Starcraft II

How does the terran not know you are getting carriers? What league is this?

Diamond league. I'm ~750 pt diamond and the people I get matched up against are about 800 to 1,000 pt diamonds.

He totally knew I was getting carriers. He scanned me and wrote, "lol" when he saw one building. The big problem he had was over-committing on his two big pushes. First he ran and lost too many marines (at least 20 of them) into my base to try to kill my mineral line. That put him too far behind so I could expand safely. Then he over-committed when he pushed into my base with 8 reapers (and lost them all) then pushed back in with 4 more of them and manged to take out my nexus but lost them too. At that point I was able to push forward with 2 carriers, a dozen zealots and 4 or 5 stalkers and clean him up. The carriers killed a bunch of marines and took out medivacs filled with marines and after that it was just a-click and win. I'll post the replay when I get home from work.

Well, he loled and then he asked me what league I am in, so I told him bronze and he tried to correct my strategy by telling me not to go carriers. Then my 2 carriers finished up with probably 20+ kills and he said at the end, "I gave you too long to build up". Nevermind that he pressed me hard early. Satisfying win :).

So I have been playing zerg, and am trying to figure out what the best way is to get new units to my army, especially later in the game.

I have found myself in battle for a few minutes, making combat units from command group, but when the action dies down, I move my camera back to my base to find 10+ units sitting around. Now, I don't want to send every unit forward (overlord, etc), but is there any easy way to keep new muta heating toward my existing muta army, lings to lings, etc?

I am thinking that when I queue up the larvae is the best chance to make their waypoint, but I don't know if I'm good enough to keep up on that. Just wondering what other tactics zerg players use.

You can just set the waypoint to a unit in battle, or just have it near where you are. It's too bad they cant have another waypoint option for overlords like they do with drones.

Just set a rally...

hatcheries have 2 rally points, one for workers and one for everything else. By default if you right click a mineral node or gas, it sets the worker rally point. If you rick click anywhere else it sets the normal unit rally point.

I rally overlords manually by selecting larva, morphing overlords (nothing else), then right clicking somewhere on the minimap while the eggs / larva are still selected. This will manually rally the overlords so they don't fly to their deaths as I rally all my normal troops into battle.

I guess I just need to keep on it better. I don't have access to test right now, but I have all my hatcheries on one command group. This means that all my larvae are selected. When I set the rally point, does it set the rally point on all selected larvae and morphing larvae, or just the morphing ones? Meaning if I have 5 units morphing in, and the other larvae still selected, will it set the rally of just the 5? Or will I have to drop non-morphing larvae before setting the rally to current army?

Rally only works on eggs. Larva don't have the ability to rally.

If you rally from the hatchery all eggs will rally automatically unless manually overriden.

Awesome, thank you guys.

Just need to practice doing "5", "s", "t", rally point to flying army, "5", "s", "h", ground army, etc.

Decided to drop my 1v1 Protoss vs. Protoss in Silver here. Someone cannon rushed me successfully and I still won:

http://fenili.net/download/1v1 - PvP - Rediculous Comeback - Metalopolis.SC2Replay

I'm not stating it was a match of champions... we both made mistakes throughout the game, but I ended up on the winning end, which earned me a /bow. :)

PvP kind of becomes a shitshow often times.

My roommate is 1800 diamond protoss and his PvP's are ... laughable at best. Just yesterday he played a 1930 diamond protoss. He did a proxy 2 gate while his opponent did a cannon rush.

The game ended in a 4 hour long stalemate in which my roommate left the game after he got fed up.

I don't know how many of you watch the Day9 dailys, but I've been having a lot of fun with carriers lately, especially against Terran. Had a guy push hard with an early marine push followed by a grip of reapers while I went carriers, zealots and stalkers and beat him pretty handily. If there is a cliff or you catch someone not microing carriers absolutely rape marines.

I've been doing diamond 1v1 for a while now, carriers are insanely difficult to pull off. Carriers get completely nullified any time your opponent has mass t1 forces that have AA ability, because they'll destroy all your interceptors in a heartbeat. If you can mass enough carriers to kill off that fleet, its likely that they didn't scout your carriers. If you try to hit and run with carriers by abusing the corner of a map with a ledge, you will lose all your intercepters to t1 units camping that corner. The only way to win with carriers is to abuse ledges and pray your opponent doesnt scan / overlord / have collossi or air units to expose you.

Do you get anything nifty for your achievement levels like, battlenet profile pics? I'm working on it slowly lol.

If an achievement will provide you with a profile pic or logo that will be visible as a little gold medal in the lower corner of the achievement. When the achievement is expanded it will show what you receive.

Alternatively you can enter the achievements section of your profile and mouse over each to see what is required to receive that particular award.

