Sony Bash!

I wonder how long it will be before we can only play Sony movies on a Sony player plugged into a Sony TV and a Sony receiver... choose another brand and it's no movie for you. I'm sure they can come up with some proprietary form of HDCP that will make sure their dream becomes a reality. Sony FTW!

An industry using its clout to influence how events play out. I don't think Microsoft has ever done anything so terrible.

At least when they do it, it's a software choice. Software can be ...ahem... modified. Hardware? Memory sticks? Tiny "Blu" laser diodes that are blamed for high prices? Not so much.

So you're saying that Sony should have the right to tell you that you can only play your BD movie in the PS3 and not in a stand alone BD player. They own the rights and should be able to do that, right?

Flawed logic. Netflix is licensed by Sony to distribute these movies to paying customers. Why then is Sony being allowed to dictate to Netflix who is and who is not allowed to use their service? Dangerous waters, that.

You still can play Sony movies on DVD with your X360 right? You own the physical media but for digital distribution, Sony owns the right to control the distribution.

i get screwed in canada for netflix streaming anyways, so i'm happy you're all pissed off.

ha ha.

ahaha, owned. And MS would probably do the same thing if they could, dont think they wouldnt.
Sony owns.

I read some are saying the pulled movies are already available on the market place. Makes sense to me why they would get pulled from Netflix.

Sony can do what ever the hell they want to do for all I care if it is from Sony its not worth my time anyway :)

Besides if you don't like what Sony is doing just get what ever it is some "OTHER" way :p HAHA

AARRRRRRR!!! tehe

Titles available to watch instantly

Hello. Steve Swasey, here, Catherine Fisher's colleague in Corporate Communications. Following up on Catherine's post, a comment on title availability to watch instantly:

As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices. We’re doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time. In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console. Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.

Well hopefully they'll be back soon... not that I'm losing any sleep over it :)

Sony essentially sold their right of control by licensing Netflix to distribute their product through a rental service. Allowing Sony to change licensing terms midstream to dictate what, when, or to whom Netflix is allowed to distribute certain materials (in this case prohibiting Columbia movies on Xbox only) is setting a dangerous precedent. Somehow I doubt Netflix would have agreed to an exclusive with Xbox if they were in any way at risk of violating their license with Sony or any one else, so why isn't Netflix being allowed to control the distribution of the product they have been licensed to distribute? Not being a fanboy, just saying that "sword fights" and chest beating like this don't bode well for any of us.

Why? I love my PS3. There's plenty of good games and it's reliable. In general I prefer PS3 exclusives to 360 exclusives. My 360 is packed up in it's box sitting in my closet.

I think this move by Sony is funny.

I play my ps3 and wii much less than my 360, but they're still plugged into my tv...that's just wierd....

this is true ^^

if i had consoles laying about, they'd most certainly be plugged into a tv. any console.

I feel like the montecito guys must have....

OK, firstly, I think we can safely assume that this was more of a licenseing thing and not a being a 'dick' thing. The issue is that if Sony does anything (except PS3 hardware) including the licencing of movies, they do so for profit, so there is at least some margin on it for them. Thus, they probably would want the movies to be shown in as many 'legit' places as possible including people with xboxes.

Secondly, to the assertion that MS would behave the same, I call bullshit. MS has really been a veritable ANGEL when it comes to playing nice in the proverbial sand box. They have committed to supporting open standards, they have published their own specs so that people can support theirs. Their software runs well on competing platforms and they remain really dedicated toward making everyday computing and gaming a better experience.

I look at the 360 and the PS3 and it's funny...I spend a lot more time on my 360 (games, media center extender, dvds) than I do on my ps3. With the exception of MGS4, the PS3 has just not really compelled me to take it serious as a unique platform.

Though the PS3 supposedly outclasses the 360 in hardware, what gaming is really all about is the software. And MS is a software company, sony is not. MS understands online connected content and community, sony does not. MS understands the importance of easy/contracted development cycles, sony does not.

The point of all this is that unless sony really pulls off a miracle with this PS home thing....I think MS will really continue to dominate the online space. Sony will definately support it with their media to the extent that it's profitable.

Well stated, I agree 100%

I think this is a fantastic move, especially if intentionally a big fuck you to Microsoft.
All M$ is buy up everything and make it their own. I'm getting sick of them just throwing money at everything they want and getting it. I'd like for a company once to say "fuck you, keep your money, we're doing what we want."

Amen! I'd much rather support Sony because they're not evil at all!

Seriously, though, why would anyone root for consumers to get screwed over? Is Microsoft so offensive to you that you think anyone who owns a 360 deserves it? If so, how many other unsavory companies do you boycott?

Sorry if I hate Microsoft and their business practices.

And most 360 people seem to be smug bastards. Shrug.

Never said I loved Sony or anything.

Consumers get screwed most of the time anyway, not much you can do about it.

Exactly. It doesn't matter... 360 users... PS3 users... Apple users... Linux users! It doesn't matter, there are a-holes in every "camp." :)

If Sony "really" wanted to make it so that you could only play certain blu-ray films on their PS3, they're entitled to do it. They probably wouldn't call it blu-ray, they'd call it something else. There is absolutely nothing that says a product released must be playable on other competitor platforms. Did you ever see those little pokemon videos they had for the gameboy? Or the movies they have out for the PSP? They never stopped releasing the movies on DVD when Blu-Ray was trying to be introduced to the market, they had them both out at the same time. Same with VHS when DVD was new.
It would also be suicide to do so. They would have to have a new format specifically for PS3, which would be something completely different from Blu-Ray, would lose out on thousands of sales, customers would be unhappy, and revenue would plummet.

