Socket AM3+ is DEAD

I am not sure if I am understanding what I am reading in this thread correctly. Could someone please elaborate further on a couple of points for me (and others) who are on the fence?

I was under the impression that the FM2 socket CPUs were below performance compared to the AM3+ socket CPUs. I also made the assumption that the Steamroller processor(s) would have noticeable performance gains over the Piledriver processors. According to most review sites, the new FM2+ CPUs will be the only Steamroller based processors due in the future.

If all the above is correct, does that mean that these new FM2+ processors will perform better than the current AM3+ counterparts? Is that what all the speculation in this thread about?

@MrGuvernment: AM3+ is most likely dead. There's currently no indications that it will receive more processors in the future. We will have to wait and see the new roadmaps that will be released in October/November this year to see what lies ahead (if anything) for AM3+.

@rene mauricio: FM2 Piledrivers generally perform the same clock-for-clock as their AM3+ Piledriver parts do, with the same number of cores. A Vishera hexacore or octocore would obviously pull ahead in multi-threaded workloads, but besides that the performance is the same.

Yep, it's looking like Steamroller parts will only come to FM2+, there's no official confirmation SR isn't coming to AM3+, but right now we just don't know.

Steamroller (FM2+ Kaveri) will indeed perform better clock-for-clock than Piledriver.

At worst there'll probably be a Piledriver refresh on AM3+, so both they are the platform will be around for a while longer. Of course no one knows for certain what's going to happen. Everyone has taken the server road map released last summer and ran with it assuming desktop must follow suit.

I see. The dilemma I have now is that I would like to pass along my 3570k build on to a friend and get something new to tinker with for myself. I would love a AM3+ build but (as far as I can tell) no one has put out any quality 990FX mATX boards where some nice FM2+ ones look to be coming out shortly.

:-/

Good to know, it seems i have all mr rigs sold, i hope, so i will be in a rush to get a rig...

This is a bit is appointing.

8 core FX on AM3+ has been a perfect home server platform. Unfortunately home servers are probably a small enough market that they can't keep FX alive.

I have a Bulldozer (FX-8120) at stock speeds in my virtualization server in my basement, and it has served admirably. The 8 core design has been perfect for this application.

I love the fact that it is not bundled with a GPU, as I can just stick my old 2MB Matrox Millenium VGA card in a PCI slot and not worry about power consumption or anything like that. The screen only ever displays text modes anyway.

I wouldn't mind a little more power, and a little less power usage though. Been considering trying to eBay one of those 95W FX-8300's from South Korea to accomplish this, but what will I do in the next gen?

Maybe I'll have to start buying ACTUAL server hardware, which would be a bummer, as it is more expensive, and for some reason server motherboards tend to have very very few expansion slots, and I use a lot of PCIe and PCI slots on my servers.

It's too bad.

You said it yourself :) If they can produce a CPU under 100 Watt why would AMD not make them for FM2+ platform.

Next year AMD are releasing some new chips for socket G34, these chips are not Steamroller but instead an upgraded more power efficient version of piledriver.

So we know they can make Piledriver chips use less power whilst running at the same speed.

I think with steamroller they will be able to make chips the same speed as the 8250 run under 100 watt, so we may see some nice chips on FM2+

I wont be upset if there is no more cpu's for am3+. I just want a 8 core or more cpu on fm2+ with a good board. does not make since to drop the 8 core support on fm2 for just 4 core

You probably won't ever see a 8 core CPU on FM2+. That is part of the reason why others are upset about AM3+ being dead.

Exactly, which I was I hope it is not dead yet. (I have not seen anybody from AMD come out and specifically say it one way or the other yet.) I did not miss something, did I?

Super disappointed there is no AM3+ steamroller CPU. Looks like Intel is the only option now. So long AMD...it was a good ride while it lasted...

Proof? Did I miss a quote from AMD saying this is so? I am not being sarcastic but serious.

There is no proof, but, the thing is, in these cases, no news is bad news... When you see AMD being quite informative about Kaveri, but doesn't say anything about Steamroller in AM3+, it is worrisome.

