Starfield

This game is a ridiculous timesink - and absolutely unbelievably stable for a 2023 released game let alone a Bethesda developed one! 691 minutes in a single session (with in-game menu pauses throughout the day). CP2077 wasn't able to do that (usually crashed after 15-20 minutes within the in-game pause menu). Sure the Creation Engine is jank and old and blablabla but... man I just can't believe it ran all day without a single crash.

I haven't played a game this much in a single session since well... the Skyrim midnight release I suppose. It's nice to know it's still possible for me to enjoy a game to this extent at least. The last 10 years or so had me worried with mounting cynicism and just disinterest towards most large gaming releases. Only downside is I am sore from gaming all day now haha.

I am enjoying this game a bit. Story is whatever and some of the missions that get added are meh as well. However, I like the feel of the world etc. I haven’t finished a Fallout game since 3 so if I finish this it would be grand. The gunplay is a joke and most of weapons feel the same thus far. However, I am only level 7 so quick to judge. Already spent 7 hours on this over the weekend which is not normal. They must’ve done something right.

I had to go about 20 mins back in saves, but the second time I took that exact ship over, it didn't take off... for whatever reason. So I managed to commandeer it without making it my home ship. Which is good, considering it doesn't even have a bed. So you can't just go back to it to restore health. The more I'm using it, the more I realize that the UI is hot garbage, too. Just in general. This game took them 10 years? Also, I can't actually register the ship without making it my home ship anyway, and without it being registered I have to leave it behind anyway... kind of annoying.

Also encountered a glitched mission where for some reason the "Left Behind" scientist just auto canceled itself. I go into the cave where they're supposed to be at and find them alive and well, and all of the aliens dead. For some reason that's been happening a lot; any cave I enter, all of the enemies are already dead somehow.

Definitely those 10 years of polish showing themselves.

I agree about ship inventories 1) being way too small. How can I personally carry more than some ships? Seeing as how the ship is the most logical place to keep components so you can access from anywhere, it is frustrating 2) getting dumped on the new ship, which already comes with a ton of junk to take up weight.

That said, your whole situation seems pretty awesome. You got kidnapped by pirates and hauled off into space, unscripted.
You then killed all of the pirates and took over the ship.
It is stuff like this that are a selling point of the game

I wouldn't have minded them taking off with me in it, if it didn't FORCE me to make that ship my home ship, which overstuffed its inventory and left me without a bed to heal in. Definitely dumb and glitchy. I don't think their inventory being small is the stupidest part (although it is pretty dumb to be sure), it's how they make it so only your "home" ship has inventory. Why don't they allow splitting of inventory across ships? It's absolutely ASININE to be limited to one ship's cargo if you have a fleet. That's the whole goddamn point of having multiple ships, is to spread out their duties. =_= Sounds like yet another cut corner...

Anyway for now I took care of it by just throwing all my money from wondering around at Atlantis, at the ship builder as soon as I landed on the next story mission planet:

1694403130341.png

It looks incredibly stupid, but it barely flies and has 1710 cargo...! Next I just need to upgrade its generator so it actually has enough power to use more systems but whatever lol. I can't just add a generator because apparently if you go down to 14LY, you're unable to jump at all. Cool.

I'm also going to complain a bit about this ship builder. It's incredibly limited. I don't expect Space Engineers level of customization, but what the hell? You're only able to "flip" parts? Like just flip? Can't even rotate? This just screams "we were too lazy to actually implement checking to make sure that your engines all go in the same direction, so we decided to just force all parts to be aligned along a certain axis". Yet, for some reason, they did decide to check the landing gears... but not for symmetry. As you can see I have just one leg hanging off towards the front. Although it's completely impractical. Because in reality the ship would just do barrel rolls unless the side it's on overcompensated by lowering output, which would also defeat the point of the leg to begin with.

