So my Samsung SSD caught fire

So while i was sleeping my computer decided to catch fire. i ripped it out of the wall and put it in the sink and inspected the damage. Entire SSD had caught fire, then melted the plastic mounts on all my hardrives. 6 hardrives melted, case destroyed, all psu connectors melted. Also probably a few billion brain cells inhaling all that melted plastic

Warning, terrible quality flip phone images will follow.

Putting an electrical fire in the sink...you don't have any fire safety training do ya?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say he unplugged it first.

Didn't you know, electricity is made out of thin air! Also, you don't have a 50 foot power cable, just in case you need to throw the PC in a sink? :p

Yes the pc was unplugged, i grabbed the flaming rig from the wall and took it into the kitchen. Who the hell has a sink in there bedroom really? As for the PSU i did plug it in and tested whatever connectors were left with a multi meter, as well as the internals. All looked normal. Mobo and video card work gave me a post screen so i'll keep them. Even the internals of the psu looked just good as new, no burn marks inside, no bulged caps, voltages seemed normal. Cables used came from the manufacturers and not some random seller on ebay. I had to toss the case and psu and all the cables because the smell was way too horrid.

I don't blame the SSD it just so happened it looks like it started with that. Could of been anything, psu, power surge, i just thought it was worth uploading. The low res flipphone doesn't give justice to the damage done.

Wow, did you have this connected straight into the wall or through a surge protector?

Hrmm, well I'm no electrical engineer, so no idea how that could've happened at all beyond the PSU malfunctioning or dust piling up and catching fire.

Hope you kept the receipts on everything, since APC usually covers damage to connected electronics up to a certain value.

I'd like to thank this thread for reminding me that I hadn't ordered the fire extinguishers I'd been telling myself I needed and actually getting to order them.

Leaves me uneasy leaving my home server on 24/7 when I'm away.

I've had a SATA power connector go up in smoke on a new build.
Everything was fine after using another power connector and the machine is still running fine 3.5 years later.

It appears some power connectors can short connections together.
Whether due to bad fitting or bad design I dont know.
I've read others have had the same thing happen.

Wow, poor computer.
At least the motherboard/cpu and graphics card are still good.

It's possible for electronic components in the SSD to short out. Not common, but certainly possible. And depending on which component, it could definitely cause very high current consumption. As others have implied it is also possible the PSU overvolted it, but if it overvolted that bad, you'd probably have damage on most of your parts, not just a fire starting from one part.

Haha, was it 1 day after the warranty expired? Samsung's taking this planned obsolescence thing down to the next level.

Sounds to me like the SATA connector or the SSD itself shorted out.

I am thinking it was probably the SATA connector since it was a Hiper. Probably had an iffy connection... got the connector warm enough for the plastic on the connector to become soft and then the connections shorted, causing the fire.

I agree with the diagnosis, but it wasnt the Op that had a Hiper, I was responding to his question :)

The hiper was the other guys smoking rig that was posted above. I HAD an antec neo eco 620, which is just a rebrand SeaSonic S12II. Also i never had any of those molex to sata connectors in my rig. I wouldn't trust a 2 dollar peice of plastic and wire to power something that cost me over 100 bucks.

I am the guy with the Hiper, nobody else has mentioned Hiper.
The SATA connector that went up in smoke was directly attached to the PSU, it wasnt on an extender.

It was a Hiper.
They folded a while back.

He found the invoice and has now confirmed it to be a
CIT 550W PSU
I suppose that spells out how cheap PSUs can be dangerous!
Sad he was being a cheap skate, but he didnt deserve it going up in smoke.

Astronomica, what PSU was yours?

I wont cheap out on the PSU for any build I am responsible for.
I am using a Corsair AX750 and its been flawless for nearly 3.5 years so far, running 24/7.

This kind of thing makes you wonder why nobody has ever developed an internal smoke detector.

Rebuilt PC from my finally delivered newegg shit, smoke detector very nearby. Very paranoid now.
