Students, as part of a documentary-making course at Carleton College in Minnesota, have decided not to use a computer for 5 weeks. Impressive. If this documentary was following me during 5 weeks without a PC it’d be called “Curled Up In A Ball Crying.” Could you go 5 weeks without your computer?

Capturing the experience of going without a computer — for Magnusson it was five weeks — is part of a documentary-making course at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. She and two other students who went on the "computer fast" are the documentary subjects; eight others took turns filming.

not a problem. i would go back to doing most of the things i did before i had one. i'm positive it would help me more than hurt.:D

I would definitely not be a happy camper, especially since I've had to deal with a situation like this before, but for much longer.

I can tell you I would end up reading a lot of the books I have on my list to read which I haven't gotten around to yet.

I think my biggest problem with this as a student would be not being able to use a word processor to type up any papers I had. I'm not even sure where you can find a typewriter around here anymore. It definitely wouldn't be the first time I had to type a paper up on a typewriter (I existed long before computers in the home were the norm) but it would definitely not be fun.

I went 3 months without MY computer  "I was kinda homeless at the time". So it was a bit rough... but i was able to use my parents, and my parents-in-law's machines heheheh

No gaming for 3 months hurts, no keeping up with the [H]ard, hurts, no keeping up with Tech hurts.

Being without a computer hurts... hehehe

MUST HAVE MY COMPUTER FIX :D

I forgot my laptop one day last week and I almost cried! (not really)

I could go without my desktop or gaming lappy though, those are just a hobby.

Kinda ironic though, I was looking at carlton until I realized how expensive it is, and how its all cake-eaters that go there.

Wish there was a edit button

I also could not sleep very well without my Hum of the fans...

I second both those. Reminds me, I need new fans. Mine have blue LED's in em :\

hmm must be marketing or business majors, In 1984 you could not survive without a top of the line TI or HP pocket calculator in EE. The guys who could afford the top of the line model that would read in a magnetic strip the user could pre-program with formulas had a distinct advantage.

The question I would be interested in would be, has course work changed in such a way as it is impossible to compete (because your GPA is your score guys, and coming in first counts) without a computer?

Probally yes.

I

Not a chance in Hades. My private business depends on computers, so no, I could not go five weeks without one.

I can't live without the internet let alone a computer. When I first moved into my dorm in September I didn't have a login for the University Net and I was without it for 4 or 5 days because they couldn't register me for some reason. That was the most boring week of my life.

Can't do it...TBH, thinking about it...12 hours a day at a PC at work doing software, and then most of my time at home sans sleep on PC (or consoles...which I would count as PC-related) gaming/doing stuff... 17 hours a day on PC? I think last time I started to hate lack of PC after around 4 days or so. :(

i actually had to do just that for a job about 5 or 6 years ago. worked at a resort and lived in a craphole. no room for extras like a computer and we didnt even have a phone line anyays so u know interweb is out. wasn't as hard as i thought, but i was happy to get my compy back. i may have replaced it with copious amounts of alcohol at the time however.

i try on occassion to go as many days as possible without a computer. I find myself a bit happier afterwards, but going back to using them, im completely flustered. I get my read list done, my hobbies, my movies, etc. But as soon as i get back behind the screen, its like i'm a freshman in college again. lord i hate that feeling

I had to go without a PC for about a month and a half about a year ago when I was waiting for the A8N32-SLI boards to become available for my upgrade. I got by OK. Now that I'm a WoW addict, I'd probly go nuts. However my wife would be thrilled! :)

When I'm not in school, I'm just fine without a computer. However being a Business Information Systems major, I'd fail the majority of my classes if I didn't have a computer for 5 weeks. The one class that I wouldn't fail, is a math class, and the *only* class that I actually take pen and paper to!

No can do. I'm an IT Manager. I make big bucks working with and on computers ;-)

However, when it comes to school, I'm class of '91 so computers weren't widely available in schools at the time. We had an Apple IIe and a Commodore 64 in the library in high school though, but it wasn't commonly used to do school work lol

I think I turned out just fine.

