Sony Investigating PS4 Hardware Failures

MS should come up with a catchy name for the PS4 deaths and pay a firm to spam the shit out of the internet with their new name for it. Turn about is fair play.

Don't count your chickens 'til they hatch.

Who knows if the Xb1 will have a failure rate higher than the current 0.2% of the PS4.

In any case, the failure rate is way under the expected for electronic devices in general.

There are always bound to be a few failures with a new hardware launch. Hopefully this isn't as big an issue as people are already blowing it up to be.

FYI, .2% is a lie

So what is it then?

Its way too early in the lifecycle to even know. The original quote by sony was .04 which off by a factor of 10, and that was for pre launch only shipped units. We dont even know if all of those pre launch units have even been powered on yet.

Modern electronics have an expected 3-5% failure rate which makes sony saying .4, PR nonsense

yeh, like MS deserve to be throwing anything at anyone over the last couple of years with all the crap changes they have been doing with o I don't know, outlook, office, windows, XB1 major policy changes, last minute do overs, then deciding nah fk you and doing it anyways. Honestly so far it seems its sony that learned from last generation far more then MS has over its lifetime, and that's awesome for Sony, pathetic for MS.

If I had a unit and it "died" turning it on, well I would bring it back to futureshop or wherever I bought it and tell em what happened, this is why there is warranties, though I believe said warranties should be longer like 2 years full cover, 3 years service only.

Hell if they made these units use more off the shelf type things you might even be able to swap the case fans and such to keep it "fresh" you will want/need to dust it out at some point and they DO NOT make them in a way that it is easy to do so, they all need to smarten the fk up in this aspect, this is why I like my PC, gets dirty or breaks, take apart dust or fix.

0.2% is the current failure rate, so please tell me, how is the current failure rate a lie.

Use math.

Use math.

How is it the current failure rate? Sony themselves said .4 on the pre release consoles, which as i stated before is nothing but a PR BS number. There isnt a single electronic device on the market with below a 1% failure rate.

At the time they made the statement they had 16 reports, and people assumed roughly 4k out in the wild, and by doing simple math as you stated it. that is .4%

Btw unless there is a failure like the one on the solder of the 360, then actually early failure rate tends to be very close to actual failure rate, that is because of actual gross manufacturing defects in electronics, afterwards it will stabilize to a much smaller number until the wear and tear catches up.

This behavior is known as a Bathtub Curve due to the shape it shows (not all that inventive when they named it ;-) ) http://www.quanterion.com/FAQ/Bathtub_Curve.htm

On the other hand, seeing as on the first 3 years the 360 got a failure rate of ~54%, then yeah, they shouldn't be throwing stones.

I have only seen 8 reports, 1 of which was promptly fixed due to it being a simple bent hdmi pin, and at least one other well, the user was pretty much a retard, not following proper instructions and then taking the harddrive off while the console was on and running.

The stupid streamer who did the harddrive deal had issues while downloading a DCUO patch, alongside 2 of the other reporters, but overall it doesn't seem to be a generalized cause, unlike the RRoD which did have a general cause.

Btw the number of consoles is ~4000 from Taco Bell only, 444 from the event and how many from stands and reviewers from the event? so even with your 16 reports, 16/4500 = 0.35% => mighty fine.

Ah, the super exclusive "RAVE" edition PS4

Break out the ex, get your pacifiers ready!

In all seriousness though, if this ever approaches the RROD percentage of failed consoles, then I will proceed to give a fuck.

I know what the failure rates generally are....

The figure was for CURRENT PS4's that number is likely to go up but the statement was from the then current PS4's in the wild.

No need to lie in a post claiming the number is a lie. You're supposedly an engineer you did college level math Cmon now.

I expect some major "hack" to take down all PS4s for a few weeks.. just wasn't expecting it at launch.

I posted what the actual failure rate was, as per an official statement from sony. They themselves said it was higher than .2%. Come on now your still proving how boneheaded you really are with every single post.

And Guess what? Neogaf has been getting a flood of reported failures all day long, which as i said, proves that the .4% number sony even gave, was absolute bullshit and may be a much bigger problem than anyone wants to admit

Hopefully you're not saying all these people are "retards" too. :(

How can people check if their system is bad if the Playstation Network is down? Just saying. The same thing is probably going to happen with Microsoft next week and you know there's going to be threads for days about it.

That would depend on something Steve, did they try and take out the harddrive from the console while it was on?

I mean come on Steve, this is [H]ardOCP, how would you call someone who opens his pc while it is on and tries to take out the harddrive or the ram?

Well thays cute. Lets assume that because one person did an idiotic thing and say every console failure to date is caused by the same thing. Truth be told there are a rather high amount of failures and or faulty hdmi connectors being reported and it is a legitinate concern. The apologist is strong in you

I have never assumed anything about others, i did say that specific of the guy who did it.

Btw the console is legally out, if they sold, let's say, 100k today, there would be 400 reports, which would be more than enough to make quite some noise, no apologies there, just cold hard logic.

If you are interested to know, the XB1 will get the same pass from me on it's launch.

If the XB1 dies, customers will say say they were XBoned. That's gotta be worse than BPOD. Hell, a Blue Pulse of Death almost sounds soothing.

Somebody screwed up and the rootkit went into effect out of the box and killed it instead of 1 day past warranty like they planned.

The extent that some people go to defend Sony amazes me. You're calling your own brethren a retard :-/.

Was going to write a more extensive post but I have a lot of cad-comic to catch up on.

I heard that the batch with the the hardware revision have been popping up at gamestop. So don't buy from them or just check the serial number before.

The specific case started by pulling the cord while downloading an update.

Pulling
The
Cord

And he went down from there, not following basic instructions of "hold down the power button for X seconds", then when amazingly he half followed some instructions and unbricked it, went back to doing the same crap, bricking it again, then started taking out and putting back in the hard disk drive while the console was on.

If you think that i am defending Sony, by all means keep thinking that, but said user was a frigging retard and i am not ashamed of calling him that.

Don't forget Amazon. 579 reviews with 1 star as of now and growing.

Think it is safe to say they are showing up everywhere. Review units were failing, people that got them from taco bell and other promos were got some that failed. You have a crap shot no matter where you got it from.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but what's 5% of a million?

50,000

Assuming the historical averages of electronics are on the high end that's an ass ton of people raging on the Internet.

The launch was so large we need more specifics on how many units are affected because even with the averages the pool of people is just too large to go in noticed.

well sony has doubled their failure rate estimate ..I wonder what it will be in a few weeks.
