Hur-fucking-rah for posting a message on their forums which I never go to anyways. I could ALMOST excuse it if this was a big fucking banner on their main page... yanno the one where people go to click on games and give them money.

Shit like this is glad my Socialist Republic of California requires notification if your information gets yanked.... A FUCKING EMAIL IS ALL I ASK FOR, if I didn't read the news at this site, would I have known? Oh wait yeah if I actually go to read their message forums then I'd be notified...

This. Friggin ridiculous, and they additionally waited just about as long as Sony yet the VALVE DEFENSE FORCE(tm) is out blathering bullshit about how well Valve handled it in comparison .

Steam was never a saint. Valve used the supposed hack of HL2 in pre-beta as the excuse to force people to register with Steam to play the game they'd already paid for. It's become standard since then but it pissed me off no end then and still strikes me as invasive and unjustified.

My policy on all these sites is to lie. In my real life I am pathologically honest but when it comes to websites collecting demographics I try to make sure that no two of them have the same info about me and certainly none of them have my real info. They don't need it, they don't deserve it and they should stay the hell out of our business. That way - amongst many reasons - if the site gets hacked the hackers just have some BS too. GFL skiddies.

Important side note: you can get credit cards for your accounts with any damn name you want. Tigol Bitties? Sure. Let some skiddie from China or Romania - or heck, Pasadena - try to cross check that against your birthday.

Don't worry, revisionist history INCOMING!

P.S. You are entirely correct... for some reason idio---I mean, people don't seem to care at all about putting everything about themselves online publicly and to every company that asks, it's unbelievable and pathetic.

I know i'm probably just going to get classified as the "Valve Defense Force" here, but it took them less than 4 days to admit that account information may have been taken, and they admitted the forum hack immediately. It took Sony more than a week. I don't consider twice as long to be "about as long".

Still, 4 days is still too long. I would like to see all companies that deal in personal information take the Last Pass approach. They notified everyone immediately when their system detected an abnormal amount of traffic on a server (not even a breach, just a suspicion), shut down the system to protect everyone, provided work-arounds for the service being down, and kept everyone updated via a blog with updates every 2 - 3 hours.

Sorry, you're not quite enough to qualify for a VDF membership :p . While 4 vs. 7 days is different, my main point is that I too (as you said) feel 4 days is way too long.

At least Valve has the option to not store your CC# but it is opt out instead of opt in and it should be the other way around IMO. Some sites store your CC# in your account info with no way to remove it.
