hardware.fr just posted their 6-month update on component return rates, including SSDs. Here are the SSD results:

http://translate.googleusercontent....d.html&usg=ALkJrhhIVDNeLokpS9TLO1M4NaeN_CVQ3g

Return rates reported concerns products sold between April 1 and October 1, 2012, for returns created before April 2013, 6 months to 1 year of operation.

- Samsung 0.05% (against 0.48%)
- Plextor 0.16% (N / A)
- Intel 0.37% (against 0.45%)
- Crucial 1.12% (against 1.11%)
- Corsair 1.61% (against 1.05%)
- OCZ 6.64% (against 5.02%) / 2.92% without Petrol / Octane SATA 2 (against 3.05%)

Samsung is really looking good there. Plextor also looks good, although in the text they include the proviso that Plextor had a special deal that the M3 and M3P models could be returned directly to Plextor (if I understand it correctly, maybe a native French speaker could provide a better translation) which then would not be included in the return rates to the French retailer.

Also, preliminary results for the next 6-month period:

http://translate.googleusercontent....n.html&usg=ALkJrhhJq89Is7neY9ZCUuL4TZUNG3MAfw

Finally here for the next period covering October 2012 to April 2013 sales to products that already have a return rate more than 4% (minimum sample size of 100).
....
SSD:
4.20% 128 GB OCZ Vector
4.07% 256 GB OCZ Vector

At the launch of Vector OCZ highlighted the work done prior to the launch to ensure a high level of reliability. It has not it seems borne fruit since these SSD stand in front and with high rates for storage media even if we stay away from those records unfortunately recorded for Petrol and Octane SATA 2.

Would also be nice to see reasons for return rather than just return percentages.

People return products for a multitude of reasons, and it's a bit of a stretch to assume all of these returns are due to failure or RMA (for any of the manufacturers involved).

Also, I'm surprised to see OCZ selling so much still, considering their stigma on this forum and others. Maybe that site overprices other brands or OCZ isn't seen the same way by their customerbase?

OCZ isn't seen the same way by their customer base?
BINGO!

It's called cheap and most consumers are uneducated about SSDs.

BUT don't forget, some here still swear by 'um.

I purchased a band new set of Vertex2s when they first came out and sold them 2 days later. LOL!

hmm... does not fill me with confidence given that I recently bought a refurb OCZ SSD for the laptop. Newegg made me an offer I couldn't refuse, darn near $0.50/Gig.

Eh, I think OCZ has seen the error in their ways. The Octane and Petrol Series ROYALLY fucked them. Everything since then has had pretty good rates.

With Plextor you don't have to pay shipping to return the drive to the manufacturer, that's what the article says.

Also, returns considered are only RMAs, not change of mind.

wonder what the return rate due to firmware issues are.

Not true. The OCZ Vectors are looking to be at more than 4% return rate. Which is ironic, considering OCZ touted the Vector as having gotten extensive quality testing. I guess compared to the Petrol/Octane the Vector looks good, but compared to Samsung, Plextor, or Intel, the Vector is looking bad.

A sample size of 4 SSDs is absolutely worthless. Even worse, it is not a random sample since it is self-selected.

7 SSDs here w/ 3 of them OCZ (+ 2 adata, 2 plextor), all are working fine. Technically every sample set is ultimately self-selected.

No, certainly not. The hardware.fr study looks at every SSD from a large French retailer for which data is available. That is reasonably close to a random sample and is not self-selected.

In contrast, when you have someone posting that he has X SSDs and they all work fine (or they all failed), that is very far from a random sample. The people who had 0 failures (or all failures) are much more likely to post than the people who had a more typical result.

13/13 failures within 18 months, OCZ vertex 2 240G
Offered me a refund due to recall but never did anything after.

Keep in mind the sample pool of OCZ , I have a 128GB vector for my amd system and no issues to speak of. However next time I will be buying a Samsung SSD without question.

5 OCZ SSDs here, no problems with any of them for the past 2+ years.

I can see reading comprehension is a needed skill for many people, as well as statistics and probability.
