Supreme Commander Thread!

Awesome, got the key! I'll be seeing you guys on there tonight :)

Anyone know if there would be a problem with mismatched monitors? I've got a 19" and a 17" and I REALLY want to use both!

No, you can configure them independently. I haven't done a whole lot with it (since it cripples my fps) but I had it running on my 24" widescreen and my 19" 4:3 just fine.

as saan said, the display system is so versatile you can throw almost anything at it and be fine. Mismatched resolutions are not a problem.

If you are talking about dual screening both monitors you may have a problem unless you run both monitors at the same resolution. Last patch GPG broke the mismatch resolution setup for dual screening, I talked to GPG about it however and they said they were working on fixing it again. Hopefully they do it soon I miss playing on 1680x1050 and 1280x1024

So the system supports it but its broke ATM. :(
I wonder how the release is going to play 1920x1200 x2 (or 1920x1200+1600x1200, haven't decided yet) on a g80go...hopefully pretty well. But I fear not.

HHmmm, since they're both CRT's however, I should be able to use them both as long as they're the same res right?

I'm pretty sure it's already been answered in the thread somewhere, but how much more taxing is having the second monitor running? System in the .sig

It's pretty bad, at least in version 2.7

My x850xt can't handle it, running at 1280x1024 medium settings with 2 monitors. It goes from playable to smooth when I get rid of the 2nd monitor. I use 1 monitor to play SupCom.

so what's the concensus on performance? i haven't had a chance to play it on my comp yet and i'm curious what other people are getting.

my comp:

3800+ single core
single 6800 GT (had to sell the other D=)
gig of ram
gigabyte k8nxp-sli
2405 fpw

thanks in advance for the info!

I've been playing on an almost identical system for a bit, and although I'm not positive you will be able to play at native resolution the game should definitely be playable. Performance will definitely decrease if you try to play with a bunch of people or on large maps.

Lower setting on the lower resolutions should be ok for ya. I dont remember how the 6800u stacks up against an X1600xt, but thats about what I can do. 3200+/x1600xt/1GB.
Im wondering if its worth grabbing a 3800+ X2 just for the beta...since Ill have a whole new rig for the release.

is the game multi-threaded? cause i'm feeling it's about tiem for a new computer myself. c2d, g80, etc.

yup. To the 4th degree ;) Quad core gives a performance boost.

I am planning to upgrade to a quad core C2D sometime next year so I will be able to run this game with massive amounts of units :).

According to the master issue list--or at least one of them, the one you actually can view if you log into GPGNet--the game requires two ports to be opened: 6112 (UDP/TCP) and 9103 (TCP). While opening just 6112 does seem to help with connecting in general, opening 9103 seems to help with stability and perhaps a little tiny bit with speed...this is how I managed to survive two hours of your-ass-is-grass stomping (as in nukes and support commanders being flung about like maybugs--it was just sad) earlier.

2nd rig - AMD FX55, 2gigs DDR 3200, ATi x1800xt.
Game is playable at native LCD res of 1280x1024 with settings on high but suffers from longer load times (expected) and as more units are produced (8 players) the game starts to get a little less responsive!

Just wondering what Drivers you're using on that card I have the 256mb x1800xt and I get weird graphical corruption and hard locks whenever I get in game? Is this an Audigy issue perhaps?

Hi pigwalk,

Im using ATI's latest....8.11 and I have no issues, I did but it was done to the AI setting in the drivers try changing the settings and see what works best for you. If nothing else just set the drivers to defualts and see how it does.

I have had no issues with the Audigy drivers at all or sound in general.

D'oh!
Was about 30 minutes into a nice fields of isis 2vs2 and crashed. Had a nice metal stream, ally was doing well, had some T2 and T3 stuff up...and then sent an interceptor out to scout the enemy base and boom!, Good'bye! :(
/me is sad panda

Anyway, bump and anybody else from [H] get online and send me an IM so I can add ya to the [H]Clan.

Hi, i'm a n00b, I just wasted 3 hours trying to download the most recent beta version without having to pay subscription or anything. And if, by chance, someone else is trying to do the same thing, and they stumble across this forum, I want them not to have to battle their way through the seven shades of smoke that took up an entire afternoon.

So it's sort of a n00b's guide, for n00bs.