And at any case, it is bad policy on AMD's part. I mean, if they really intend to release Steamroller for AM3+ and they keep it hush hush, it's bad for them. They 're losing customers to Intel.

That is why they ditched AM3+ because they were tired of losing customers now they are all gone they don't have to worry about them ;)

FFS they can't say anything as they haven't finished the Arch yet, they don't know what TDP it will be.

They aren't saying anything as their is nothing to say.

Pardon the ignorance, i am not too techie. Not knowing the TDP is impeding them to leak something like "Steamroller will come on AM3+ as promiced, no worries"?

Internet fora are boiling for some months now with angry/disappointed AMD users and doubt about the feasibility of Steamroller in AM3+ sockets.

They need to have proper figures before they can decide on what sockets to support.

AMD have the luxury of being able to run the same chip on multiple sockets thanks to HT so the decision on what socket to use will come once the arch has been finalised.

They also have DDR4 and their new socket coming out 2014/2015

I see now. But, shouldn't this have been an issue, BEFORE promicing supporting AM3+? I mean, in the past they had officially said that Steamroller will come out in AM3+. So it's not like asking them to change their mind. It's natural to want some kind of confirmation or otherwise, inform people that now the fate is uncertain. That's all.

I don't expect a company that is undecisive to announce something. But i do expect a company that has "commited" to a thing to inform if this commitment is now in doubt.

There won't be a new socket in 2014/2015. FM2+ is the last socket until whatever comes after Excavator (Carrizo APU will be a drop-in to FM2+), and we have literally no idea what AMD plans are past that. DDR4 won't require a new socket, just new MOBO's for people who wish to use DDR4 memory with their (presumably) Carrizo APU's or even a Kaveri refresh depending on when they decide to implement DDR4 IMC.

Steamroller as a microarch is pretty much done. The thing is, that leaked die shot from a while back that showed a Piledriver module on the left, and an unidentified module on the right, seems to lead towards thoughts that there was a Steamroller v2 done at some point, which could explain the original delay (Kaveri was supposed to launch in Q1 2013 in the original timeframe).

When it comes to AM3+ SR, these are the possibilities:

1) AMD is simply being really tight-lipped because they want to reveal the release of SR FX in a formal announcement (meh)

2) AMD will do a SR FX in Q3 or Q4 2014 because the previous FX chips were all adopted from the Opteron chips, and since there hasn't been a native octocore Opteron design CPU-only part with the Steamroller uarch detailed yet, AMD would replace their newer server refreshed Piledriver+ chip with a Steamroller-based one in Q2/Q3 2014 and then follow suit with the desktop FX offering. (possible)

3) FX-9000 really was the last of the FX chips and socket AM3+ is dead forever, and at most there would be another Piledriver refresh with some of those "Enhanced Piledriver" cores from the newer server variant released. (Possible on the earlier statement, dunno about the latter one)

However, a poster over at OCN named os2wiz (he came over here and clarified once before) spoke directly with an AMD employee about Socket AM3+ and was told that the socket would receive at least one further offering, and that Socket AM3+ would be supported for 'years to come'. Now this was after the Centurions were released IIRC, so it's not very likely that the AMD guy was talking about those. He was also told to wait for the newer roadmaps to release, which will be released late October or sometime in November around the APU '13 event.

^This ..until then..Kaveri FM2+ will be it :(
If it looks good..I'm getting one :D
1st thing I wanna see is SuperPi :p

Yeah why not go for broke on an ancient x87 coded benchmark in a new chip where parallel optimizations are key :) .

The story that I heard could be lower power Piledriver. Are they so stuck on all of the activities that at AMD they choose to ignore the desktop cpu , weren't they committed to keeping that one alive?

I hope it wasn't the two 9xxx cpu that came out.

Lower power Piledriver? AMD did (very quietly) release a couple 45W versions of Piledriver APU's for desktops not too long ago, so that was probably it.

If AMD thinks these low powered Piledriver chips are worth a whole new Opteron refresh in 2014 then I think we will see some new desktop chips too.