That was silver vs. silver, so we both made mistakes along the way. I was fortunate that he didn't have a clue how to use those void rays mid-way through the game, which gave me more time to expand. He also failed to notice I had an entire expansion down by the time his cannon rush was in full swing (one standard counter for a cannon rush is to quick build an expansion so no extraction time is lost.) Simple exploration would've made this an easy win for him, but since I had time to warp in tons of units that countered him (and because I built an expansion base to give my "new" main base which took him time to conquer) I ended up winning.

Nice work, good replay ;D

Thanks--I think a thorough analysis of that game would easily provide newbies with 2 valuable, race-agnostic lessons:

1) Know how to handle a cannon rush, regardless of which race you are playing; and
2) Explore CONSTANTLY so you know where your opponent is

The replay is a PERFECT example of these two lessons--watching my opponent's otherwise brilliant cannon rush collapse from his point-of-view shows why exploration is required. Watching how I handled the cannon rush once it was succeeding is also a valuable lesson, IMO.

I think I actually agree with the vast majority of these proposed changes. My favorite change by far is the reaper changes. I'm not sure if it was necessary to go so far as to make barracks require supply depot AND make the speed a factory upgrade... but something definitely needed to be done about early reapers.

I think I ranted about reapers in this thread some time ago, but the basic gist was that reaper cheesing is far too strong in team games and even (maybe especially) at the diamond level it turns into reaper or get reapered.

I love that dustin bowder added the "especially in team games" line to the reaper changes. Seems like they're finally realizing what's going on.

These buffs to zerg are just going to make zerg the go to class for power players, imo. Diamond league is not representative of competition level players.

I'm predicting a Roach nerf in a following patch. Though we will have to see in practice, but I think even a 1 range upgrade to 3 to 4 might be much more powerful then it seems on paper. But for the time being since I like roach openings over speedling/baneling, I'll take it. Might be able to fit infestors in earlier by using less Hydras due to the increased range.

I always thought they should tie in Reapers to the engineering bay to prevent some of the issues, as it would also make sense from a "fluff" stand point. Factory has the added gas cost, but it also does put the player further up the tech tree to transition. Can't really say which would've worked better.

The win % stats seem to support what I have always been thinking though. Protoss "mass" and "macro" is relatively easier to use and manage, with warpgates, chrono, and relatively effective attack move unit compositions.

Reapers in team games are way too strong. They move faster than any other unit early game. Chasing them around the map is a bitch. Then there is that one map with 4 shared bases by teammates with a high ground behind two bases, if you do not have any zerg teammates with overlords, reapers can really take advantage of that high ground.

I think it's the extinction map that we did this on, but back in the beta my friends and I regularly jumped our reapers on some cliffs overhanging the main mineral lines of each player and they really couldn't do anything to top it for quite a while unless they had an ovie. It was total cheese and let you jump way ahead in macro. I don't think this patch will change that at all honsetly, I'd still be able to pump out reapers fast enough to use high ground.

I'm very curious to see how the roach range plays out.

Same. I play Zerg exclusively, and I find myself using Roaches in opening stages of the game only. Sometimes I'll tech the tunneling and play with that mid-game, usually in team games for shits and giggles (I find tunneling Infestors to be more effective - taking down saturated planetary fortress and some 20 SCV's with nothing bot infested terrans is just awesome :D).

I play random most of the time. I do like the idea of the tech tree going through the factory for the reapers, as it would still allow for a lot of flexibility.

Hmm so I hardly ever play zerg, and I'm ~60 rank diamond, and I decided to try my hand at aggressive 6 pooling. I went 11-2, and the only 2 games I lost were against other zerg....6 pooling is very powerful with micro and nonstop production.

Yeah, because most people at higher lvls do fast expand rather than 6 pool, though as you said, 6 pool executed well is very effective.

If I play as zerg facing a zerg, I always scout on 6-7 now. 6 pool is very easy to hold off in 1v1's. 1 spine crawler, plus queen, plus a few lings will hold off any 6 pool. Now on the smaller 1v1 maps, it is harder, but not on the bigger 2v2's I really think the Reaper changes are far to much. I do't mind the supply depot before racks, but speed upgrade at the factory? WTF??

Yea I feel they dont need both the speed after factory and rack after supply. Only need one of those, but overall the speed after factory really hurts reapers and they probably will not be used much anymore.

I just met a girl through a friend that plays sc2 and shes hot. CHyea we are having a lan party for our second date. CHYEA!!!!

LOL, nice. That's always cool to hear :D Incidentally, I have an ex-model wife who loves to console game. Wish it was PC gaming, but can't complain too much :D

No no, fast expand so you can secure a early financial point for mass producing.

Does anybody have a spare guest pass around? Ive been trying to get one so my little cousin can play with me online. I gave both of mine away.

I might have one somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and pass it your way. My wife may have thrown them away though...
