Steam UI responsiveness

I've long noticed this about Steam.

It's interesting to note that the Steam website runs better in a proper web browser like Chrome.

I thought this would talk about Steam not responding (which is quite common on some setups). What you've shown here is kind of crazy....

First world problems.

It can get considerably worse (the trade UI comes to mind where the window pops up and you get to stare at a blank screen for 10 seconds before it finally decides to load) at times. There's a noticable delay just swapping from Store to News, Library, etc... it takes a few seconds for it to actually start the page rendering again.

Along with the weird loading times, scrolling on the Steam website in Chrome (and even IE) stays locked at 120 fps, doing the same in Steam drops to 30 and lower... it's noticeably not as smooth.

Steams UI has been garbage ever since they changed it. It's still full of little annoying problems that keep happening like closing it then it randomly will pop backup. Changing tabs that involve loading a webpage take multiple clicks to get it too respond. It will randomly delete your game shortcuts for no reason. I would give anything to have the old UI back.

The odd part is that the UI is using Webkit (Safari & Chrome). It should be snappy but its most definitely not. I see a 1 to 3 second delay, which has occurred since the UI overhaul.

Occasionally links from different sections (like clicking the acheivements bit in the library) will just not open, or it will just act as if you've clicked nothing. Same for some store page links, it will occasionally just do nothing or open the main store. Have also had it where occasionally shift+tab will stop opening the overlay (was using web browser in-game). Then the weird issues like where the whole thing pauses when a download finishes. The ingame browser is pretty useless right now too, typing an address and pressing enter will usually do nothing and youll have to do it several times to get it to go to the webpage.

Nothing really major, but it does seem to be more and more buggy and something they should look to fixing before adding more stuff.

Yeah I've gotten this, the whole page renderering gets stuck too, even the scroll bar stops working. It's usually slower to try and open the ingame browser than to just alt-tab and go to Chrome... which at that point completely defeats the purpose. The trading UI does the same shit so it takes forever to actually come up in game.

Not the end of the world, but irritating nevertheless

Origin looks nicer and is better organized. Also Steam doesn't even remember basic window positioning or small mode.

The interface response has been like that ever since I can remember. I don't like it either. Gives it a bloated feel.

umm....yes it does. For me anyways. And no, Origin is definately not better organized. In fact, the origin interface is horribly unorganized. It does't even have an option for smaller icons.

How's the Kool Aid taste?

I am not having any of the aforementioned issues with skype. I even watched your youtube video where you brag about your 120hz monitor and I saw no difference.

Agreed. It's harder to navigate and sloppy looking. Gabe Newell was right about them being a long way off before getting it right. Personally I don't think they ever will because it not about what the customer wants.

It's ok if Steam is sluggish and freezes up for a few seconds all the time because it's made by Valve.
That's odd because I've never noticed it freezing up all the time. The only time I've ever had problems with it is during holiday/seasonal sales and that's due to their servers getting pounded.

I have also notice how steam has become more unresponsive and uses A lot of RAM. I'm frankly getting tired of all these DRM/Services. Steam, Origin, GFWL, etc.. GoG please.

Try the latest steam beta, I can't replicate the lag when scrolling issue.

Ya the Steam UI has always been a little pokey for me. It works ok over all though so whatever. Generally if it is having any real fits a quick restart (make sure to check task manager to see if it really died, and kill it if not) does the trick.

Contrarian hipster over here. Look at me, I dislike something that's popular!

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it is perfect. I've never got the concept of "This is popular, therefore criticisms against it are invalid."

Steam has always had UI/performance issues for me. Not enough to make me angry, just enough to be an annoyance.

The Steam UI is pretty clunky sometimes, but I'll still take it over Origin's. Video playback can also be pretty jerky. I noticed it got a lot worse for me about the time I installed my 7970 in January. I thought it might have been a problem with ATI drivers and have just dealt with it ever since.

Because some people don't like having their opinions contested, but when they lack any kind of information or formed arguments they respond with straw men and ad hominem "hipster" accusations.

Funnily enough the post he referred to was satirising the kind of mentality he exhibited in response. Pretty cool vindication for Master_of_Sparks, what with darksonic proving his point.

I've also noticed the issues with Steam's UI but I use it so infrequently I don't really mind it too much.

It's not that people don't have any issues with steam, just that this whole thread was started on a ridiculous complaint...and that skews the discussion.

I don't see how this is ridiculous complaint. The OP was able to demonstrate and highlight the issue clearly. Now it might not be a huge priority, but all all bugs should be noted so improvements can be made in the future.

You mean by trying to scroll so fast you can't read anything anyway in that video? How the hech is that a bug...

I only used Origin once and it worked OK but no where near the polish as Steam, yet all I here is Steam bashing...wow.

There are definitely UI flaws in Steam, slow scrolling is barely the radar, if at all, I honestly thought this was a joke thread being satirical of people defending Origin.

Are you reading the same thread? OK, a couple like myself are calling shens...

Sorry, I thought you meant in general rather than just this thread, the forum as a whole is filled with Origin hate, this is one of the few focussed on Steam rather than Origin, lol.

It's been a problem ever since the new UI, even while it was still in beta.

I (or maybe someone else, can't remember TBH) created a thread on the Steam forums about this very issue when the new UI was still in beta. It had a ton of responses confirming the problem, but nothing was ever said or fixed. Basically, the Steam Hammer Legion Members :p just responded by saying it was a non-issue or they don't even notice it. Then when you could finally convince them the issue was real by having them compare performance between Steam and an actual web browser, it would of course become a non-issue anyway, because after all it's not really meant to be a browser in the first place.

Kinda reminds me of the Apple mentality really.

Holy...

#FirstWorldProblems

I don't notice it and it's probably because of my monitors.

Thread's kinda more like...

WHY IS [H] USING MULTIPLE <script> tags that block page render!!! And seriously?!?!?! @import??!?!?!

Yeah. That kind of rant.

Steam has plenty of issues. It forgets shortcuts that I've added. It forgets my categories on occasion. I have to sometimes click on sections multiple times for the a page to load.

But guess what? Despite all these issues, it's still the best digital distribution platform available. For people to come out and compare Steam to Origin and say "Well the UI is a little clunky" is hilarious. You're comparing a program that is meant to service millions of people to perhaps a few thousand.

There's no vindication here. Any time someone brings up a negative aspect of Steam, there's always somebody that will cry out, "WATCH OUT FOR FANBOYS LOLOLOL" and it's pathetic. We're not fan boys of anything - we're a fan of a superior platform.

Steam is no where near perfect, however it is the most solid platform out there right now. People far too often have this hipster mentality of hating what is considered popular and constantly find little quirks to complain about. This thread is just that.

Spoken like a true fanboy.

I use steam, gfwl, origin because they are forced on me. I barely have issues with any of them. I'd rather there was no service required for any games.

I didn't see any delay or 'lag'. I saw a low update rate. Probably because they want to keep the CPU load next to nil because some years ago someone griped about 0.5% CPU it was pulling while gaming on a p4.
