Supreme Commander: First Impressions

Just played my first ranked game. Got schooled, of course. I think the next few nights of my life may be wasted getting into positive territory :D

I don't know if someone else has already mentioned it, but did anyone else who is familiar with the MechWarrior/BattleTech series look at the map included with the game and notice something familiar? There's a number of planets on there named the same as major planets from BattleTech. The 2 that stick out in my mind right now is Luthien (in BT it's the capital of the Kuritan Empire), Eridani, and Capella (which may or may not be in BattleTech, I can't remember). I just thought it was rather odd.

Luthien is ripped from the Lord of the Rings, so don't feel too bad.

im gonna play some more tonight. i wanted to try out a few each of one the campaigns and before i knew it ..........it was 2am lol. taking a while to complete each mission doesnt bother me as long as im having fun! im playing it on medium setting.

Anyone here care to help me find out how to search for 2v2 ranked matches? All i'm getting into are 1v1's? Help?

On the plus side I've won 2 so far :). Out of 5, eventually I'll run out of uber noobs and be destroyed by semi noobs.

i think that would be the arranged team matches...

Can anyone tell me where on the bonus DVD i can find the 'video tutorials'?

Can't as far as I saw. Go to gametrailers.com and search "supreme commander." All the tutorials are available for streaming in either quicktime or windows media formats.

Cool. But the collecters edition box clearly says "Bonus disk including video tutorials, making of documentary, wallpapers, fansite kit and more." Weird.

capella is definently in BT (free capellan march or somesuch) but dont know any connection beyond that. Im a clanner through and through. Luthien != LOTR. lothlorian is, but not luthien AFAIK

Just finished a 140 minute 4 way free for all on a user made map (island siege IIRC). First combat was at about 50 minutes, and hard pressed from there on. I was the only one using experimentals, one of the AIs never really got off the ground (was second one killed, remarkable enough), but the other 2 were pretty well entrenched. multiple nuke silos (and defenses) each, along with multiple (4 for one) T3 artilleries.

I played aeon. Tempest is really nice for getting close before you get smacked down by artillery. couple tempests to clean the shoreline and I smacked his nuke defenses down. One wouldn't fall, so I teleported a subcom next to it and commited a suicide charge. Expensive, but did the trick. Nuke got through and it was pretty much mop up on him.

The second dude had no nuke defenses, so I pumped a couple missiles down his throat and proceeded to do mopup.

The third one was the pain to break. layered UEF shields, broadswords to prevent battleship(s) from getting close, nuke defenses and *4* launchers. Near constant stream of nukes from him. Got annoying to hear the nuke missile noise when its doubled up. Ended up with marching a subcom up his shoreline, under his shields to kill one of his defenses. Pumped a nuke through that hole, then marched a GC through his base. 4 CZARs (seriously) suicide charged the remaining defenses and let another nuke get through. Couple battleships and a wing of strat bombers did mop up.

Hugely fun map, but I am *seriously* CPU limited playing a 40x40 with 3 AIs and a 750 unit limit. Almost lost the GC because he became unresponsive. A T2 torp launcher was shooting him under the waves during staging and there was like a 30 second delay on any move order. Lost a tempest to that torp launcher for the same reason (the tempest was already damaged, but wouldn't respond to an attack command for like 30 seconds).

Mavor: Because T3 artillery just isn't T4 artillery
Mavor: When T3 artillery just wont reach
Mavor: Because the enemy base is farther than I feel traveling
Mavor: Because strategic missile defense systems work as intended
Mavor: When size does matter
Mavor: Because that resource farm is just so inviting
Mavor: Because gunpowder is cheap
explaination

LOL!

Its powerful but can be beaten. If you cant counter it you deserve to lose. I would suicide 50 bombers at it or a nuke if they have no defense.
I built 3 of these in one of my games. Had like 200 SCUs and my ACU working lol. His base was gone in minutes I was like DAMN. They have some quick firing.

Loving this game so much... I'm still playing against the computer mostly to try and get the hang of the game's nuances, but it's a blast :D! The graphics are freaking pwnage, seriously, as well :).

Luthien (Luthien Tunieval) is the name of the elven princess in the story Aragorn tells (or rather sings) to the Hobbits on their way to Rivendell. The name comes up a couple times in the books because in the story, Luthien eventually wedded Beren, a mortal, after he embarked on a great task to try to win the approval of Luthein's father, and so Aragorn sees parallels between that story and his own.

The Tale of Beren and Luthien is probably the single longest tale in the Silmarillion, a book that is mostly a compilation of mythology by Tolkien, and probably the most interesting (although to most the Silmarillion is quite a chore to get through).

Yea, I know it's kind of sad I know this stuff. I'm a thorough reader and do a lot of it (yay, geek) so I know this kind of thing.

Knowing your roots FTW :)

It's a shame we can't name units in-game. I'd name my Mavor (do you need more than one?!) Beren. (Because he got to *hit that* - pardon the crudeness) :D

Select unit -> <ctrl>+<n> -> enter desired name

And I have always skipped over the songs. Too damn long for backstory.

