Starcraft II

I wasn't surprised MVP wrecked house against MKP. MVP knows pretty much every viable terran strategy and doesn't fail on any of them; the guy lost one game the entire GSL (to NesTea) from an unlucky burrowed baneling. He played a game where he was elevating marauders while microing marines. He's just a powerhouse; I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Speaking of Nestea... I think a small part of me died when his mutalisk flew over all of MVP's stimmed marines.

Good thing I put a 20 on MVP going 4-0. That guy is just a powerhouse, plays flawlessly almost every game.

MKP is a one-trick pony and makes for boring games. It was fun watching him spam marines vs Nestea's banelings during their first set and then it just got repetitive.

Yeah, that first game he took off MVP in the semis was such a tease. I got so frickin hopeful after it, and then... well then it went the way I expected it to go.

On another note, Gom announced the new map pool for the GSL Team League that starts on the 7th.

Team Liquid Thread with all the details.

Yea I wonder what was going on with Nestea while facing MVP. The Shakuras Plateau match seemed practically over in his favor, but MVP just came back and steamrolled him.

NesTea played a perfect macro Zerg game on Shakuras (he got like 4 hatcheries vs. MVP's 2). Creep was spread, mining was saturated, minerals were low. MVP is just an awesome player, man. His marine/tank micro makes banelings almost worthless.

According to a battle.net newspost there's new ladder maps up as kind of a preview on the PTR. Might actually fire it up just to see how they look.

Can someone give me a "for dummies" explanation of how ladder rankings work? I read a few posts on TL last night but there were so many numbers and acronyms that it just all started to run together. It makes no sense to me that someone who is ~ 78-72 is 1 spot above me (who is ~ 28-22) and our points are like 20 off from each other or something? Then the person 1 spot below me is ~12-14?? Doesn't make sense. And while I understand that basically the more you win, the more you move up, the specifics are pretty vague. I assume so that people won't figure it out and abuse the system.

Anyways, I'm still in a broze league for those who care but have been winning consistently lately.(played 4-5 1v1's last night which I won all of, granted a couple of them were a joke. Some Terran guy tried to fly his CC into my base? I shot it down with my 5-6 marines and that was it. Not sure what his plan was.) I've adapted my play style depending on what opponent I am playing against and used to have a bad habit of opening strong and just letting everything go to shit.

Still would like some gold/diamond players to rape my face so I can improve *cough cough* :)

The rankings are actually determined by something called the MMR (I think it just means matchmaking rating) that you can't actually see. Your record and that point total you're seeing are only a very general indicator of what your actual rating is.

The guy one spot below you being 12-14 might still have a similar MMR because he got matched against significantly tougher players than you did. A win against another low MMR Bronze player will count for less toward your own MMR than say a win against a low Platinum guy. If you beat a few guys with a similar MMR, then the matchmaking system will start pitting you against players with a higher ranking. That rating is also how the game determines who's favored during the loading screen.

As far as wanting practice, let me know. I usually hop on a couple times a week at least.

Summary:

- Displayed Points are meaningless. Bonus Pool inflates displayed points. To get more points, just use up bonus pool but it doesn't mean someone with more points is ranked higher in their internal system.
- Your actual skill and who you play against as well as what's used to determine promotion / demotion in leagues is a hidden MMR (match making rating)
- MMR is similar to a typical ladder system (think chess). In theory you will eventually reach your correct MMR rating and stagnate there, winning 50% of your games (barring sudden shifts in player skill). Since people want perpetual progression, bonus pool is introduced to inflate the meaningless displayed points.

Okay, so the PTR is back up with a preview of a few of the new ladder maps. And for some strange reason, no one is playing on the public test realm. Some of the new maps are really great, some of them don't fix the problem of small rush distances and probably won't last. Blizzard needs data and feedback on these maps so that the actual retail version of the game gets a much improved map pool. If you want Starcraft 2 to be a better game, please start playing on the PTR, I can't implore you enough how important of role you'll be playing in the future of the game. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE play PTR and provide feedback, it's what the community needs.

I'd love to know what my MMR is, I'm in diamond but against masters, though my points are not even that high. Maybe I'll be promoted some time. Though I rarely play now. Maybe 1-2 games (+plus a few custom) per 2 weeks.

Last night I played my first ever game of SC2! I started off on the little "intro" league and boy do I need it, I don't know how people do so many tasks at once (let me put it this way, my APM is probably around...20). At one point I had 5500+ minerals and 4000+ gas I was sitting on because I'm not able to focus on spending it.

TONS of fun though, I actually won but I have alot to learn!!!

