So, my gang's 'BF Night' has turned into 'MW Night', and we're not looking back

So yeah, since BF3's release, every Wednesday has been 'BF Night' for me and mates.

However, it didn't go down well from the start. Game was just frustrating, and the sense of teamplay and fun almost completely absent behind the fundamentally irritating gameplay. You never feel in control in this game; always as if you're 2 seconds behind the 'real game'.

Don't get me wrong; BF3 is an immensely detailed game, with some very clever and great improvements to the genre. Unfortunately, its actual core gameplay is ropey and laggy as all fuck and ultimately not enjoyable to play. Pretty much every thing you do sets you up to get shot without being in a position to fire back. Even just walking over some debris will cause your player to lag about until you're on a proper 'spot'. And anything over a foot in height presents a MAJOR hurdle to leap over. I could go on and on about the crappy feel of the game but ultimately, I'll just finish with saying the overall experience has just not been fun. It has its moments, but few and far between.

Modern Warfare 3, however, the dark side, has been nothing but fun from the get go. And I can tell you PRECISELY why I personally love it so much over BF and it comes down to one thing:

    Instant respawn.

Unlike BF3 I don't have to sit and wait a full harrowingly annoying quarter of a minute where I can't even change game settings, let alone use this as the perfect time to change my loadout etc. Instead I can spawn instantly, rather than sit there and spend 15 seconds watching the lame dumbass who luckily killed me because I was reloading/crouching/running/putting pack down/anything. So *NICE* after being killed to just respawn and be right back in the action with no bullshit to face. No fear of being revived in a bad spot by a medic whore and having to wait even longer with no control over anything. BF is just badly designed. Schneiderman's HCI Golden rule number 7: Support internal locus of control. i.e. the user should be in control, or feel in control 100% of the time. When you can't even escape out of the game for 15 seconds because you're dead, it's pretty fucking irritating. And that's BF3 through and through: irritating. I've yet to walk away from a BF3 session feeling exhilerated. It's just irritation. I remember feeling frustrated at how laggy BC2 was compared to BF2 when it came out, but BC2 compared to BF3 is like lightning!

So yeah, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd abandon the hardcore PC BF in favour of console trash like MW, but I have to admit, it's just a better game. Game's are intended to be fun. BF takes itself far too seriously and suffers as a result.

If you want run and gun instant respawn game, then CoD is your game, not BF ... or CS(Unless GG), or a slew of other games. I don't really know what you are talking about as far as the walking and lag you speak of, it is perfectly fine for me, but not having instant respawns does not make BF3 a bad game, it just makes it 'not your game'.

Whatever makes you happy. I will say that your style of gameplay is not one that works well for BF. So you are better off with the arcade, instant respawn style.

FYI some BF servers have that instant respawn with maps like metro and team or squad deathmatch which would probably be more fun for your group.

after your well-worded intro i figured you'd come to a conclusion more significant than the respawn time. i get it- the respawn time takes you out of the action, but it's not something i'd oust a game for. i agree with sethmo in saying:

on the broader topic, i'm surprised your group has gone to MW3 considering you don't like BF3's ropey/laggy feel. Black Ops feels much more crisp and responsive than MW3 due to dedicated servers vs P2P. i'm a fan of both the BF and COD series, but MW3 doesn't do it for me. I'd rather just play Black Ops but i suppose the small player-base would be a problem for your group. i think BF3 is the best FPS game to date, but we all have our preferences.

You can't play this game because it takes 10 seconds to respawn?

I actually don't mind a little "penalty" for getting killed. You're dead after all. 15 seconds in time out isn't an unreasonable penalty for it. I never really liked the idea that I could work to kill you and you'd instantly pop back up. Especially if you're playing in teams. You take out one of your opponents teammates, you've got a 15 window where the odds are on your side.

I hate the idea of instant respawns! What's the point of checking corners and being tactful and stealthy when you're constantly getting spawned behind. It's so awesome getting knifed from behind by the asshole you just killed 3 seconds ago because he knows exactly where you are.

Right. Its kinda like quick save in single player games. Yeah it gets frustrating having to go thru the same stuff again because you got killed but it adds to the suspense or whatever not being able to quick save right before a tricky part and if you screw up, well no big deal cause I can just start again right where I was.

I kind of sympathize in some ways, I get irritated very quickly with not feeling like I'm in control, stuff like locking out the menu and kit selection and whatnot when you're dead is a massive no-no in my books, also having elements of the battlefield which impede player movement is a massive failure on the developers part. While I didn't try much of BF3 other than the beta, I did see my brother playing and a lot of these movement issues crop up, even with a fast PC and large amount of bandwidth.

However CoD:MW I do not see as much of an acceptable replacement, while BF3 has its flaws I would never backpedal to MW, in fact I'm mighty tempted to get back in to BFBC2 which was IMO a bit of a diamond in the rough, not without its faults but fundamentally playable in ways which BF3 isn't and without the lame crap of the MW multiplayer which seems like console kiddy 13 year old ADHD ridden.

