Starfield

IMO I prefer this to NMS. I really don’t care that space is just loading screens TBH. This isn’t trying to be Elite, and when you think about even how Elite or NMS work they technically have loading screens between areas when you transition anyways. It’s not full seamless like star citizen. However, SC is a pipe dream for that reason. The technology just doesn’t exist to build a massive game in time. This game has it where it counts and it’s a solid experience.

I recommend against this. Part of the fun is figuring out things for yourself, you fail and you get up. What's the fun in already knowing the easiest way to beat the game?
I wouldn't be using this video as a guide per se, but more of experience and wisdom being passed down to me from an old timer.

The only two things that I would call "required learning", are the insights into transporting contraband by purchasing shielded compartments for your ship, and doing the first few missions to gain your "super powers".

Bethesda. Take it or leave it. ;)

Good. Some typical jank. Not a "2023 Cyberpunk bleeding edge" title. Somehow despite a number of caveats, quibbles, and legit criticisms (and not) most of us are seeing a whole bunch of hours magically disappear and want to keep playing. This is the basement. It's only going to get better as time goes on thanks to patches and mods.

Gunplay is solid but not Destiny, Call of Duty, etc. caliber. Good story. Lots to do and explore.

Lots of No Man's Sky rip off for the spaceship and planet exploration aspects. I still am amazed there are no legal issues for this. NMS does these better.

For a Bethesda title this early on it's in good shape in terms of bugs. This is probably the best we have ever seen from them so far as that goes.
agreed on all your points. the degree to which it rips off NMS is crazy. that being said, NMS never really grabbed me, but Starfield does.

edit: also, this is the first bethesda game since morrowind for me that i feel more comfortable playing it with kb/m. the on foot combat is more enjoyable that way in this game, and thankfully the mouse control method for flying your ship works really well

Right where I'm at.

I'm willing to admit that it is possibly because the HDR features on my screen aren't that amazing. It's an Assus XG438q, a 43" 4k VA panel with DisplayHDR 600...

But it was a screen that got top reviews when I only just bough it a little while ago.... uuhh. I guess that was 4 years ago, but still! In the grand scheme of things, what is 4 years?

Anyway, I don't use Windows 11, so I don't have any of the AutoHDR features. For some games that natively support HDR I use the feature. Cyberpunk 2077 was one of these, but - at least in Windows 10 - it requires that I turn on HDR for the desktop (otherwise the HDR settings don't show up in game, and it doesn't use HDR), which makes white windows (like the file manager and other things) blast so bright that they sear my eyeballs. In general it makes the desktop experience mostly unusable, or at the very least very uncomfortable, so I wind up turning it on, starting the game and turning it off again, which gets old, and I often forget to enable it before starting the game, and don't even notice until I've been playing for a half an hour, and don't feel like quitting to enable it.

I guess to me HDR is more of a marginal feature than a game changing one, and on or off it doesn't make a huge difference in game to me, but it does completely ruin my 2D/Desktop experience, and for this reason I almost always keep it off.

And yes, this may be in part because I have refused to "upgrade" to Windows 11, and in part because my monitor is 4 years old, but still.

Monitors used to be the one part of our hobby that would last nearly indefinitely. I can't bring myself to replace it just for HDR, a feature my screen purportedly already has...

At some point I may invest in a 42" LG C<insert number here> but it hasn't been a priority yet, in part because the possibility of burn-in concerns me. I still use this computer for work more than I do for games or movies. We are probably talking 50 hours a week for work work (MS Office, Stats software, email, etc.) with static windows menus and window decorations all day every day. Then maybe another 20-30 hours a week of home productivity and web browsing. I maybe squeeze in 4 hours of games per week.

So for this reason, the screen I pick HAS TO be compatible with productivity style static windows without side effects. Everything else is secondary. I'm not going to get a dedicated screen just for games, when I only have time to spend a few hours per week on games.

I havent read up enough to know the difference between FALD and other forms of local dimming, but I know my monitor has local dimming and I usually turn it off. The screen segments are way too large, and it usually just winds up looking worse.

I'm with you on the "too bright for my eyes" part in many cases. Usually not in games, but definitely on the desktop, which is where I spend most of my time.
I don't have windows 11 either, thinking about making the jump because of my monitor setup. FALD isn't really great until you get over 500 dimming zones from what I understand. I use my computer for work as well so I can't switch to OLED but I've found high zone count dimming to be solid (this one around 1200 I believe). People bitch about how the algorithm makes it dark in certain scenarios, but overall it's to keep blooming down, and it does still get extremely bright at times and highlights look amazing. I'm also with you that I won't change my monitor out for a very, very long time. It's the one thing I hate replacing the most because 1. They're hard to sell and ship. 2. They last forever and it feels super wasteful to get rid of them (hell I just replaced a 2010 panasonic plasma tv in my bedroom because it finally died). If it works good enough for my use case, why change it?

