Supreme Commander: First Impressions

Well im glad some people are enjoying this game
but allow me to give a counter opinion

I hate this game

Yes my comp does suck (MBP), so the graphics are on low. But even when ive turned them up to close to the max just to see some nice visuals I still think it looks like garbage. It looks like the textures were made in ms paint. Almost every map is a monotone color, the green reminds me of a ping pong table. The only thing that breaks up the horrible ground textures are trees that make lego's look realistic, mountains/valleys are equally dull and are only helped by the fact that all the other "land features" are terrible. What can we say about the water? its blue.
Anyone ever play the cossacks series? that water looks about 100x better and its 8 fricken years old.

all the vehicle models look like garbage, with every unit looking exactly the same (dont give me this "you play zoomed out" bs, if thats the case dont let us zoom in). Each individual animation is duller then the last. the game looks like garbage on medium settings and barely adequate for a 2004 game on high.

Some of the explosions are cool, blowing up a enemy commander and having my experimental saucer crash into the landscape was freaking sweet. But that was 15 seconds out of the 4-5 hours ive played this game.

On top of that the AI might be the worst ive ever seen. It never does anything, it just sits there. Ive heard people discussing the fact that this game is a processor hog and ram hog, which is true.... but the individual unit AI also blows. basically they will follow orders and nothing else, and dont expect any pathfinding miracles.

Now I have a harder time criticizing the gameplay, as quite frankly I probably suck ass at this game. But from what ive played this is how you succeed.
step 1. BUILD LOTS OF POWERPLANTS/EXTRACTORS/FACTORYS
step 2. BUILD LOTS OF UNITS
repeat

now there are some theoretically interesting ideas with the radar/stealth/forcefield units/buildings but I just find the rest of the game so incredibly frustrating and quite frankly dull. Its a bit of a TA throwback, but people that game is 10 years old arent we beyond the whole mass units and attack strategy. Because thats essentially what you do even with the "special" units. people have been constantly talking about the ability to build 800 units and have massive battles, which essentially makes special units a waste, and removes any micromanagment/strategy.

Now im open to the possibility that the game gets better as I understand it more, and im going to give it a few more trys because of all the !!!!!!s who talk about how great this game is. But at this point this game sucks balls.

Whats wrong with SecuRom...

Nothing. I was merely pointing out that this game has SecuRom protection in case anyone else was wondering.

Aside from that, I refuse to purchase or play games that requires a CD and do not allow me to use Alcohol to run from a virtual drive.

So you won't play it because you can't steal it? Nice.

No, I am not buying or playing the game, because the company does not listen to my desires. I am their customer, if they refuse to listen, I refuse to buy or play their game. After the trouble I had with Titan Quest, which did not allow me to play regardless of my original DVD being in the drive, I am no longer interested in having to hunt for no-cd patches that fix a product I pay money for. Given the excellent response that this game has received, this makes me sad, since I am looking for a nice RTS game. I have replied to the future post here in order to stop the derailing of this thread. I merely wanted to advise people that this game uses SecuRom.

Your saying the water pictured here:

is better than the water here:

uuh huh.
As for the lack of strategies you have beyond unit and eco spam, that's all on you, it's as deep as you make it.

While I have to agree that the GFX blow on the lowest setting (Cuz my comp sux), but I played it on my friends comp on the highest setting and it looked amazing. Deffinatly the best GFX in an RTS I've ever played. And I also agree that the AI leaves something to be desired, hopefully we'll see some patches in the near future that address this issue. But still, I haven't had time to play it online yet, But I'm sure it'l be fun, can't wait till the next LAN party :)

ok I just played another hour

For a test I played a smaller map (one of the 1v1) and turned all the graphical options up to max (including). it ran decently, but it was still ugly.

Im not sure what gfx options your friend had turned up that made the game so great looking but Supreme commander on my comp anyway is severely lacking. Even dawn of war was better looking then this game. I stand by my critique of the water, I always remember being impressed with the water in cossacks and I think this water is ugly...if I find my old cossacks CD laying around maybe ill reinstall and do a side by side.

now regarding the gameplay, I tried out a different tactic then mass units and attack. I decided to turtle and build level 3 artillary to shell his base. of course turtling really isnt necessary as the computer will never do anything.

