System Shock 3

I don't understand why people are so unwilling to go back and try graphically dated games they missed out on. Gameplay > Graphics any day for me, while it doesn't mean I'll go and be playing Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, or Wasteland anytime soon, SS2's graphics are not so bad that they are unbearable and they have texture packs and other mods that have enhanced them. Given a choice, I'd play SS2 again over Bioshock any day of the week. Hell, I spent hours trying to figure out how to get it to run on XP machines (affinity needs to be set to only one CPU) and if it weren't for network desyncs, we'd still be playing network coop at LAN parties to this day.

I keep an old Voodoo2 SLI machine going just for playing the old games ( i'm playing SS2 again right now),

its funny.. if you compare games as what they are today and the games that were made around SS2's time (1998-2002).. the comparison is pretty stark in that games today are hugely simplified over those old PC games.

everyone talks about how "indepth" todays PC games are and they are nothing compared to what games used to be.. PC games today really are pretty much equal to console games in their simplicity.

you look at games like Deus Ex, SS2, Falcon 4.0 (the ultimate combat flight sim), Battlezone (loved those 2), all the janes games, freespace 2, the Xwing series.. the complexity and depth in those games was pretty astounding..

now you look at todays game, and the most complex game i played lately are all RTSs (Sins of Solar, Theatre of War etc..). and those just tend to be complex (without the depth)

because of that i think i've played more old games this year than newer games..(last 3 years) .

there is such a huge library of good games out from the past 10 years, i'm not even sure how many new games in the future i'll buy.. Just not worth it gameplay wise.. (although Fallout 3 i'll probably pick up).

Last time I tried to use the rebirth mod and I ended up with invisible monkeys beating me down after about 2-3 hours in. Im assuming that the chimps arent supposed to be invisible, man that just killed it for me at the time. It really did look promising before that.

I remember the first time I went up to one of the monkeys thinking it was a neutral unit and after I turned around it started attacking me which did startle me because I did not expect it.

I still never played SS2...I remember looking at the box back in the day thinking it looked sweet but never ended up buying it...I'm gonna poke around and see if I can find a copy somewhere

I'd be interested in someone explaining why Bioshock isn't as good, I haven't played that yet, it has the same concept, and if anything the setting is ingenious, certainly the graphics a far superior. All I know is SS2 scared the crap out of me . I played the demo for Bioshock and will buy it soon. Is it just that Bioshock isn't as scary? I'd like to know because I keep seeing people here saying Bioshock is good, but doesn't hold a candle to SS2. (something like that.)

I can try to explain in my opinon why it isn't as good. I tried really hard to like Bioshock, but that made me hate it even more in the end. I finished another playthrough of SS2 the day before I played Bioshock, so I feel I can describe the differences as I saw them pretty good. As many others have said it lacks the RPG elements of SS2, inventory system, weapon degradation, difficulty and variety. Bioshock has obviously better graphics and an atmosphere to compare to SS2 but nothing else. The indepth options of leveling up your character are gone. You can't upgrade your strength, endurance, psionics, agility, cyber affinity, repair, maintain, research, O/S upgrades, any weapon proficencies, hacking skills....etc. The only options for upgrade in bioshock are more health, mana, and spells(plasmids).

Another thing was the weapons. IMO the weapons in Bioshock had a horrible feel to them, they felt plastic, underpowered and unaccurate. The weapons in the dated game SS2 felt much better than Bioshock's.... not acceptable.

Difficulty in Bioshock was a joke. Automatic regeneration when you die to the closest vita chamber for no penalty whatsover. At least in SS2 you had to find the regen chamber and if you didn't find it before you died on that level you were gone for good. Plus it took money for everytime you were reconstructed.

Inventory system. I loved picking up objects and examining them, able to research some items, find game systems and play minigames, repairing weapons, modding weapons all in your inventory. Also depending on your strength would be how much you could carry. Plus you could wear armor and equip other upgrades as well. Bioshock has no inventory.

Repetitive. I've played through SS2 many times and have never gotten bored with all ways you can play through the game. In Bioshock I couldn't even get past the plot twist before I was bored to tears with it and got a sick feeling in my stomach everytime I tried to advance further.

In the end Bioshock was a standard FPS with good graphics and atmopshere and no RPG elements. I'm not saying that's bad but that's not what I thought we were getting. The game "could" of been so much more than just another FPS.

This was how I felt the games differ. The reason I bought Bioshock was because it was advertised to being the Spiritual Successor to SS2. I felt cheated from what 2k made the game sound like. I will not be purchasing another one of these "dumbed down" games again. Now if they did release a true FPS/RPG SS3 I would pay $150 or even more for it, just to have one more good FPS/RPG before the genre is consumed by this plague. But I don't think we'll ever see and games with the quality and massive depth of SS2 or Deus Ex ever again.

For all the talk of Bioshock not being a formal sequel to SS2, the gameplay was absolutely identical, from the audio diaries to the combination locks, to the vending machines, "hacking", running around with next-to-no ammo, security cameras, security stations, the ghostly visions, gun turrets, even the plasmids and the "power to the people" machines. I loved SS2 as much as anyone (except when it moved onto the alien bit) but if Bioshock is considered even a minor let-down as spiritual successor or whatever, I can only imagine a genuine sequel would too unless they changed up the formula, and then people would just complain it wasn't the same.

ive never understood why people dont like bioshock as much, I thought it was awesome.

people who loved the greatest game of all time System Shock 2.....thought BIOSHOCK would be up to par with it

if u never played SS2 i could see Bioshock being a great game to u

ignorance is bliss

Along with SS3, they need to make a new Thief game. Make it cross-platform with X360/PS3 if necessary. The consoles have evolved enough it shouldn't hold the game back the way Thief DS was gimped thanks to Xbox.

Looking Glass Studios kicked ass.

1) I played SS2 and love it
2) I loved both

I haven't played Bioshock yet, but I remember being dissapointed by SS2, thinking it was a great game but it wasn't as good as SS, the greatest game of all time.

you are the first to ever say they were disspointed in SS2 in all my years on the internet

I don't think we will ever see a game like SS1/SS2 again(I could be wrong though). The idea of what makes a game great has changed in the minds of developers as well as players for the most part. Alot of the people that developed these games have moved on to other things for better or worse. I enjoyed Bioshock quite a bit, but I went into it knowing that it was not a "true" successor to SS2 but still a great game imho.