If there's an easier way and i've completely missed the point, someone post it... i will not let my afternoon have died in vain!

--------------------------------HOW TO GET THE CRACKED BETA 3.8 VERSION OF SUPREME COMMANDER--------------------------------

Prerequisites: a torrent downloader, a bunch of hard drive space.

Downloads:

1. Go here and start downloading the beta 2.0 version, using your torrent downloader.
2. Go here. This is the 2.0>2.7 patch. If you haven't used rapidshare before, you've gotta scroll down to the bottom and click "free". You'll have to wait for a counter to count down. But it shouldn't take too long.
3. Click here. This is a direct link to a download of the 2.7>3.0 patch.
4. Go here, and click on the top "Click here to download the torrent" button. This is the torrent for the 3.0>3.8 patch.
5. Click here. This is a direct link to the latest v3.8 skirmish/lan fix or whatever. All credit for this goes to Enkido over in the Subcom community at www.gamereplays.org, great job dude.

1. Run setup that you downloaded in download 1.
2. Run the patch you got in download 2.
3. Run the patch you got in download 3.
4. Run the patch you got in download 4.
5. extract and execute the fix from download 5 in the bin directory of supreme commander.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, that's it, hope this comes in handy and saves some people some time. If it's wrong at all, i would really appreciate someone to leave a comment about the correct method. I'm still downloading the last torrent, so haven't actually installed or patched any of it yet. This is just the instruction guide that i've picked up along my travels through all the various supcom forums.

Also, it's obviously gonna get outdated pretty quickly as new patches come out and new fixes get written by geniuses like Enkido.

Man, I can't wait til this game comes out. It will truly kick ass. And I haven't even played any of the beta yet. Rock!

3.9 skirmish/ai/lan patch.
The beta is open now, so instead of all that you can just head over to fileplanet and download the full version of 3.8. You may need to sign up for a fileplanet or gamespy account, although you do NOT need a paid subscription. Just create a free account if you do not have one. You also need to sign up for a beta key, although this is free as well.

Then, as you said, you can download the skirmish/lan/ai fix that you posted if you want to practice some by yourself or on a LAN. I backed up the files this patch modifies so that I can still play online and update to future versions.

I tried that first, but all the beta keys had run out or something... they wouldn't give me one!

Actually, there's probably hundreds of them posted all over the internet. omg. stupid. stupid. argh.

Omg.. Ive been waiting for this game since the beginning of the year... anyone know how to get the beta key? I looked all over fileplanet but cannot find out where to sign up for the key.

Damn I didn't realize that! Here's another hint though: download the full 3.8 version and then apply the ai/skirmish/lan patch you linked. Open the main executable for supreme commander, not the GPG client. If you do it this way, you will never be asked for a key code and you will be able to use skirmish mode for sure with AI, and possibly LAN play (haven't tried LAN).

ive installed the beta up to 2.7 and installed the crack.... but for some reason it will not let me select the skirmish?

have i missed something?

Are beta keys still avaliable? My friend registered for one while ago and has not recieved a response. Does using a fileplanet account form BugMe Not (registering is lame :) ) have anythign to do with this? And now I am hearing rumors that there really are not more keys to give out. Some "open" beta...

how do you get skirmish mode? cant seem to make anything work,,

fresh install on 2.0
patched it to 3.8 applied the crack from a few posts back...
run the game..

cant click on skirmish...

Hmm I dunno why this isn't working for people, I got the patch I'm using from this post. Install version 3.8, then download the patch from the above link. Extract patch.exe into "...\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Beta\Supreme Commander\bin\" and run it. Extract lua.scd into "...\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Beta\Supreme Commander\gamedata\". Now run SupremeCommander.exe.

Make sure that "patch.exe" is in the ..\bin\ directory when you run it.

To sign up for a beta key, go here.

ok... reading the posts on that other site... i have a question.. the patch file your meant to run is meant to say something once its completed.. but mine doesnt...

any ideas?

As of December 4, all of the open beta keys have been registered.* GPG was only aiming for a set number of beta testers so if you haven't gotten one yet, you'll have to wait for the next beta stage (if there is one) or retail.

Otherwise, as whrswoldo said, you can run 3.8 with the AI mod enabled against the computer. As long as you don't mind not playing against human opponents, this should work just fine.

ive found out why mine didnt run.... cos i copied the lua file it made the new one not work...

also does anyone no the cheats... i keep getting wooped...