Regardless I had 7 lvl 3 extractors, and a bunch of powerplants (+3k) so I queued up 3 lvl 3 artillerys for my 10 engineers. I had to go pick up my daughter from daycare so i decided to leave the game running.

I came back about 20 minutes later, and one of the artilleries was almost complete... thats right it took 20 minutes to build one piece of artillery. Of course my base was fine, the computer had destroyed about 1/3rd of my forward defensive army. but not really moved at all (I think we can all agree that the AI blows hard, so ill stop harping on it).

the map i was playing on provided another annoyance, it was a hilly one (why isnt any sort of height advantage incorporated into this game? havnt terrain bonuses been standard since starcraft had marines hiding behind trees) which meant that my units spent most of their time SHOOTING INTO THE GROUND/CLIFF. I had stationed a large number of troops on top of a hill, when an enemy approached they would fire on it, that is until the enemy was to close and being blocked by the hill. So my troops decided to aimlessly fire into the ground, this happend even when I individually targeted the enemy. my troops made no effort to actually get into a position in which they could hit the enemy.

tell me a strat I should try, or share with me one of your victory stories so that I can live vicariously through it

another thing

could they possibly make the HUD any bigger? its 1/3rd of the screen. What happend to minimalism.

In case anyone else is wondering: the game uses SecuROM as copy protection ``feature''. I am sad to see that, since I was really looking forward to playing this game.

why are you sad? buy it and play it so what you were expecting a game to come out w/o copy protection ...

Quick question, are you playing on easy, medium, or hard? Also is this the demo or beta, or are you in Europe with the full version? I'm asking because I'm playing the demo, and during skirmish matches the easy and medium computer don't really attack until they've teched up a lot. On hard they keep attacking, I've yet to beat a hard army but can beat easy and medium fairly easy. Also to my understanding the first 2 tech levels don't have the ability to shoot vertically just horizontally.

Also worth mentioning that demo lacks a fiar bit of AI coding compared to the retail version.

Who knows, maybe its just not a game that 'does it' for. Plenty of popular games have been like that for me. No biggy. Plenty of unpopular games have impressed me.

Good call on that, I still have a hard time getting into Company of Heroes, or really any WW2 game. Sorry just couldn't get into them. This one I'm digging on, and I don't really see how everyone is saying this game is so pretty. I love the gameplay, and it's not bad looking but I think Act Of Ware is a better looking game, Rise of Legends was pretty too lol. Still buying this one though on Wed.

lol, dude it's cool you don't like the game. People have different tastes. I personally was REALLY disappointed when I first tried the demo, but after I played through an entire game I thought it was pretty fun and I'm most likely gonna pick up the retail. I won't judge the demo AI so harshly though, I can almost guarantee that the retail will be more difficult and even if it isn't, most people plan to play this online and as far as I hear people are much harder to defeat, especially in this game.

Dude, this is WRONG GENRE for you. If you wan't the most beautifull graphics then first person shooter etc is your choice of genre. These graphics are good for RTS-game of this scale.

Btw, what's up with 10 engineers (and only 7 lvl3 extractros)? 100 is better number - and your buildings complete a lot faster. You should also change the difficulty level to the hard which attacks a lot. ;)

WORD. I was playing the demo on easy and medium and finding it kind of boring because I could win with almost no effort. (This was a good way to learn the units though.) However, after switching to hard I have yet to win a game. The AI is my daddy.

it was a small map, so there werent as many extractors 7 was slightly more then half

ive been playing on hard, and its really pretty crappy and incredibly passive

still ive elevated my grade from sucking balls to just licking balls

and as far as graphics go im not a graphics whore at all, but if its ugly dont have high sys req. and it better have other redeaming qualities

anyway im done complaining about this game, its clearly not for me but I wish you all the best and am glad that a bunch of you have found a fun game to play

Well, there's 3 different hard AI's, and one of them plays turtle until it gets to T3 or something like that.

There are other things in games besides graphics that demand something from system. There's a lot of physics-calculations, AI, path-finding etc going on and those don't have much to do with how the game looks like, except maybe gun-trajectories.

