Starcraft 2 Beta

For those of you (like me) who are stuck without a StarCraft 2 Beta key, we can hold out and still practice for StarCraft 2 (or for the beta assuming we get as lucky as some of these other bastards who are getting invites) by participating in iCCup's StarCraft: Brood War tournament. They are about to start Season 12 and some of the top StarCraft players from around the world participate in the ladder. Is anyone interested? Maybe we can play together or against one another =p

From what I understand, the server is different from Battle.net and takes place with iCCup's own server and anti-hack protection, as well as their maps.

Anyone considering participating in the ladder?

The game is a blast, though I've been evening out my wins and losses.. so I think platinum division is pretty much where I stand so far.. I have some huge problems playing against terrans now. Protoss matches are not bad.. Zerg and Terran matches are up in the air.

sc 2 is so sick. Still practicing with protoss. Havent fought that many zergs, but play plenty of terran and protoss. dt are just so awesome.

I think toss are going to be my race too, warp gates are tooooo much fun. I have to get used to the new macro mechanics. I keep forgetting to chrono boost buildings.

the improvements to macro have made an immense difference. being able to hotkey a group of buildings and build without leaving the battle / wasting all of you rhotkeys on buildings is awesome.

I'm having issues relearning the new key shortcuts, even though I know I'll love them later.

so many small changes that make such a difference. I can say I'm confident SC2 is an improvement over the first at this point...as skeptical as I was at first announcement...

the balance may take some time to get as good as the original, but the changes to the mechanics of managing game play alone are just profound and needed. Its most of the stuff that used to drive me nuts but i just dealt with in theo riginal haha.

I guess opting in my macbook wasn't such a great idea  Oh well, I need to find a wireless bridge so I can opt in my pc.

.

Could someone elaborate on this? how are you managing your upgrades or buildings without the use of ctrl binding?

i meant in comparison to old starcraft.

in og starcraft, if i wanted to keep rolling out zealots, dragoons, and scouts, id have to ctrl bind my 3 gateways to 1,2,3 - and 2 starports to 4 and 5

then while in battle, id have to hit 1 z , 2 z, 3 d, 4 s, 5 s (i think thats the right unit shortuct) to que up units. ...or go back to base and manually click on buildings etc. so, 5 hotkeys for 2 building types and a bunch of clicking.

now, i can put 3 gateways to a single hotkey - lets say ctrl bind 1, select it, press zzzss, and itll que up 3 zealots and 2 stalkers, intelligently and dynamically between buildings, press 2 (hotkey for the 2 starports), and click void race 4 times, and have it put 2 per building. The buildings can be grouped and hotkeyed like units in the old one.

The difference is for example - if you had 12 battle cruisers in original starcraft, and chose yamato cannon and clicked a building...every unit would do it if possible. I dont know how units handle abilities done int he same fashion (havent played with it yet) - but now buildings are similiar. ONLY, you dhave to click zealot 4 times to have each building build one, NOT click once and every building tries to do it.

It probably sounds really convulted and confusing, but it makes perfect sense once you USE It, and its just sooo nice. I remember wishing time and time again the original starcraft could do this.

If youre still lost i'll try to explain better, but hopefully it makes sense now. Yes - youre still wasting SOME hotkeys on buildings, but its not nearly as bad as before, and the entire process of building units via hotkeys without being "at your buildigns" has been incredibly improved upon.

Yeah, in short, you can select all your gateways, but individually choose how many zealots you wanna build from it. So if you select 6 gateways and hit "z", you won't build 6 zealots simultaneously, just 1. This lets you choose as many zealots you wanna build instead of 6, 12, 18 etc. at a time.

Likewise, spells are only cast by 1 unit even if you have a bunch of the same unit selected. Say if you have 12 high templar, hit "t" and click on a spot. Instead of all 12 templar storming the same spot, only 1 will. If you hit "t" *click*, "t" *click*, "t" *click*, "t" *click* repeatedly in different spots, different high templar will storm those spots. No wasted storms. :)

Yep, and same with larva, gotta do ZZZ instead of just Z, making it easy to not build 3 new drones you can just hit the larva select button and DDZ. Makes life easier.

yeah, I love the new hotkey system. PLus, we should be able to customize our hotkeys with the release anyways....

Ntee, I play in Iccup again

I started again just to get the feel of an RTS again, help bring up my APM to where it is. But just started yesterday I'm like 3-6, those damn koreans are rediculous. I play terran too, so picking game backup and playing terran is really hard lol trying to macro mech and m&m, not like protoss or zerg where you can basically autoattack w/ most of their units.

