC. WDC appears to be on a slow downward trend yet again after that last pump and dump spike. It will be interesting to see how DOGE fairs against WDC and XPM in the coming weeks.

The dogecoin subreddit actually has more subscribers than any cryptcurrency subreddit except for Bitcion.

And what makes you think WDC or LTC has better long term? Are you solely basing your opinion off of the inside jokes that pertain to doge? Both you or I have no idea what can happen market wise to any of these coins, all we can do is speculate. But being barely a month old its not doing too bad. Everyone thought it would die in a week or two but instead it was going up while other coins stayed stagnant. I only have about 1.4mil doge right now that ive mined but i am just going to hold it. If it dies tomorrow then all i lost was my time.

Also, I agree on FTC and WDC. WDC just seems like an improved version of FTC in almost every way possible. The only thing FTC has going is that it's on BTC-e, and that's the only thing keeping it alive, imo. FTC has been around for so long yet I see nothing in development for it. It just seems like it's going nowhere, and with so many alts making a push to become relevant this year, FTC could really die off if it continues doing nothing.

I like mining WDC. FTC I've stopped. I see no reason to mine it with WDC just seeming like the better alternative.

BTC, LTC, WDC, and DOGE are what I'll be holding over the next year. That doesn't include whatever new alts I may mine. But those I will likely look into trading them into BTC early on after I've mined some at low difficulty. I'm trying to setup my crypto portfolio to be 50% BTC and 50% everything else.

I'd consider link to be a pretty substantial contribution to FTC...

Starting to consider stopping. Power bill price increase is getting close to fucking $150 with just 2 7950's. Fuck this California piece of shit electricity cost, and the mining this month has been pretty bad.

yeah once the doge block reward is cut in half on feb 14 i will probably take a break from minig unless something crazy happens. I already have a good stockpile going i can sit on.

I am in the same boat. If I can pay for 1 290 with it, then it will make me happy

It doesn't just drop in half February 14, I think it cuts in half again in April.

If it remains popular come May, well then it will survive.

Yep, block halving is the final test it has. I'm actually hoping DOGE drops back down to around 30 satoshi because then it should have no problem near doubling in price when that happens. It's been at 50 satoshi plenty of times now.

$675 power bill sitting here as I prepare to hookup some more video cards... my next power bill is likely to be in the $900 area and I'm going to keep on going until what I bring in is less than double my power bill.

I'm preparing to build a rack over at my inlaws once I am confident I've maxed what I can do here. Guys once you get things figured out and rolling on conservative timings things can run quite smooth. The only lockups I've had is when I get overly aggressive with my timings.

Has anyone tried flashing R9 270X bioses onto 7870s? I've read the 270X can go up to 450 kH/s, where as I have trouble just hitting 400 kHs on 7870s. But even with similar memory speeds, I'm not quite there so maybe the timings are better optimized for scrypt mining on the 270Xs?

Okay looking at the schedule, the last reward reduction for dogecoin is January 2015

It cuts in half every other month until then.

Then it becomes 10k per block flat rate until May 2015 when the last block is solved

So the answer to dogecoin popularity is not far off. I am curious to see what happens.

If it hits a penny per coin I can finally buy a Tesla. If not, well nothing ventured...

Is this you? LOL https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375374.0

I wonder what their power bill is.

You must live in cold climate with $900 in power, the heat would be insane.

Yep,the block halving will be the true test for the coin,it will either kill it or help it. or absolutely nothing will happen.

*sigh*

Volume means absolutely NOTHING especially when you have a coin which eclipsed the total circulated coin count of Bitcoin and Litecoin within the first WEEK of mining.

What matters is whether or not it garners as much commercial acceptance as Bitcoin (and even Litecoin, which arguably is laughable currently). The one thing that Dogecoin has going for it is there SEEMS to be an active community that sort of wants it to succeed. And that's the difference between it and coins like WorldCoin, EarthCoin, FeatherCoin, etc. The devs seem to care about the coins more than the community does in an "if you build it, they will come" way. With Doge, it's the other way around - a solution in search of a problem.

Wait, can you clarify how 2 7950s eat that much juice. My power rate is pretty high where I live ($0.19 per KW/H) and running 1x280X, 1x6970, 2x5830, and 4x5770 all day worked out to a $130 increase in my power bill.