Whenever sony can print money.

Anytime any company makes something proprietary, they have 2 options: market dominance of a format, or forcing consumers into using "top of the line" peripherals that only work with their top of the line gadgets. So youre forced into something that matches your expensive gadget... big whoop. You have the money spend it. Sony knows they are considered high end and people who either want to think that they are high end or are high end will buy it. Who buys vaio's when most people know that you can get the same specs + more features with other company laptops.

I love my ps3 because it matches my home theater system and doesn't crank out noises when operating normally (working with a 1st gen 360). Its also nice to have only two things in my cabinet.. a receiver and an all in one home theater package.

Meh, I don't think it's quite the same thing, since you're just comparing mediums against OTHER mediums. Of course it's no big deal when you have say a movie on a UMD, for the PSP, and they're still being made on DVD, and so on. However, we're not talking about comparing mediums. We're talking about comparing different devices that use that same medium.

What if there were other UMD movie players out, that were popular, and Sony suddenly said "Alright, our UMD movies, which could play on all UMD devices before, are suddenly only able to play on the PSP." What if Sony was suddenly able to prevent playback of their DVDs on a non Sony DVD player. Or lill Blu-ray movies from playing on a non Sony BR player?

The only issue, should Columbia Pictures never allow their films on the 360 again (I don't see it happening anyway), is that even though these movies are on numerous mediums, and formats, the DIGITAL DOWNLOAD medium is available on numerous devices, from NetFlix's PC software, the NetFlix set-top boxes, etc., but not the Xbox. This also isn't the same as say an iTunes DRM song or movie not being able to work in the Zune Marketplace, as those are completely different services. The NetFlix service is ONE service, which offers a few different ways of taking advantage of it.

Then it's licensing issues. Since the media is going through an intermediary, netflix, then sony needs to make sure it agrees with what is going on with their property. Since the media was not sold to netflix, and is only licensed to them, there needs to be an agreement with how it is distributed.
I think the problem is you think Netflix owns all these titles, as if they were a physical piece of property such as their DVDs, which is not the case. It's completly different, with licensing there is a whole new set of rules and you can't just do with it what you want.
Netflix is the one boasting that its service is playable on xbox. If sony doesn't have a contract that states "You can do whatever you want with all the titles in our library", then there's limitations and apparently there is an issue with xbox licensing.
I'm not saying that they'll never allow xbox support, i'm saying that they're just playing politics. This wasn't in my contract, give me more money if you want to boast this service to your fans.

roflmao.....owned, thats all i can say, after all this is just business, microsoft would do the same thing if they were on sony's position, remember all the charges they have for monopoly......

I don't know if you're talking to me or not, but believe me, I know the difference, and yes, this is a licensing issue. Hell, I'm the one who posted the NetFlix response, stating they're working on getting the licensing agreement, and hoping to have the movies back up ON the 360!

I'm just providing an argument to the people who think that somehow restricting content, on a particular medium, on one specific device that it has been available on, as well as on similar devices, from the SAME service provider, is a good thing. I really don't think it is.

Hey, again... you'll get no argument from me. My previous comments have nothing to do with arguing that NetFlix should be able to do whatever they want with movie content they've licensed. We don't know the whole story, and I'm sure none of us know what kind of licensing agreement NetFlix has. I just didn't feel the DVD vs. UMD vs. Game Boy videos talk was relavent to what this thread issue is about... and I stick by that, as that was just videos on different mediums, and NOT videos the same medium, on different devices.

Either way I expect this issue to be resolved, and Columbia Pictures' movies will be back on the NetFlix section, on the 360, in no time. I believe it has even been said from another source that movies from the Xbox Live Video Marketplace had not been pulled, so those were safe, considering they have nothing to do with the NetFlix licensing. Assuming I read correctly, and that Sony/Columbia Pictures' movies are in the Live Marketplace (I rarely look so I don't know).

This reminds me of how my Hotmail works in every browser except...chrome.

I think for the most part this was a good thing for net flix viewers because the large majority of sony movies BLOW ASS.

I'm sorry but I do think this is funny as hell, and some of you really need to stop and think about this, that Sony and MS are out to make money period. Do some of you actually think if MS owned a large movie studio they would allow their movie's to be streamed to the PS3? no fucking way in hell. Granted Sony are bad about their proprietary shit but come on, no one can be that damn blind.

MS has always been about the cash, not the consumer.

And let's not forget how several cross platform titles have magically appeared on the 360 1st and a few weeks or several months later they arrive on PS3, Rockband 2 anyone? But I'm sure MS did this for the greater of all gamers:rolleyes:

It's just business, period.
And if you think for a second MS wouldn't do this in a heartbeat if they had the opportunity, your a fool.

Unfortunately, MS does not own a movie company. I don't see them not allowing it though. That is to say, that it could, but who knows since we won't see it. I mean they allow Sony to have the OS. Of course, after Sony did this, no doubt MS would come back with just the same or even harder, and then the PS3 owner would suffer in result.

In any case, I think this was a low blow.

So I guess that means it will be ok if MS prevents Sony Vaio PC's from installing Windows.

This is not only a low blow by Sony, it will actually hurt them in the long run as a PR nightmare. The consumer will dislike Sony even more than they already do.

Are ppl not getting that these films are coming out, it is just licensing issues

This has already been posted a page or so back.

A delay can be pretty fatal, as the 360 sort of proved when it came out before the ps3. I never believed that it won't ever come out.

Licensing issues are a bitch, just gotta live with it. The US PSN store has had movies for friggin ages now, EU doesn't get them because....you guessed it....licensing issues.

I wish a delayed set of movies was the only thing I could bitch over!