Does this game really require 8 gigs of space? I'm going to be installing it on my MacBook pro and my windows partition doesn't have nearly that much space avaliable :(
I only partitioned it for 15gigs since all I do on windows is play BF2 and now hopefully Supreme Commander.

It uses that much space just to install. The requirements are far greater, realistically between patches and mods.

I'll be buying the game today if I can make it to the store.

WOO WOO

Said by me when I first learned of SupCom development nearly two years ago:

This game could potentially end my marriage.

this is the first game in years that made me lose track of time.

started work at 6am, finished work at 6pm, came home and said to myself, "ill just play it for an hour or two."

set my alarm clock for 5am, started playing and the next thing i know, BEEP BEEP away goes the alarm.
needless to say i was pissed i would have to do another 12 hours of work before any sleep!

That's only because you are still at work, right? ;)

Worked a 12 yesterday and another today, so yeah, pretty much won't be able to touch it until Monday. I have to work 12s all weekend. :(

Not at the same time, what i want to see is 100 at the same time spread over the entire map

Just finsihed a 2:15 game. it was originally intended as just a screw around game, but I got caught up in it. Myself an a balanced AI vs 2 (seperate) medium AIs. together we crippled the two medium and then I broke the alliance with the hard. The two mediums weren't dead yet, but not on a good path. The mediums were Aeon and Cybran, the hard was UEF and I'm Aeon.

The fight with the hard was a pretty grueling. He had a T3 artillery up after mine, but I wasn't scouting and thus didn't notice. His base was pretty intricate too. Layered shields of parts, strat missile defenses, several fatboys being worked on (and completed several times each), etc. Watch the replay (below) to see the ending. 2 GCs from one of the mediums! Co-ordinating fire from a couple T3 arties is necessary to break through shield. PITA but fun.

Stock map, but you will need the patch to watch it. Just download to anywhere and double click it (or download to your replays dir and can watch through the game). Feedback is appreciated, and Im off to work for now.

Couldn't wait for game to get a little cheaper, found a coupon on a Gamepro magazine that takes $10 off any $40+ pc game and $10 off any console game $30 and up.
So bought Supreme Commander at Best Buy for $40 and Bully for $30.

I viewed the replay for my game from this morning. Grabbed a bunch of screenshots (as well as few from a game on thursday from their names). Most are self explainitory.

The one with the duke? Underneath the barrel is a little speck of light. That spec comes from the bomb bay of a strategic bomber. If you see that light falling against an unshielded T3 artillery, the artillery is dead. The next 3 shots are of its death sequence. Watching is at slow speed fully zoomed is an awesome sight. Those who say supcom graphics suck need to give that a try. Im not even playing on high level graphics.

The nuke sequence shows before/after shots. The before shows a nice little explosion. The ruins are from a 50 siege bot (mixed harbringers and loyalists) that went through a fatboy, the commander, the defenses at his base, and managed to kill 3 of his 4 nuke defenses. The explosion in the shot is that of an Aeon SCU. Started Teleporting next to the remaining nuke defense just as I fired the nuke. The nuke sequence is the next couple shots, followed by the remains of his base following all the explosions. There were a lot of them.

The thursday game are from the game I played against 3 AIs. Each experimental in that shot is a Tempest, the battleships you can tell from the icons, bombers too. The resource farm is from the same game. Heavily shielded, good AA with a little work, not a bad setup if I say so myself.

I love this game, I just installed an played the first campaign mission. It was enticing and I have a 2nd monitor to use too. Oh, I forced myself to stop otherwise Id still be playing for the next couple hours. Im playing on an out-of-date system and everything runs SLOW. I wish the tax return checks would hurry up, I need a new system.

My only gripe is when I try to scroll the screen to the right, my mouse goes straight to the monitor, I haven't figured out how to scroll all around with dual monitors yet.

scroll? like, to the side?
Why would you want to do that?

(dual monitors has a HUGE performance hit, FYI)

Download UltraMon and create a hotkey for the "lock mouse to active window" command. For example, all I need to do is hit Ctrl + Alt + A and it keeps my mouse on my 22", if I hit the three keys again I can move between both screens.

I agree that using the dual monitor option for this game takes a huge performance hit... not worth it for a map.

I like the dual montiors, on one monitor I had an army attacking the front of the base and on the other I had another attacking the side. All I had to do was move the mouse between the two.

And yes I mean scrolling, like you move the mouse to the top of the screen you scroll up, when I move it to the right it goes to the 2nd monitor. I tried Ultramon and didn't like it.

Don't have dual monitor (yet) but I've been playing with split screen.

What's frustrating me right now is the apparent inability to scroll the right-hand screen, no matter what I do. If I'm watching two fronts, I have to zoom out and back in on the right screen to move its focus. It's a bit counterintuitive.

Huge performance hit for dual monitors? Where did you hear that? I'm running dual monitors and I don't see any performance hit. Benchmarking shows a small decrease, but it isn't perceptible to me.

SupCom Perftest run at 1680x1050 High Fidelity on a single monitor:
SupComMark (sim) : 8655
SupComMark (render) : 7562

Machine specs are in my sig below.

Any way to slow down mouse movement, I am using a 24inch sony crt, when I move the mouse side to side to place something it moves too fast.