I've played 2 training games and 2 games against hard AI, and all I can say is that hard AI got owned, altough it wasn't passive at all - but I had already a lot of experience from TA so there wasn't that much learning curve for me. Hopefully they will tweak the AI, and of course there will be 3rd party AI's which should kick ass. :)

Yes hard is pretty difficult. Only beat it once. Other times im like 2 minutes late with my experimental units. Extractors arent the only way to get mass. Theres mass fabricators. Ill have 10+ late game which is when they are needed.

Pics of the water and a close up of the terrain. Table does your game look like this or worst? These screens are at 1280x1024 with max settings except no AA.

i run the game @ 1680X1050, everything max, shadows medium fidelity medium and the game looks absolutely amazing.....i have no idea how you cannot just love the water.....it looks absolutely amazing to me. For a rts this is possibly the best gfx i've ever seen, and there are quite a few animations for each unit. considering how many units there are and how much time it takes to create those units its an accomplishment.

Just played demo/skermish on challenge (medium) mode. I crawled up to T3 and arty'd the AI's base ... Until it sent a fucking spyderbot at me. It was over pretty damn quick.

I don't understand how people are saying it has good graphics. The textures are total garbage. The models are VERY low detail. I am not an idiot, I actually develop games, and I know that graphics are not a priority in this genre, but I think for a '07 game they could have put a bit more effort into it. I mean, where was their effort spent? The AI is terrible (both whole army AI and individual unit AI such as path finding and stuff), the models are bland and all very similar, the textures are barely existent, honestly they could have used solid colors for many of the textures without much of a noticeable difference. There are half as many units as TA... this feels like a half complete game to me (once again, I am talking about the full version)

i for one dont care what it looks like cause this is what have been waiting. A new major competitive online rts that I can get into from the start.

Gearing up for a 100 nuke strike. Should be ready sometime tomorrow. I hit the AI base with one already to suppress them and hopefully the won't attack me overnight. I have it saved at this point just in case. The ETA on the last one is 1290 minutes, then I have to build the nukes! Also, notice my +99999 energy generation :D

honestly people, im beginning to think that the last game you played was warcraft 2.

I completly agree with codex this game just feels so incomplete. Which is confirmed by GPG constantly talking about running out of developing time.

the fact that he can leave the game on over night in order to build a hundred nukes is hilarious and sad ...gj

anyway now im done, for real this time

That's a really organized base, CodeX.

My bases are like they are in most strategy games in Supreme Commander--sprawling, with an almost random layout (I only really take care in placing my factories and defenses, otherwise I put things where there is room). On the map in the demo, my base usually fills up my half of the island (I just build storage units, power plants, and Anti-Air turrets everywhere). This usually works very well against AI opponents, and even some people, who are often hell bent on destroying everything, and a big base with the non-critical stuff all over tends to really slow down their progress--however that laser on the Spiderbot can make short work of anything and everything that strays into it's way.

Anyway, my biggest beef so far with the game is the Experimental units.

In long games against the Hard AI, they seem to be necessary, if only for defense. I played a three hour game against the AI (played in about four sessions), over the course of which I destroyed 60 Experimental Units (so average of one every three minutes, although sometimes they came in pairs, it was mostly Spiderbots, and a few of the super-gunship things). Sixty. I tried at first to have some basic defenses, and artillery installations, but also send regular attacks against the AI, but it ended up turning into a classic porc game (porcupine, for those who have never heard the term, the players who just hole up in their base with the defenses).

Without Experimental units of my own, I just wasn't able to hold them back (I used the Commander's D-gun like weapon on a couple, but that was only because they got very close and were trashing my critical facilities). I just would up placing a network of overlapping shields on the AI's attack routes and upgrading them all the way and literally placing several of my own Spiderbots within the shields, since their main weapon seems to be the only thing that can destroy an enemy Spiderbot before it would get into my main. The enemy Spiderbots can eat through the upgraded shield very quickly (probably under a second) but with multiple overlapping ones over my Spiderbots, they could delay the enemy a precious couple seconds, during which time my bots trained their main weapons on the enemy and opened fire. Advanced counstruction units on patrol basically everywhere repaired any damage done by the enemy bots (and reclaiming wreckage for metal that I was in need of), and I built some of the Experimental gunships to sport for my level 3 artillery installations.

