Hey guys,

I'm looking for a cheap PC that is able to run SC2. (I already have 2 laptop, so this PC will be only used to play SC 2 and maybe, other future blizzard game (Diablo 3).

Can you tell me if these spec are good enough to play SC 2 in "high resolution" ?

Thanks !

- VENTO TA-863 ATX MID TOWER BLACK, USB2. 80MM FAN
- X-SUPPLY PSU 550W ATX
- ASROCK H55M-GE SKT.1156 INTEL H55 2PCI/3X PCI-E 4DDR3
- INTEL QUAD CORE I5-760 LGA1156 2.8GHz 8Mo
- KINGSTON 4Go (2 X 2Go) KVR1333D3N9K2/4G
- ASUS EAH5770 CUCORE/2DI/1GD5 #VC-AS-EAH5770/CU
- WD 500Go SATA II 16Mo 7200RPM

I would think about gettting a name brand PSU, otherwise your good to go.

I think you posted in the wrong section.

Should I change the motherboard "ASROCK" for a cheap Asus mortherboard (Asus P7P55) ? Because I really don't know the brand "ASROCK" ..

Two things:
1) You're worrying about the wrong part. The PSU is the major issue with that setup: Get a higher quality and brand named PSU rather than some generic POS. Corsair, Seasonic, and Antec should have PSUs available in whatever country you're in. However, avoid Antec's Basiq line. Something like the Antec Neo Eco 520C 520W PSU, Seasonic M12II 500W PSU, or the Corsair 450VX would be good choices for that PC. YOu want to aim for at least a quality 450W PSU.
2) Asrock is Asus' value brand. With that said, Switch to Asus if you want. It's your money.

Besides that, you're good to go. But to recap: GET A BETTER PSU!

EDIT: Oh and what resolution will you be playing that game at? In other words, what's the max resolution of your monitor?

Never a bad idea to upgrade the PSU to something of more quality as people have stated since power supplies are generally not too expensive. I can personally vouch though that those specs are more than enough to run SC2 on high. My friend has a computer that has all the minimum specs listed on the game (pentium 4 seriously?, 6600GT seriously) etc, and he's able to run at low settings extremely smoothly. The game isn't very graphically intense when compared to those first person shooters at all. I'm running at high and my specs are no where close to yours. Best of luck man, it's an amazing game. 20/10 !

If it were me I would stay far away from any of the OCZ power supplies. When OCZ first started in the P/S buisness they were very much top of the line. The split the company with the high quality parts being PC Power & Cooling. With OCZ's new strategy it has been very much hit or miss on quality control.

I personally use in my oem builds, sparkle, mushkin, and in-win power supplies. And for the kids who have to have the larger named (mostly marketing hype) brands I will use corsair, enermax or if they are willing to put down the money pc power & cooling.

Anyone of those companies produces very good power supplies. You can also go by the 80+ certifications if you have question to the quality of a power supply, chances are if they pass the 80+ certs the manufacture has used quality parts to build the P/S.

what is your definition of high resolution, and at what settings?

I run @ 2560x1600 with a 5970, @ ultra settings, and I get good framerates, at least it doesn't lag much I ran fraps, it reported 40-45 in heavy battle situations and about 75-80 with moderate action.

maybe I missed it but did you give a budget?

agree on the PSU.

if money is tight there are places to trim, you don't need a i series cpu for instance, a core 2 or phenom 2 based system would be plenty and would shave a buck fifty or better off that. (more then enough to upgrade your PSU and maybe a monitor upgrade)

also I didn't see a OS included in that. I assume win 7 64?

I would not get that monitor. its not bad but you can get a pretty damn cheap 1080p monitor that would probably be better. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236074 164 AR shipped for instance. I think your money would be better spent going here

actually the Pc described above will cost me 850$ CAD (replace the PSU by a THermaltake TR2 500W)

I don't buy an OS because I already have Viste and 7.

What do you think about this deal ?

Pretty damn shitty if you go with the Thermaltake TR2 500W. The TR2 series is Thermaltake's low quality brand. Not meant for a gaming system and barely adequate for a home PC. So yeah, not a smart idea to buy that PSU.

Can't believe I'm saying this but you're better off with the OCZ ModXStream Pro than with that TR2.

Oh and the case is crap too: Still uses 80mm fans which are either too loud or too slow. Not good enough to cool that setup well. Go with the Antec 300.

Seriously for $850 CAD, I think you can do a whole lot better than that setup at least in regards to the PSU and case.

What price are you getting that case at? There are very cheap 120mm fan cases now available ($30-45), you might want to look into one of those instead.

Thermaltake's TR2 might be the lower end of their spectrum, but I have a system with a 430w TR2 and another one with a 500w TR2, both are older gaming systems, and they have had the most stable voltages of any other power supply I've ever owned. Of course, I have never owned Antec, but I've used every other major brand at some point or another.

For the record, most people spend too much money on their power supply. At idle my system runs with a total draw of 190w and under load 280w. Mind you, I built this system with low voltage devices (85w CPU, 1.5v memory, etc...), so I don't recommend getting a 300w PSU to anybody, but I'm happily running with a considerable bit of overhead on an OCZ StealthXStream 700w. This one does have a very slight variation on the 12v rail, and static .008v sag on the vcore, but overall I'm happy enough with it.

to be honest given your objective I would be re balancing it a little. a better PSU/case/monitor are in order. an i5 is nice but not at the expensive of other components.

and where you planning on getting that monitor or did you already have it?

Somehow I doubt that.

Well first and foremost: You don't actually have that much headroom: The StealthXStream series was/is based off the FSP Episilon PSU design which has out of spec ripple, or voltage fluctuations, at high loads (past 500W) that can damage or kill your system. Granted, you may not reach such high loads but why pay for a PSU that can kill your system?

So in reality you only have a 500W PSU with a about 120W of headroom if your wattage figures are correct.

Also, the price difference between the TR2 500W and The OCZ ModXStream 600W is a mere $4 (Prices from newegg). How is that spending too much on a significantly higher quality PSU?

For the record, how much it too much money in your eyes to spend on a PSU?

they do but WAY more people spend too little. a QUALITY 400+ watt would serve him well, you can get it cheap (Hell I can provided links, 33 bucks AR here for a corsair 400 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewProduct.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008). but really this is the one area you don't want to skimp.

I don't think he should be cutting out the i5 from his build. I would NOT recommend a dual core cpu for a new system build these days. But he does need to invest in a quality PSU. You can get a good one for around $100 easy. So there's no reason not to do it.

budget is budget, and 330 for a mobo plus i5 760. he can pick up a amd 940 quad with motherboard for around 200 if that deal is still up. the i5 is of course better except he will never know the difference with what he is playing. on the other hand a better monitor will make a big difference and we both know that a quality psu is worth the money.

and for reference to the op here is a neo watt 520 for 30 bucks AR http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/37506/antec-neo-eco-520w-atx-power-supply and even better is a corsair 650XT for 64 AR http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/37512/corsair-cmpsu650tx-650w-80-plus-certified-power-supply