A week without the Internet almost killed me. I ended up hooking up my cell phone to my PC to check my email. I read three or fours books, played guitar until my finger just about fell off, beat a few console games that I never got around to, and then was bored as hell.

Computers are such a huge part of my life anymore... I wake up with my laptop next to me, sit at my desktop as I drink my cup of coffee, waste the day away on one at work... I do all my non food shopping on my PC, hell, I even order pizza online most of the time...

I think I'm hooked.

lol...i bet most people on here could relate to that, i know i do :D

One time, back when I used to run my rig 24/7, I turned off my computer because I was going to be away for the weekend. I felt like something special to me was lost.

now, if I go longer than 5 hours without my computer, I go nuts.

I could do it pretty easy...however, things would take longer. Is that a bad thing...I don't know.

I use a computer as a tool...not as a crutch. Guess I'm different that way.

Well I work in IT so that would be really rough. Hell my home computer was down for a few days waiting on parts and I had to bring home my work laptop to make sure I didn't lose my sanity!

how the hell are they suppose to do any of thier work for college...

3 of my classes last semester had homework that had to be downloaded, was online, or had to be submitted online. let alone writing papers... are they going to use a typewriter?

QFT, essays must be typed. Quiz's are online, notes are online, class collaboration online, etc etc. I'd fail class.

not using a computer may or may not enrich your life.. some people might just play their console or be a couch potato flicking from one retarded sitcom to another.. or you could read a book, go out with friends or visit family, work on some other type of hobby/project, learn to play an instrument like guitar or piano, take martial arts classes.. hey these are all things i think about doing while I'm ripping people a new asshole in TF2 :p

COMPUTER = WIN ;)

I had to go 4 days without my stuff when the power was out, and I was about ready to strangle every person around.

5 weeks? No thanks.

I did it for 2 months, but finally decided that I wasn't a recluse because I sit on my PC all day. I just have poor social skills.

I actually get physical symptoms if i'm away from the computer for more than a day, my hands starts swelling and I'm weird. This is why I can't go without a computer, I am connected 24/7 via PDA & Laptop, redundant internet connections (just incase), a spare computer, generator, and I'm looking at a home generator now for those extended periods.

Yeah, I am addicted.

Seeing as how i pay most my bills online, and my email is basically my mailbox, nope. I'd be pretty screwed.

That really is taking it too far. :p

I wouldn't say that...

Having a backup gen is nothing short of SMART!.. gotta take care of all your electical needs when the power goes out...

I can say this.. a Backup gen has saved my sanity a few times :D

But those 3 months of being homeless SUCKED ASS.... Thanks to my Family.. i was able to get on there machines to do what i needed to do... GET MY COMPUTER FIX heheheh

Yes i love the tech world.. i hate being disconnected.. but i do leave for a weekend here and there to go camping.. But i do bring a Projector a white bed sheet and my laptop...

We did that for my friends bachlor party.. played Smash bros and watched movies all night long while drinking in the middle of my friends land.. thank god for 1500VA UPS's and 5000VA Generators :D

When I started college (in 1986) my dad decided to keep my c-64 for himself to work on his resume and second career job hunt, having just retired from the military.

I had gone three years in highschool having a computer to compose papers on, and a "near lettter quality" printer to print on. Paperclip FTW.

Then, cold turkey and a fucking typewriter. Or the mini computer in the lab at school with EMACS. Ok for coding, not so much so for papers. Arg. A whole year like that and I lived off campus so it was a PITA to get to the lab.

Bright side? Amiga for the replacement.

Five weeks? Easy.

i did it for awhile. i had to use the public library for internet. it is NOT FUN AT ALL.

Sure, I can live 5 weeks without my computer, well, I won't be alive, but 5 weeks will have passed when I'm dead. ;)

I am 18 years old, and as my family have always been into computer i started using computers when i was at the age of 2. I wouldnt call myself a normal computer user, (prob like most people here who frequently visit this website) and spend allot of my time gaming, browing and using computers as a source of information for college work and general use.

As i have always relied on computers in my life in the form of information and entertainment, i heavily rely on computers to 'satisfy' my daily needs.

I could easily go years without television, but computers and especially the internet, not a chance. I struggle on a mere 2week holiday :(
