So yeah, since BF3's release, every Wednesday has been 'BF Night' for me and mates.
However, it didn't go down well from the start. Game was just frustrating, and the sense of teamplay and fun almost completely absent behind the fundamentally irritating gameplay. You never feel in control in this game; always as if you're 2 seconds behind the 'real game'.
Don't get me wrong; BF3 is an immensely detailed game, with some very clever and great improvements to the genre. Unfortunately, its actual core gameplay is ropey and laggy as all fuck and ultimately not enjoyable to play. Pretty much every thing you do sets you up to get shot without being in a position to fire back. Even just walking over some debris will cause your player to lag about until you're on a proper 'spot'. And anything over a foot in height presents a MAJOR hurdle to leap over. I could go on and on about the crappy feel of the game but ultimately, I'll just finish with saying the overall experience has just not been fun. It has its moments, but few and far between.
Modern Warfare 3, however, the dark side, has been nothing but fun from the get go. And I can tell you PRECISELY why I personally love it so much over BF and it comes down to one thing:
Instant respawn.
Unlike BF3 I don't have to sit and wait a full harrowingly annoying quarter of a minute where I can't even change game settings, let alone use this as the perfect time to change my loadout etc. Instead I can spawn instantly, rather than sit there and spend 15 seconds watching the lame dumbass who luckily killed me because I was reloading/crouching/running/putting pack down/anything. So *NICE* after being killed to just respawn and be right back in the action with no bullshit to face. No fear of being revived in a bad spot by a medic whore and having to wait even longer with no control over anything. BF is just badly designed. Schneiderman's HCI Golden rule number 7: Support internal locus of control. i.e. the user should be in control, or feel in control 100% of the time. When you can't even escape out of the game for 15 seconds because you're dead, it's pretty fucking irritating. And that's BF3 through and through: irritating. I've yet to walk away from a BF3 session feeling exhilerated. It's just irritation. I remember feeling frustrated at how laggy BC2 was compared to BF2 when it came out, but BC2 compared to BF3 is like lightning!
So yeah, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd abandon the hardcore PC BF in favour of console trash like MW, but I have to admit, it's just a better game. Game's are intended to be fun. BF takes itself far too seriously and suffers as a result.