Most of the cards run 24/7, except a pair of 5770s that are in my HTPC. They get shutdown when watching TV or whatever.

You should undervolt your cards (I do on all of mine) as far as they are stable on stock (or near stock) clocks. The power consumption really drops by lowering the voltages.

280X: went from 1.200V to 1.019V
6970: went from 1.100V to 1.029V
5830s: went from 1.163V to 1.030V
5770s: went from 1.200V to 1.000V

Roughly 550 watts for 2 7950's in my system (3770k, quite a few hard drives etc. I'm moving it into my W3520 and X58 classified next week with only 1 SSD). 37 cents per kWH. That comes out to ~$150. Getting raped for electricity isn't fun.

When I under clocked my 3770k power increased somehow (I'll give it another try without turning off cores maybe, but shouldn't do much)

My twin frozr runs at .950V, which is really low, while my Gigabyte 7950 used more power when I did the bios mod that changed voltage from 1.250 to 1.090, and temps also increased so I reverted that.

Have you measured the change in power consumption for you?

Have you measured the change in power consumption for you?

IIRC, My 280X went down 65w, 6970 went down 50w, 5830s went down 40w, 5770s went down 35-40w each. I used one of those killawatt meters and measured mining power pull from the wall before and after tweaking. FWIW, my PSUs are all Bronze cert, not gold. Corsair TX650, Antec NEO ECO 620c, Corsair CX series.

It came out to about 350-360watt savings on power, so undervolting saving me about $50/month ($600/year) on my electric bill. That's not to mention it's a lot easier on the cards too. The VRM doesn't have to handle as much power, and heat production is lower, which also allows lower fan speeds.

Like I said, my Twin Frozr is already downvolted (stock is 1.037, its down to .950). That did cause a drop by around 30-40w, but this Gigabyte doesn't budge whatsoever even though it says 1.090 vs 1.250. Downvolting the CPU didn't help at all either, just caused the system to crash while power usage wasn't any better. My PSU is one of the Silverstone Strider Gold series, so that's not the issue either.

Yeah I am running calculations on power, and for me it seems that max overclocks are worthwile still.

My electric is only .07 :p

Lol. You guys are lucky. Geting Billed for .18$ per kw. So far been able to get the right hash/power (Getting 1.6mh @ 630 watts) without the Jet engine fans from 290s. Just need to wait for the USB riser to split them apart so it would quiter lol.

Volume in USD value.

Volume being crazy high is only an indication of how much is being traded in the coin. I have seen some absolutely crap coins have insane daily USD volume like CENT about a month ago for a while.

Volume simply means there's a ton of people selling or day trading it and is not useful for anything other than being able to quickly dump it. DOGE is being day traded right now because its value is not very stable.

I don't want to argue the validity of any long term investment in a coin because hell even BTC is gambling with your money. Treat these coins like you would walking into a casino. If you can't just light that pile of cash on fire then don't be in the game.

I would actually argue that lately its value has been rather high in comparison to a few weeks ago. That would be one reason people want to sell it right now. And then of course, there are people willing to buy it because they believe it can actually go higher. That remains to be seen, but since DOGE is much more of a community driven coin than most, if enough of the community has the willpower, then it may actually happen.

EDIT: And then there's also the possibility that there has also been discussion elsewhere about the impending block reward reduction looming and people are preparing for it by buying more leading to more people selling because the price is going up.

Hopefully the community can sustain Doge :p its up today around 60.

Whoa I just saw it hit 65 on cryptsy. Hasn't been that high since December.

Wow it even touched 71 for a moment an hour ago.

Difficulty is also at an all time high though, it is over 610

An hour later it is actually holding at 71 - it actually exhausted all sell orders below 70 on cryptsy

Now all it has to do it go up ten times in value and I can finally buy a Tesla. Ha.

If it indeed will go up x10 in value I can recover then lol. Saw it at 77 (Vicurex).

I was contemplating buying a few DOGE when it was at 53. That was last night and I fell asleep thinking about it. Woke up this morning and it was 74 (Cryptsy).

I think I jinxed it by thinking about buying at 74. Every time I buy into something, it drops. Maybe just me thinking about buying DOGE put a curse on it.