Having said that, real HDR is impactful, but honestly, most of the implementations for games I've seen on windows have been sub par. Diablo 4 doesn't work for me at all, and I don't expect it to get fixed. When it does work, it is one of the best visual upgrades you can get, maybe even more so than most graphics card upgrades with lower settings. The one thing that bums me out is Samsung not supporting Dolby Vision so watching Netflix with HDR on here is very hit or miss, sometimes it works well, other times it doesn't.

The video is 360p so I can't see your CPU Load out of conversation but you seem not to know how games work.
The game and all of its systems are still running during dialogue, they aren't unloaded or frozen. So saying nothing is going on is plain wrong.

IDK why are people so eager to attack this game and it's optimization when it is actually pretty well optimized for what it is.
4K quality finished a while back. The high CPU usage in dialogue is seemingly only during those dialogue bits, before and after the dialogue exchange things get back to normal, whilst still being high, but not as high - So the CPU use is higher during those dialogues for unknown reasons as there isn't anything else meant to be going on anyway during them. This points to some form of poor optimisation.

I followed this guide, since I didn't know you had to link your Steam account to AMD Rewards: https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/15mzq89/note_for_the_amd_gpucpu_buyers_your_copy_of/

Does anyone know how long this process takes?

I just picked up the game the regular edition since I usually don't play during my work days.
84 gig download isn't bad for a compressed file.

Definitely do not need to loot everything.... but I just can't resist the urge.

Any vendors with more than 5k credits?

Yes, but you'll have to go to other nearby planets and there are a few wandering traders as well.

Hint: if you see a ship landing in the middle of nowhere, go to it. 1/3 of the time, in my experience, has been a trader.

I haven't even fired my gun in the last 10 hours of gameplay. So many NPCs to talk to.

Or try the experimental 120fps version here

The amount of basic shit that is broken in this game is staggering.

Once again shadows are the biggest offender (next to "God Rays") when it comes to performance in the Creation engine.
But this time there is no "shadow distance" toggle.

I messed around with this suggestion and so far I can't say I'm seeing any appreciable differences/improvements. (In and out of HDR)

I'm definitely going after that fog removal mod. Bethesda has that damned fog in all of their games to cover up a multitude of sins.

P.S. I'm considering using a ***controller*** for the spaceship flying parts. ;) *runs away*
Disappointing. Guess I'll wait until hopefully the first patch fixes/adds display settings that should be standard...

Blind exploration, ie: "Pick a direction and walk in it", is a real flop here. It's all just empty landscapes with some generic enemy bases and radiant quests. There doesn't seem to be much to discover by just exploring.
Either a named quest sends you somewhere, or just don't bother.

The proc gen stuff was a bad idea.

It's the weakest point of the gameplay loop for sure. Pretty much the 100% copy paste of NMS in this regard was a bad idea. I'm hoping future expansions do something to improve on the planet exploration stuff. I do like the aspect of the planets having different resources and the outpost/resource meta game though.

What’s the overall consensus?
I don't know the consensus I can only give you my own opinion.

I'm enjoying it. I already put 10 hours in it in one day. It undeniably mimics Mass Effect, but that's OK, I don't want originality for the sake of it. The missions and level design seems to be entirely inspired by OG Mass Effect. Even the exploration, you can land on almost any planet and there are a few points of interest, like raider/pirate outposts or natural formations you must scan, IDK to what end yet. You can also build outposts similar to Fallout 4. As far as I can tell they can be used to produce resources to sell or for use. But even after 10 hours I feel I have only started to scrape the surface.

The space combat follows the X-Wing / Tie Fighter recipe, adjust power distribution between weapons engines and other systems. But there is also a stealth aspect to it. If you power down everything except for engines you become harder to detect and can sneak around enemies to reach objectives without alerting them. You can also customize and buy spaceships, even build completely custom ones, and not for real money unlike star citizen.

The first person shooter part is very similar to Fallout 4, but slightly worse. I found it almost impossible to properly hit enemies from a distance. When shooting from the hip the spread is too much to do anything but waste ammo, which is in short supply. But if you aim down the sights, then the weapon occupies 3/4 of the screen and you can't even see where you are shooting at. It's really difficult to hit enemies when you can't see them from your own gun. I only see two viable strategies, blast them from up close, or use a scoped weapon, everything else is a waste of time.

If you can land headshots basic enemies seem to die from 3-4 hits, which is already a bit bullet spongy to me, one headshot should be an instakill. But if you don't hit them in the head, then they truly become bullet sponges, especially the ones with regenerative shields. If you can't finish them off instantly before they regen it almost feels like you have to start from zero again. And this is exacerbated by the fact that reloading is painfully slow in the game. It takes like 10 seconds with most weapons.

One thing I'm really not a fan of is if you put a skill point into a certain ability you have to complete a challenge before you get the benefits of it. For example if you put a point into guns you have to kill 20 enemies with guns to actually gain that skill, or even allow you to put more points into guns. This is really bad design, because it forces you to kill all enemies with guns even ones that are much easier defeated with different weapons. Not to mention that if you have a follower then their kills doesn't count, so it almost becomes a fight against them, to not allow them to snatch kills from you.