I don't like superunits, so when my defenses were finally stable (they were basically maintenance free by the end, with the patrolling construction vehicles handling any repairs necessary) I started building up a rush of classic units. I built 100 Loyalist level 3 siege bots (little monsters in early games) another 50 or so level 2 heavy tanks, some missle launchers, and some anti-air, and a couple random units totally 180 units (I then hit the 500 unit cap). As a precaution I set my factories up to waypoint within the enemy base, and ordered them to build about 50 more units each, so I could instantly replenish loses on the front. I launched my rush after the AI used it's latest Spiderbot, hopping that I wouldn't run into another completed one, but no luck.

Hit an enemy Spiderbot just outside their base, it killed around 50 of my Loyalists right off the bat before it was destroyed. The real problem is that the units got bottlenecked on the "bridges" between the two islands, so most of my tanks weren't yet in the fight. But eventually got into the enemy main, and the Loyalists trashed the place. Needed to launch some tactical missiles against some enemy ships, and one nuclear weapon against their concentration of shipyards and a battleship. Losses for my initial rush were astronomical, only 9 of my original 100 Loyalists survived, the reinforcement stream ended up picking up a lot of the slack.

If I had run into multiple Spiderbots, based on the casualties I suffered against one, my rush would probably have failed. I don't like that, that a single Spiderbot is so powerful, and groups seemingly have to be countered by other Spiderbots. The Krogoth in Total Annihilation was quite a monster, but a good Bulldog rush could take out several on the way through an enemy main, mostly because the Krogoth's best weapon was the Annihilator like cannon mounted in the head, which, while strong, didn't one hit kill heavy armour a lot of the time, and could not fire constantly. The Spiderbots have that immensely powerful cannon that can open up and sweep over multiple targets, and destroy strong units very quickly.

Just think they seem too strong, not so much armour wise as much as that main cannon.

But, just what I think.

each unit has extreme weaknesses, just play around on what to attack each unit with. Long games= your trying to build TOO many of a very advanced unit, i would hope it takes 1290 min for someone to build a nuke for christs sake! ITS A NUKE, if the game allowed 100 nukes built in 5 min, that would not be a very fun game.

as for the graphics, i dont have a problem with them, its better than what i would expect for a game that lets me zoom all the way out to see the entire map. it doesnt run well on most computers, and thats one of the main reasons it doesnt run well. I run the game in max everything 1920x1080 and enjoy it very much.

i bet rather quickly your frames go down to 10-15fps at that res etc with your hardware.

I hate this game

i'll give you $25 for the game... :D

unfortunately yes, ill sometimes bump it down so i can get decent frames, on almsot everything low i'll get around 30, then it'll just drop when i get into battles lol. I dont mind it really, as long as the game is fun i can deal with that.

You say your game looks like that huh? Dont bash on the game because your pc cant turn up the graphics. Seriously you need to have fidelity, level of detail, and textures set to something other than the lowest before u guys comment on the graphics.
Also, if you want to compare it to other games of the same genre zoom in until you can only see a handful of tanks in a tiny area and then compare it cause you know damn well in those other games thats all you have in your field of view.

Where did you here GPG was running out of dev time? They had as long as they wanted to put this game out, they couldve delayed it again had they felt the need.

Rofl

first of all that wasnt even the pic I was refering to (it was some other poster that had asked)

but I guess you have me in a "your computer is bad" box ... nevermind the fact that in a small pic like that and at that distance the game is going to look exactly the same no matter what graphics options you have turned up.

Someone posted some article where the GPG guy talked about how they could have added different things but they just ran out of time.

oh well im not going to convince you two to play this game, I just wonder why you keep coming back to crap in this thread. Supcom has its share of good points and bad points, just like any other game. Some people enjoy it and thats great, other people dont and thats fine to.

The game could be good IF it did not take a year to build the cool tech 3/experimental stuff. On online play unless you have call a truce for 45 minutes one or the other of you will have out-spammed and won the game before the cool stuff gets out.

I am able to pump out tech 3 and experimentals most of the time if the game exceeds 30-45mins.

Im sure you know this already, but just in case.... if you assign a whole ass-load of engineers to assist the build, it builds MUCH faster.

Shadows and fidelity are turned to high in my screenshot, and it is running on a 7950gt, jpg compression hurt it a little, but otherwise that is what it looks like at full detail.
