In case you haven't seen this yet... Steam "offered" a video driver update. I figured I hadn't done one in a while, so I'd just let steam do it. I mean, how hard can it be to upload me an executable and do an install script... Comes up like a regular AMD driver install, BUT....

BSOD

Fortunately, Windows 7 booted and I can sort of get my way to AMD to download a new driver. Screw you Steam...if I wanted to waste 15 minutes of my time, I would have done something else.

I don't know...I've been running it for 6 months and haven't had more than 1 BSOD. Who knows? The AMD driver install I had to do after that worked fine, so no harm, no foul I guess.
 
I hit a BSOD after last nights windows update. did not recur. actually had a BSOD after the previous big update with service pack.
 
i used the steam driver update utility a couple of times back when i had my 5770, worked fine and was nice and convenient. i suppose it doesn't matter one way or the other since installing new drivers is relatively painless these days.
 
I never use any third party to install drivers. Not windows update and not steam. Too much potential for headaches, no thanks. Uninstall,safe mode driver cleaner, Ccleaner(reg clean) clean install and reboot. Avoids as many potential issues as possible.
 
The update worked for me the very first time it was available, then never again. I haven't even bothered in a while, but I have to admit I didn't really get the integration with steam in the first place.
 
The integration with steam is for the more casual weekend gamers that are a big part of valves sales. It makes sense to an extent but for us here and on other hardware forums it's not needed. Most people here are aware when a new driver is released from Nvidia/Amd and if or when we need it.
 
How do you know when there is a update on the drivers? Usually i just let steam take card of it? Should i go back to doing it the normall way?

That's up to you but as for myself I don't allow any auto updating of drivers. If it's working out for ya then sure stay that way.
 
I used to use drive sweeper to wipe all the files then went to amds website and downloaded them. Do you think thats better?

I had a BSOD after updating XP (after sp.3) and the damn thing wouldn't boot again...fubared my whole install. Had to reinstall and load all my games and stuff again. Needless to say, I update no more. I have determined MS updates are nothing but junk.

i've used both AMD's and Nvidia's recommended methods for a long time (neither instruct to use a driver sweeper program), and i've yet to have any issues. buy like Savoy said, stick with what has been working for you.

The safest understood norm when updating drivers has always been. Uninstall, reboot into safe mode run driver sweeper, reboot, fresh install of your drivers, I also run ccleaner to clean the registry since driver sweeper always misses some, then reboot and your good to go.

Good point Porter but bear in mind nvidia has changed their tune a few times over the years so I play it safe. :)

With that mentality, I am sorry for anybody who has to try to clean virii and malware off of your system.

There is a reason for updates. Security, performance, and bug fixes.
 
I think it is the AMD driver itself causing the BSOD. When I did it the 'old fashioned' way the 11.3's made my machine BSOD every time at install. The fix was I had to remove any trace of AMD's crappy drivers, reinstall my chip-set drivers (which were current to begin with), then I was finally able to install the new AMD drivers.

The "current" ones on AMD's website are the 11.3's (I just downloaded them after my BSOD earlier...maybe there was a widespread problem with the 11.4's.

My mistake, I am on the 11.3's.
 
I didn't have an issue installing the 11.3's from the website...only through steam. Granted I only tried the once and maybe it was just a fluke.

Are you using the latest Geforce driver beta, where the driver has an update tool?

No I'm not running those betas on my main rig but I am aware of the update tool built into the latest betas. I won't be using that more than likely. I have the latest verde betas running on my laptop and they have that built in updater and I won't be using it there.

I got away from running betas on my main rig since having tri sli and all that just opens the door for potential unwanted headaches. I only use Whql's and even though that doesn't guarantee a headache free experience it definetly limits it in my experience. I have found over the last couple of years that nvidia beta's are more "beta" than they used to be. They have just about added the kitchen sink in their drivers and it has opened up alot of potential issues with compatibility and what not. Just so much going on with the drivers now that i decided a while back just to stick with offical's for the forseeable future on my machine that I really care about.