Ahh didn't realize that :(

Nullzero: good to have played against you the other day. Damn T3 gunships put a hurt on me...

We need more peoples on the HC clan! Come and join us!

As soon as I get out of my dorms I'll try to connect. There's something fishy about the connections here that won't let me play online. I really need a new computer too, runs like crap on the very lowest of settings...

Dang. And I was hoping to see how badly Supreme Commander would own my system. Ahh well, gotta wait till it comes out then.

If its the system in your sig im guessing pretty hard. This game has a lot of optimization that still needs to be done.

I was originally running the game on a fairly dated system with a 2800+, 6800, and 1GB ram; it was barely playable at the absolute minimum settings. I dropped once 30 minutes or so into a 2v2 game because it felt like I was playing a screensaver; it was completely unplayable. My buddy who I play with regularly has a 3GHz P4, 9800PRO, and 1GB ram, and his stuff lags similarly. In the last game we played I blew up one of the enemy commanders and the resulting huge explosion lagged his comp for a good 5 minutes straight. By "lagged" I mean everyone sits there staring at a frozen screen waiting for his comp to catch up.

From what I can tell, this game benefits hugely from having multi-processors/cores. When I switched to my dual 2.3 xeon machine with the same graphics card and amount of ram the entire game was MUCH smoother, Id say roughly twice my original framerate. No clue how performance will pan out as beta progresses, but its not great right now.

wriathOD, whats your GPGnet name? I need to get a game going vs an AI, but a player that drops with nothing but a radar tower or some such would work too...Im ilkhan on GPGnet, and online in main chat now

I have to say nice game to Wriath. The testing game was quite fun. Some of the things we found:
submerged vs submerged, a tempest *DOES* take out an atlantis.
surfaced the atlantis goes down even faster.
With even 20 aircraft (mixed broadswords and the T3 bombers) the tempest went down. Hard.
torpedo bombers dont do shit to battleships.
cruisers are a good match to decent sized swarms of torp bombers. 12-15 would be required minimum to drop one.
UEF (at least) bships have no torpedoes
tempest has some nice anti-torpedo charges
atlantis has 4 T3 AA batteries on it. And they work well.
broadswords kick ass.
surfaced, the tempest can take out a battleship AND a submerged atlantis. That oblivian cannon hits *HARD*

I cant think of anything else off the top of my head. Was a good test game until I threw 30 mixed T3 aircraft at his mostly undefended base and accidently detonated his commander...

Random other stuff:

Aeon battleships dont have any AA, but as all battleships have tons of hp theyre probably a bad target for torp bombers. A T3 bomber would be much more effective versus a battleship or any other high hp non-submerged sea unit with little AA. I think its better to interpet "torpedo bomber" as "bomber that can hit submerged units" rather than "bomber thats always great versus sea units".

I think you gave too much credit to the Aeon cruisers, they only have ~3500 hp so they will sink if a strong wind blows. When not exploding violently due to low hp, the Aeon cruiser does a good job since it uses homing missiles for AA.

On another note, the Atlantis seems to be a carrier that can take care of threats itself if need be, but its real weapon is the ton of planes it can carry. If youre wondering what exactly a "ton of planes" is check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5vEGt4-hCI

Since the Atlantis is a UEF unit, the planes include Broadswords. As I joked in the game, I think one of the most effective ways to deal with Broadswords is to let them blow up your commander so his explosion kills them.

Anyway, it was pretty fun testing the units out. Theres a lot of interesting stuff still to be figured out in this game.

he mentioned, we did the submerged fight and watched my atlantis sink. Then sent another tempest vs atlantis surfaced. He didn't realize I meant + aircraft...that was a rude awakening for him. "Afterall, the atlantis *IS* an aircraft carrier. Its not meant to go into combat alone"

Anybody playing on a highend laptop?

Okay, GLSauron just pointed me at this thread from a Mobile Computing thread.

My favorite game of all time is TA, so I am about ready to shit myself after reading this thread.

Things I want to know:

Can I still get in on a beta
Is there a huge community here (like a [H]ard clan)

And WHERE IS THE MONEY SO I CAN GET QUADCORE?
