Supreme Commander Thread!

Hey I've tried to keep up with the thread, but I was wondering if the latest beta version of Supreme Commander would still bring a computer like mine to its knees?

I've Updated my Nvidia drivers and even applied the "AI speedup patch" that was availible on certain sites, and my computer still grinds to a barely playable halt after about 30 to 45 minutes.

AMD 3500+
BFG 6800GT/OC
Asus A8V deluxe

I run similar specifications, but you don't mention how much RAM. I useualy get to the 1 hour mark, and I have 1.5 Gig.

got a message from fileplanet that they're gonna have a beta key blowout or something, any conformation?

Don't tell me this! I'll either
a)NOT GET a key and cry or
b)GET a key and never get anything done
:D

Ok that's wierd, I have 2 gigs and never noticed a slowdown... But I haven't played since 1.7, or whatever that second patch was.

20->21 (same day?)
21->27 the main AI/skirmish/LAN one
27->30 the one people bitched about no LAN hack with
30->38 last monday. Newest version.

My knowing all of those without looking up anything is kind've sad and pathetic.

Since I was one of the last people to grab the closed beta client from FP, I should be able to (finally!) install that...patch it up...and drive on, right?

2.7 :p

Lo all, my 1st post on Hard forums! :D

Been following this thread for a while and decided that I would give my opinion on the issues with slow down!

I have v2.7 with the AI/LAN patch and also the AI speed patch! but even with then I noticed shocking slow down with in 30-40min of play, with AI that is. Remove AI and all is well!

Fixed my issue of slow down by putting the unit cap to 50000. As the problem seemed to be that when the AI hit its unit limit it would just stop doing anything and at that point the game would become sluggish and then drop to a slide show with in a few minutes.

Granted I do not have a slow PC but I think the unit cap is the primery reason for the slow down on most peoples systems as they will not set a high unit cap due to proformance issues that come from a higher cap.

So yeah, this is definitely a Beta...first time i try to play the game and it hard locks and i have to reboot...

I go and defrag the HDD and update my vid card drivers (been forever since i did that) and tried again and successfully played a 2v2 match that lasted a little over an hour. And my team won thanks to my other teammate actually knowing how to play the game and having like 4 spider bots (unlike me, though i did help a little with a horde of Siege bots :D ) .

The game ran fairly well all things considered, but damn is it hard to keep up with everything  , i felt really overwhelmed by how much you could do in this game...but practice makes perfect i guess. All in all i liked it.

Oh and i tried playing another game after the second one and it locked up right after the commander teleported in, fortunately i was able to exit out of the game instead of having to restart my comp again.

You will get in the swing of things 5-7 games from your first. It took me a while as well to get into it. But once I got into it started to grow on me more :), I preordered it today.

I though I forgot to post something  (absentminded) but I have 1 gig and I can usuall y go about 45 minutes, or about 100 units before I really start to notice a slowdown. But either way I hope with this update (and further updates) it makes it more accessable/playable for people with older hardware. With statements like this ...anyone with a multicore CPU is going to get a boost as the game is multithread enabled (but not required). Pretty much all of Engineering at GPG have dual-proc or dual core machines and it does give you a performance edge at the current time in SupCom. This could easily change though. It makes me kind of worried.

I think I may have to upgrade if the slowdown continues, probably best just to wait until the retail game/final patch comes out and get a better idea of reccomended specs.

But in the end my question still remains, does it do anthing for slowdown?

Hey I have a dumb question........

The faders for Trees and stuff......when I move em all the way to the left it just seems to change the location of the trees instead of diminish them.....ermmm what do those sliders do lol

Oh and when you get wayyyyyyyyyyyyy into a dungeon....is there any easy way to exit? I have no friggin clue how to get out of the one I'm in lol

Now you have me curious even though it is probably a moot point with 3.8 being open beta. Mine started to bog at about 200 units. Hmm I will have to give it a try when my new video card comes in tomorrow and then upgrade to 3.8.