Stealth is totally useless, I've tried sneaking but enemies see you from afar if they have vantage points, and going even in the vicinity of one will alert them. IDK how do you even do the 10 stealth kills required to upgrade your stealth skill, when I can't even be in one room with an enemy without them detecting me.

The inventory and menu system seemed very weird at first, but it actually works well. After I got used to it I started liking the simplicity of it.

However the biggest negative of the game is the useless map, it doesn't show anything just vague icons for generic areas not even specific locations. It is total garbage and can't be used for anything. You have to find your own way, which helps immersion as instead of just running past scenery, you actually need to learn the layout of the settlements and where is what in relation to each other, because the map won't help at all. It actually does more to confuse you than to offer anything of value. IDK how did they think this was OK? We might as well not have a local map.

I expect my initial enthusiasm to wane with time but so far I highly recommend the game.

I believe him that there were no contractual oblications or any money specifically about DLSS.

The reason it sounds weasily is because it's kind of assumed you're not going to do that.
aka "unwritten rule", "don't bite the hand that feeds you", "common sense", etc. etc. etc.

What do you think the point of an AMD sponsored game is? AMD isn't doing this for charity, they're doing it to sell cards.
Unless AMD straight up told Bethesda to put DLSS in Starfield they weren't going to do it.

You don't get paid by AMD so they can put "AMD is Starfield's Exclusive PC Partner" on their website, then put DLSS3 in and NVIDIA cards get double the framerate with higher image quality.
That would make you an asshole, idiot, etc.
Yep. Exactly. I was just putting it in gamer layman's terms since others didn't seem to understand :p.

Also the planet boundary size is a total non-issue.
While on-foot anywhere on a planet, you can open your map, select a new landing zone, and instantly teleport to it. Takes 5 seconds.

Also if you hit the boundary wall while exploring, you've done something wrong lol.

Man, leakers are fucking idiots. Give me a leaked copy of the game and I could have solved that nonsense in 5 minutes jfc. We had a week of confused speculation because people don't know what they're doing.

Yep... If they can't comprehend the nda for no leaking, they're already dumb. Add in being a bad player and leaks usually are pretty lol worthy in retrospect.

You can reduce the fade time for load/transition screens to speed them up a bit.
A value of "0" might work but I didn't test it.

Code:
[General]
fAutoDoorFadeSecs=0.0001
fFastTravelFadeSecs=0.0001
fLoadGameFadeSecs=0.0001
fNormalDoorFadeSecs=0.0001
fNormalDoorFadeWait=0.0001
fLoadGameFadeSecs=0.0001

[Interface]
fFadeToBlackFadeSeconds=0.0001
MinSecondsForLoadFadeIn=0.0001
fSleepFaderTime=0.0001

I must say I have noticed some impressive attention to detail. I am in New Atlantis just taking it all in.
When I arrived at New Atlantis I went straight to the quest marker without exploring the city, but the sensation of a massive area that was foreign to me (one that, I’m assuming, I’ll eventually get to know) was really quite palpable.

I felt like a freshman university student being overwhelmed by the size of the campus on the first day.

looks like Baldur's Gate 3 has locked down GOTY...Tears of the Kingdom as runner-up
This game and those two basically have nothing in common. Each is completely different. Someone who likes BG3 might not like Zelda at all, same applies with Starfield.

It's like comparing Contra to Civilization.

what does that have to do with GOTY?...BG3 is going to win GOTY...Tears of the Kingdom will get some consideration as well

You argued the better part of 2021 that Cyberpunk 2077 is trash without actually playing the game, are we doing this again, or have you actually played the game this time?

go away...you have issues...I never said CP2077 was 'trash'...please link to my post where I said that...of course you won't be able to...you just want attention...you take the opposite stance on everything to sound edgy...a game that's popular you'll criticize...a game that gets bad reviews you'll take the opposite stance...you do the same thing with every game

I read reviews on CP2077 and held off on buying it...I was right...they improved the game immensely and now it's getting a major overhaul with the expansion and 2.0 update...I think I gave CP2077 a 7.5 at release based on reviews I trust...I bought a Starfield code from someone selling it for $35, I posted that earlier in this thread...will I play it on Tuesday?...I'm not sure...it needs the FOV fix at a bare minimum...and I said the game sounds like an 8/8.5...again I posted all this already in this thread if you go back and look...not every game is a 10 or a zero...most games fall in-between...there is nothing wrong with waiting to play a game based on reviews or scoring it an 8 based on what I read...that's the entire point of reviews

I don't need to play games on Day 1...From Software games might be the exception but I didn't buy Armored Core 6 yet so even that is not a certainty (again I made the decision based on reviews I trust...sounds like a good game but not something I need to play right away)...I'm not buying every single game and then deciding if I like it...I have my trusted sources