New Atlantis was (save scum) pickpocket city, free money everywhere, but pickpocketing is kind of pointless when quests give so much more money. I do still go around and pickpocket everyone I can just for ammo and giggles. I did it on Cydonia . I also steal everything that's not nailed down, but it feels sort of pointless. Why do things sell for so little? As I understand it, after registration, ships also basically sell for pennies. This is stupid. You don't "fix" the economy by making it pointless to do a majority of activities in your game...

The DLSS mods are known to cause crashing. So....removing the mod may help ;)

Yeah, disabling Luke's DLSS mod mostly fixed my crashing. I just get a crash to desktop every now and then when loading a save, but that's not really a big deal and doesn't give me a driver crash error. The game actually runs smoother, too.

I'm just going to leave a few dumb images here, next.

Super hidden.

(she stayed like this all conversation)

I think the main selling point of this game is all of the mods that will hopefully be made for it and then turn it into an actual good game. Right now, I am certainly playing it because it's something to do and it was free with my 7800X3D, but am I enjoying it? Well enough, I guess? I'm a sucker for space exploration games, so it works. I have hundreds of hours in No Man's Sky and Space Engineers.

Edit: Also, Sarah is annoying as crap. I wish I could jettison her.

Found this vid that should be helpful for anyone that's having trouble with the space combat or ship building. It teaches how to build a capable ship early game for like 40k credits and also has couple very useful dogfighting tricks in the demonstration portion. You can follow the steps one by one and it will remove all the uncertainties you have with ship building.

That little peanut has nothing on my star destroyer. Then again I have 3 class C reactors in it 😇

Just shows how configuration dependent this stuff is - Cyberpunk was rock solid stable at release for me, think I had maybe 2 crashes in my entire ~60 hour first play through. Starfield hasn't crashed much, (by Bethesda standards) just a couple times so far, but in like a 10th of the total time.

I have ran into my first unrecoverable bug, and I'd have to go far back in saves to fix it so I'm not going to. The ship services technician on Neon has vanished. Apparently NPC's like this pretty commonly are just disappearing in peoples games. I could use console to fix it, but I'm letting it go for now, at least it's not a super important NPC, but still annoying.

Do we know if the planet biomes the flora and fauna on all the planets are procedurally generated or hand crafted? I'm assuming the planets with cities and quest areas have at least some hand crafted zones. I'm thinking/wondering about how easy it's going to be to expand the variety we see in game. Right now the flora and fauna is very limited and so are the biome variety. It really hurts wanting to do the little exploration there is in the game. I'm looking past it for now being my first play through.

If you're playing Starfield on an AMD graphics card, there's a good chance you've missed one of the most glaring bugs in the game, because you just won't have seen anything...the AMD-sponsored Bethesda game simply doesn't render a local star from any planet without an atmosphere on an AMD card

And yet the stars will blaze away until the end of time on an Nvidia GPU...

I have a real "dum-dum" question:

When the inventory stacks multiples of the same weapon, does that mean their stats are identical?

Or is there some manner of splitting up the stack so I can pick which ones I want to keep etc?

Thanks

Yes.

So if your looking for a pretty good ship that easy to get do the quest
Overdesigned

You can pick it from
Walter Stroud
at the Lodge.
There are few steps to ge there but it's worth it. You will also have to put a few points in ship tech to fly it.

You can get two types of ship from this... when you get to the 'testing' phase, make sure one of the missions is "destroy some pirate ships" or such. First time I did it, I didn't get the "good" one.

Is that the mission where the second part is you helping design the ship? I saw a breakdown of that mission and it looked worth following the guide. :ROFLMAO:

The Star Eagle you get from the Ranger questline is pretty nice early on. Having 2000+ cargo in a class A is really helpful.

I just encountered my first major bug. I was supposed to fight off waves of attacking spacers, but for some reason the second wave never arrived. I entered a building, came out then they were already there. But then the third wave didn't want to come yet again, and going in and out didn't help this time. I thought I was F-ked and have to load a save from hours ago. But luckily the game allows you to leave the planet mid mission, so taking off and landing again finally triggered the 3rd wave to spawn, so I was able to complete the mission.