Send me a message if you wanna do some 2v2's

you wouldnt have any idea why i can log in to the server?

Sounds like alot of people like protoss.... so are terran just not as much fun?

I never liked playing zerg because I have a thing against being a genetically modified puss flinger, and was always partial to humans. Sounds bad so far for terran though, no one is championing them.

terran + reapers = FUCK.

every race has some killer shit but even after the balance/ nerf reapers are still NASTY

hmm...

making 12 year olds spaz out... I think I will enjoy reapers.

Hilarious.

And yeah, Reapers are still the worst. I like that Blizzard is making Terrans a viable race from an offensive POV, but this clearly still needs to be balanced out. :)

BTW, watch how HDStarcraft here shuts down any possibility of an early Marauder or Reaper rush:

I can only imagine the RAGE going on the other side of that game. :D

Yeah, after the early game I also forget and don't use CB again unless I need to mass an army super fast. Every race has new base micro bonuses now to make up for the fact that everything else has been so streamlined and simplified. The Zerg IMHO has the most effective one with the Zerg Queen's larva ability. Every 30 seconds it can inject four additional larva into a hive. Its almost like getting an additional expansion for only 150 minerals and far less wait time, crazy.

Two days ago I was victim to a NASTY zergling rush, far and away the worst rush I've seen in SC2. Upon viewing the replay it was pretty clear, this guy was micro'ing his Queen like crazy, just cranking out zerglings while he teched speed boost. This combined with the current Protoss Chrono Boost nerf (30 seconds to 20 seconds) and increased Gateway build time (ugh) was not a good scene. :)

I've never been good with Zerg, their whole build strategy is just odd to me. Maybe it'll be better in SC2.

Zerg really aren't that much different to play in SC2, about the only major game change is Queen vs. FE or 2/3 Hatch. They are prolly going to get the nerf bat next patch because they are the King of cheese rushes if your timings are right.

7 Pool + speedlings or 10 Pool/Warren + roaches are dominating early games. Especially 2v2.

I am hoping Blizzard is going to slow things down a bit, most games are barely scratching the surface of Tier 2 Tech.

HDStarcraft show a very easy way to deal with the early roach rush, and thats to get Immortals as fast as you can.

that gives you units to deal with the roaches + you can build an observer to deal with the borrow.

what you really have to worry about is the strate to muta build, thats the only build i can seem to win with against the ai.

totally since blink is so much better than reaper jump, you can cross cliffs *and* gaps with stalkers. same with colossus vs. thor, they need something additional but not samey, to bridge this gap in mobility. jumps/nades/weak armor ain't cutting it imo, you can harass ai and lesser players with this but that's about it. could be why protoss seems to be dominating platinum right now, with humans not far behind.

You're absolutely right. The problem is that a rush of 6 to 8 reapers can be out well in advance of finishing the research on Stalker Blink. Reapers are pretty weak in the mid or late game, but a rush to build straight to them can be devastating to a player's economy in the early game. The best solution I've found to deal with an early rush is to place stalkers right by the mineral supply line until you've built up a larger force. I hate this because it keeps me from attacking, but sometimes it is the best (albeit most conservative) move do if you see your opponent teching straight to reapers.

Anyway, I'm very curious to see how the balance shakes out in the next patch.

roaches and immortals are next on the nerf list (imo)

I'm trying to see how immortals would be nerfed. They are later tier units that are very easily countered by air-to-ground units. They also excel against smaller groups of larger units (much like Void Rays), not large mobs of smaller units, so that's another potential counter.

I'm surprised that roaches haven't taken a hit from the nerf bat yet. That said, I'll take a roach rush over a reaper+marauder rush any day. Stalkers backed up by sentries (and hopefully an observer) are a very good counter.

still havent gotten my fucking key yet and ive been opted in for like forever

I feel your pain, honestly though DragonAge EXP comes out in like two weeks, Bad Company 2 just came out which is an awsome game. I know it's not SC2 but something to hold down the gaming fix for awhile.

Starcraft 2 Patch 4

Protoss:

-Has been removed from the game.

BAHAHAHAHAHAH

Dude, hilarious, you put it perfectly. I get home from the movies and what do I see in the latest patch but yet another nerfing of the Protoss and more Terran buffs. WTF?

I just got in. No email notification or anything, it just appeared on my battle.net account. I'm so happy. :)

Congrats!

Yup, another wave of opt-in invites went out tonight. Everyone should log into BNet and see if they got in!