In reply to moetop post and Apocallypsetroll's quote,

I would say that Dual Core is a must for SupCom. I have it running on 3 machines and alright my main rig is very much head and shoulders above the other 2, but even then the other 2 systems run it very well. Althought as you might guess when the unit cap is set so high the game does start to slow down a fair bit on the lower end rigs.

proformance seems to be like so...

Main rig - Intel Core 2 duo 2.4ghz, 2gig DDR2 6400, HIS X1900+HIS X1900XTX.
Proformance is VERY good at 1920x1200 with settings on high. Game is playable with 7 AI and myself. (have had a few 3 hour games)

2nd rig - AMD FX55, 2gigs DDR 3200, ATi x1800xt.
Game is playable at native LCD res of 1280x1024 with settings on high but suffers from longer load times (expected) and as more units are produced (8 players) the game starts to get a little less responsive!

3rd rig - A64 4000+, 1gig DDR3200, ATi X850XTPE.
Proformance is good with 2vs2 but higher and the game becomes a slide show, most likely down to the 1gig of ram and slower graphics card! Would most likely be playable on a final build, hopefully. Turning off shadows and AA plus setting the texture detail to mid yields large gains in profromance on this system.

Anyone care to add there spec's and opinoins on the proformance?

EDIT: anyone know what key/button it is to rotate screen in Supcom? ment to be middle mouse but if thats the case mine does nothing!

not sure what you mean by rotate.
middle mouse is pan, alt+middle is to change angle and stuff

Main Computer: Intel e6600 @ 3.56ghz, 2gigs DDR2 PC6400, 8800GTS
Performance is excellent with all settings set to highest resolution at 1680x1050. I encounter no lag and can play 8 player games no problem. Computer runs this game like its fully optimzed and a piece of cake.

Second Computer: AMD Socket 754 3400+ @ 2.5ghz, 1gig of ram PC3200, 6800GT
Performance is decent if all settings are turned down to low or medium low. Cant play games bigger then 2v2 or I encounter lag and so downs. Game seems to lag after +700 units total on all sides in game. AI kills comp performance after a while.

is there a place, other than fileplanet, where i can DL the beta and patches?

yeah. Fileplanet. :)
Some torrent sites have the clients too, but I dont know if they have the 38/3.8 client up.

Is that a 6600 I assume? Also, what version of the game?

The reason I ask is that before my video card (7900GT) ate the dust, playing against 4 AI opponents would result in a total slowdown after a little over the hour mark. 3 AI players was not a problem after any length of time though. (This was with the 2.7 version and a so-called "AI Speed Patch" )

My system consists of: E6300@3.15ghz, 2GB DDR2 @ 900mhz, 7900GT, 74GB raptor, X-fi, etc.

I am wondering if perhaps the 4mb cache on the 6600 could make for a serious improvement versus the 2mb cache on my 6300 in this game.

Played 8 player online games... however out of those 8 players the majority of them lagged out and quit and my CPU took over for the AI.

i got almost the same as nullzero, less the OC and my vid card is 7950gt and i can play 8player max everything and the game looks badass! i love it when i launch the nuke and the enemy is like omg! hehe little beeping sound drives ppl mad!

Im running an older build 2.7 with LAN/skirmish AI and AI speed patch.

Im sure the lag on most peoples PC's, those who have a decent spec that is, is down to the unit cap being set low and the AI getting bogged down when it hits the unit limit!

without the unit limit at 500 all the systems I have can handle a game without slowdown (setting deppendent for lower rigs)

As for the 4mb vs 2mb on the Core 2 duo's I would have thought it would make a fair bit of diffrence but not as much as to cause any real big problems!

I only hope that If what people are saying about the improvements from older versions to 3.8 is ture then the final game will be silky smooth. By the time the game hits retail I will most likely have a quad core Kentsfield and if they turn out to be any good ATi's R600!

So bring on the completed game :D

Anyone else getting "Invalid Code" image when you're supposed to get your beta key?

It says my computer is blocking the image, and that I need to loosen my security settings. But, I've basically turned them off and I still can't get my code...

When I grabbed my code in FF, the image was blocked. When I switched to an IE window, it went right through.
