So, what's next after i7?

I haven't bought into i7 yet as it would do me absolutely no good at this point over my current setup. However, I'm sure I'll bite when the next stepping or process comes out. When is that supposed to happen? And is it 32nm? This time next year? Sooner? Roadmap anyone?

Just my opinion: I think i7 is a joke. I will wait for usb 3.0, pci- 3.0, and SSD'S TO realy get going. I have been running 2-3.0ghz now for 2 years socket 771 and see no reason to up my game machine yet. Right now too many new things comming out this summer.

i7 thinks your CPU is a joke...

Isn't Intel's tick-tock plan pretty well known by now? A year from now, expect 32 nm; a year after that, expect a new architecture, etc. If you want more detail, codenames, etc., the wikipedia usually has good information.

H2'09 - Lynnfied (mainstream, quad) <-- the next major mainstream chip
H2'09 - Havendale (mainstream, dual, onboard GPU)
H2'09 - Clarksfield (quad, quad)
Q4'09-H1'10 Westmere (45nm shrink of bloomfield, the current i7) <-- the next major high end chip
Q1'10 - Auburndale (mobile, dual, onboard GPU) <-- the next major mobile chip

We expect westmere to run on LGA1366, Lynnfield/Havendale will run on LGA1156, and Clarksfield/Aurburndale to run on mPGA989.

6 core i7 w/HT  Didn't think I'd ever see the day with 12 logical cores in my task manager, on a desktop.

While I can't say I think the i7 is a joke I agree that usb 3.0 could be huge. I also agree that holding off on upgrading to i7 from my current setup, Q6600, is not warranted. I plan on waiting for the board manufacturers to get all the kinks out of the new boards and the i7 to mature just a little before taking the plunge. Depending, I may wait for the 32nm chips.

Core 3 duo sounds hella stupid. I've considered it, made threads about it, but I don't think I will upgrade to i7 anytime soon. Once P55 and/or i7 processors/motherboard prices drop below $400 for both.

With some deal hunting, you can get an x58 for 150 and a 920 for 260, which is just over 400.

I'm likely to stick with my Q6600 until the next architecture, myself - Sandy Bridge is due out in 2010, and for my purposes an overclocked Q6600 should be fine till then. Core i7 seems to be too much upheaval for little real-world performance benefit for me (not necessarily for others, since it does some tasks much better).

i7 is too costly for me so I will stay with my E8400.Sure I can gain more performance with a quad or a
i7 cpu but I dont need it.All I do is play games and websurf so I dont need the super duper rendering power that some of you need.

I will say tho the i7 sli performance looked amazing,it is just to expensive for me to do tho

Memory is a killer though. You can get 4GB of DDR2 for as low as $9 (Hot Deals section this week), while 6GB of DDR3 is $185+. That was what kept me on my Q6600 for the time being.

I'd go q9xxx series cpu if i7 is too expensive. Can you swing that?

I can swing an i7 if I really wanted to, but price/performance really doesn't make sense for me. If I get a good deal on a Q9X50, I'll probably move to that. I ended up getting a used Lenovo X61 with Penryn off ebay instead of an i7 system and just kept my Q6600 ;).

The q6xxx and the q9xxx are very close performance wise A slight ipc advantage for the q9xxx. sse Probably best price/performance right now. 8 vs 12MB cache, sse 4.1, 1066 to 1333 FSB stock,- not like that matters since these cpu's should be overclocked anyway.

$185 <-> $270 = $85. That's the price difference.

It's all good for those with Yorkfield like mine, going from qx9650 to i7 won't see any noticeable performance increase "besides bechmarks" For now my qx9650 runs like a champ till 2010

You call encoding a "benchmark"?
You call 3D rendering a "benchmark"?

Yet another person keeping a Q6600... The price of DDR3, plus the fact that I don't see the need to upgrade due to what I use my computer for performing acceptably on current hardware, prevented me from giving i7 more than a passing look.

I know it's faster, but to me it's not worth it. Doesn't mean it's not worth it for other people, but it's certainly not worth it for me. Q6600 @ 3.2GHz kicks plenty of ass, thanks!

The overall expense of the platform is way to high for my budget right now...

Motherboards that run $300 are insane. Add to that the DDR3 RAM is expensive too.

None of the GPU-encoding apps I have seen are highgrade..or highquality..what app do you use?

I use Badaboom Pro for video. Along with AnyDVD, I can convert a DVD to iPhone in about 30 minutes on my 8800gt. The Pro version is a bit pricey, but has lots of extra options.

Ah..I am talking about encoding in QUALITY, not downgrading a video ;)

it supports anything between 320*240 to 1920*1080.

as with digital cameras, resolution doesnt equal quality

but i dont know the specifics of badaboom, it could be really good.

I have personally found it to be much higher quality video than the free iPhone converters, although I am by no means an expert

intel probably won't go past quad core
Everything will linger on highly OCadble smaller architecture quad cores because programs will not be able to use the extra cores. The chips will shrink and eventually laptop and desktop processors will be the same with this methood.

PS- i7 is not amazing in terms of specs but the potential with OC makes it incredible.