Take it one step at a time. :) Maybe start off with the single player on normal or casual difficulty. However, keep in mind that many of the units and tech are in single player only. At least you'll have a decent environment to get used to the game mechanics.

I played the SC and Brood War campaigns (with a few "power overwhelming" cheats) but have never taken the time to get decent at RTS games despite how much I enjoy them. Heck, I didn't know there was micro in RTS games until I started watching replays...I thought you made a few units and sent them in the direction of the enemy.

I used Protoss on my game last night which have changed a bit since the first game. Really the reason I won is because my opponent didn't make enough units, not because I did anything particularly good.

I look forward to learning the game though!

If you just started playing and you're making more units than other players you're on the right track. Better macro is how you'll win a lot of your games, it takes a while for games to start being won or lost due to superior micro.

I do some coaching for people who need it, so if anyone here needs help or has questions feel free to add me on SC2. rigphoria.123 is my handle. Should add that I'm a mid-rank diamond zerg player with lots of recent experience with protoss.

Yeah, he didn't expand until really late and then it was with no defense. I brought one Colossus and it got probably 15 SCV kills before he could respond.

I'd love some help and coaching although Protoss is what I plan on using (I may try my hand at Terran)...I never got the hang of Zerg in the old game. Still, I assume the basics are universal.

I'll add ya, thanks!

Just got the game 2 days ago ,and I'm loving the game play definitely worth the money so far. Can't wait till I finish the campaign so I can start doing some online play.

I just got it not too long ago. I never played Starcraft 1 online, I played a bit of passing the mouse back and forth with a friend. Reading this thread is discouraging... way over my head.

hehe...i worked my way up to 20th in my league. Then i dunno wtf happened, I'm last in bronze now. I guess just bad picks?
I did kick some ass in a FFA match. Nearly got finished off but I'm the king of stupid comebacks.

Anyone else watch the GSTL? Definitely worth the $5..

I was pretty underwhelmed for a lot of it, with the coaches making terrible player choice after terrible player choice.

That said, the finals were pretty much incredibile and worth the $5 on their own.

Yeah, I'm actually just talking about the finals. Totally have forgotten about the semis/ro8.

Yeah, definitely a ton of fun, although I've only played two games (no campaign yet). Just feels so polished!

Indeed , it could also be this is my first computer with some awesome specs (compared to anything I have ever owned) , never been able to play a game a 54fps and 1080p, just looks so nice.

Same, I just replaced my computer that I built in '04/'05 (A64 3400+, DFI Lanparty UT3, 1GB PC4000, X800 XT PE). I woulda bought SC2 sooner but there was no way I coulda played it!

Just a heads up, for great 1v1 practice and instant feedback from high players, try playing the "1v1 Obs Xel'Naga caverns" Customs map.

One the best best maps ever for practicing.

Bah, the ending of the finals completely ruined it for me :(
Game 9 was pathetic...

Short does not equal pathetic. It was very well played, with heavy pressure from one player and a borderline hero defense from the other. Don't see what was so pathetic about it. And he held the counter-attack for a couple of minutes longer than I expected him to before he finally lost control of the fight and had to GG.

It was a great game, just not a 45 minute long epic like a couple of the others. Don't see how a perfectly good final game can ruin a whole final series... especially when the road to said game was pretty much incredible.

Yep. Length, army sizes and close matches don't account for all awesome performances in SC2. Even if it's one-sided, we get to see how solid the winning player performed and how bad losing player did.

So, I'm most of the way through the campaign now and I've got to say, this is the best RTS campaign I've ever played by a good bit. On SC/Brood War the campaign felt more like thrown together, plot-less series of missions that were essentially identical (build base, defeat overwhelming enemy, next mission). The way these played out with the on-ship story and upgrades and such is just fantastic.

I've only played 3 multiplayer games thus far but I'm sure once I finish the campaign I'll jump into it.

Thor's are half worthless as it is. 20% damage increase to massive means jack and shit. Thor ground range for a Thor is 7 where Colossus with Thermal Lance is 9. Plus with that minor (and useless) buff Terran is still getting nerfed again with repair. VR's will just own a Thor post patch because Thor AA is pretty piss poor in reality.

Tanks half-assed? Check.
Depot before Rax? Check.
Reapers the most worthless unit in the game? Check.
Can't repair BC/Tanks/Thor/Barracks to make them cost effective? Check.

At this rate it may be time to switch to Protoss...

You can't repair your your units as terran? wtf?

Vermillion sounds like a frustrated bronze player.

Reapers aren't useless, they beat hellions 1v1 and counter the new early game in TvT with the helion opening nicely.

Tanks are half-assed? I don't even...