So if anyone encounters problems with a mission not progressing just take off and land again it should do the trick.

All this game is missing is seemless travel between space and planets.
Nah, you'd fast travel anyway after trying it once. Who wants to waste half an hour to decelerate from orbit speeds for every landing?

What it's missing is the ability to claim existing abandoned outposts and structures as your own. I just found a great site it even had a landing pad, why can't I just put my flag on it after clearing out the pirates?

I managed to 'fix' my missing ship technician on Neon by traveling to a different location, saving, restarting the game, and traveling back. He then was around on the platform on Neon, but of course, after about only 10 seconds decided to walk off the edge of the platform again and drown himself.

But at least I figured out a temporary solution to 'fix' NPC's back to their original location without using console commands.

Has anyone tried enabling re-bar manually for nvidia cards? Supposedly, there are pretty serious gains to be had by doing this. (Assuming you aren't entirely CPU limited) Why nvidia doesn't have this enabled in the latest drivers for this game, who knows.

They sure make it sound as if this is some evil deliberate agenda. As a programmer this is what we call a dirty shortcut (if I deciphered the technobabble correctly). There is always a way to do something faster, you can get old trying to optimize even a 10k line code. Let alone a game of this size. The open source community is basically an infinite resources cheat code to find faults. I feel the hatred emanating from whoever wrote this :D Such strong language.

Its reddit, thats what they do. I just thought it was interesting, the last time we had an issue like this was Skyrim and they solved that issue with the SE and like 40-50% fps gain.

Yea I think at this point Nvidia is probably paying programmers to show how bad the coding is and just blame AMD lol.

The last wave I ran up and tossed a grenade into the bay soon as the landing ramp opened, killed all of them.
I was going to jump in and see if I could get into the ship but the gate raised soon as everyone died and I missed it.

For those that spend a lot of time in Starfield, outside of main story quests and side quests what is there to do? Is it essentially random generated planets and random generated fetch quests or are there a lot of unique and crafted areas to explore? Are there any smaller unique missions like the side gigs in Cyberpunk 2077 (15 or so minutes mini missions with some lore)?

Going off of how long to beat, main story and side quests seem to be shorter than Fallout 4 so kind of wondering what else there is to do.

There are handcrafted POIs in space and on planets. Some are towns/hubs with quests, others are enemy bases. You can see them from the star map. For one example Google "Crucible".
Keep in mind you can also see some generic stuff from space too, ie: "Abandoned Robotics Facility". So you have to learn to separate them. Why did Bethesda do that? Your guess is as good as mine.

Space also has events that occur when you warp into orbit. As far as I can tell there's only like 20 of those.

There are also like 30 temples to find. Ship building and outposts too. And at the very end you run loops of NG+.

Howlongtobeat shows main+extra is 45 hours which is total horse shit. The game hasn't been out long enough to accurately judge its length.

From what I’ve seen the game is similar length. I’m at 60 hours BTW and only have 1 faction quest completed, and only just starting another. Barely any systems explored. Constantly inundated with side missions. The game is pretty massive.

Yeah I am thinking the average will go up over time. I think I may have to play this one later, I don't want to rush through it.

The game looks decent from what I've seen but I think I'll wait for a few patches to come out and maybe it will even be few bucks less by then.

I'm curious how many of the side quests are generic and how generic they are too.

The radiant ai quests in Skyrim ruined the game enough for me that I couldn't even make it halfway through a second playthrough, they still sucked in FO4 but there was enough unique stuff that I was able to ignore them for the most part.

Radiants in this game are very easy to ignore. They basically just come from the mission terminals. Every other side quest is fairly unique. The faction missions are pretty huge. Each one has a cool storyline within the game itself and takes a decent amount of time to complete.

I assume faction missions count as side missions?