The other players would have the same lag and problems your team does so the playing fields should be equal.

I find those two statements quite funny in relation to each other.

Often, the only team play you get in the game is when a person is playing medic and trying to revive team mates in order to get points. Is it truly altruistic team play, no. However, it's often the best there is.

I say play whatever makes you happy. I think BF3 is a superior game but I can see why a group of gamers might switch to MW3 for its more arcade style shooting.

    Enjoy.

ZOMG 15 sec I can feel my self growing older every time I wait to respawn.

I dont even play on bf3 servers that have instant vehicle respawns since its too anoying.
Whats the point of killing some one or some thing if it doesnt help out your team by depriving the other team of resources, even if its only for a short period of time.

I am thinking this is a rather well done troll thread.

It would be kinda hard to be successful in a game mode like Rush where you have to kill guys to be able to gain time to push forward if everyone just instantly respawned.

Well which is it? Ass, or generally inside him? Getting specific about where the door is inside of him is important. And why is the door on the way out? Will he be poo'ing it out, or?

I agree that the gameplay in BF3 is far from ideal for a BF series game. Its fucked up to say the least.Dice /EA in their to bring new juice into the series ruined the actual Teamplay .

But that's not a valid reason to jump to MW series. I cant stand that kind of multiplayer for a second. Good luck though. Ultimately everyone games for fun. Choose what fits your bill.It doesn't make you any less of a gamer, just a different one.:)

ehh... he has a point though. In a good Battlefield game, you should be able to change your class and spawn point while dead.

Jesus christ, Would you just look at all the BF fanbois.

I've played and owned every game in the battlefield franchise...BF3/BC2.1/BC2 is a step back.

Funny that he went to MW though, they are basically both TDMs now with no one working as an actual team (BRO MY K/D RATIO IS X/X!)

The above made me quit and uninstall BF3. Fuck DICE, fuck EA. You (EA) screwed up two perfectly good franchises (BF and ME) for me in the span of less than 6 months.

Games with instant respawns tend to appeal to the derps. Not to say BF3 doesn't have its derps, it's pretty much as derpy as Derpin' Warfare 3. But the fact is respawn timers generally encourage a more careful & tactical player. Even if it's as short as in BF3s. I really enjoyed Search & Destroy in MW2 and I tend to enjoy CS-style games in which you get 1 life per round. For me these, tend to be the thinkin' man's FPS.

Frankly, MW3 to me was too much. Spawn, kill someone. Maybe two people. Someone spawns behind you. DIE.

    Respawn, HELICOPTER YOU DIE.

Respawn, kill a few people, nade lands next to you. DIE.

The game was really just a complete....clusterfuck. I ran screaming from it back to BF3.

The maps and game modes & mechanics are pretty much designed to minimize individual skill and just make everyone able to kill everyone else at least some of the time. If you wanted to escape this you should have tried Search and Destroy if MW3 still has this, never bought it.

    pretty much.

You have to venture outside TDM if you want to play any kind of teamwork based games (unless you're playing with a bunch of people you know). And even then, it can be hit or miss.

Nothing is more frustrating than playing domination (for example) with half the team camping instead of going for the flag/points (although, thats not something that's just limited to COD). Then they wonder why they have the lowest score on the board with 23:1 k-d, yet a guy with a measly 5 kills and 15 deaths is leading it.

Right now BF3 is my fav game. I know it's not perfect, but I think it is a good balance between realism/arcade play. Anyone who thinks otherwise should really play COD a bit more. I've been playing BF3 since it was released and played some COD the other day and I MUCH prefer BF3, even in a TDM setting. And BF3 does require good teamplay if you want to win the objective based games.

BF3's coop is great fun, I have to admit. Easily enjoyed that the most.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying BF3 is bad per se, just that ultimately, I never walk away from it with a good feeling. It's more relief.

And whilst I aint pro, I'm not shit at it either... :p
    [IMG]

So far I've only played MW3's domination (traditional BF style flag capping) so can't speak for any of the other modes.

Seems to me that BF has gone too far to satisfy the console CoD crowd, trying to make a halfway house between BF and CoD, and missing both.

Never heard of an instant spawn server?

BTW, I'm not surprised that MW3 feels more polished. BF3 is a beta of what EA wants to be their COD-BF hybrid vehicle. Whereas, MW3 is the fifth installment of the same game. If you can't nail it by #3, #4, or #5 you have no business making games.

S&D is the only mode I liked, when teams were balanced. It was all too often 4v3 or something, with two destroy points. I was usually the last person standing and won a fair amount of time, but it was still too annoying given MW3's mechanics.

I think there's a lot of reasons one might want to play COD over BF.... instant respawn isn't one I was thinking of though :p

Personally a lot of the COD I played was on servers with respawn timers anyway. One of my favourite game modes was always S&D where you'd have to wait for the round to end before you could respawn.

A played TONS on America's Army back in the day, and got VERY used to sitting there watching the round finish after I died. Which meant it was time to get a drink and snacks. Or use the head.

This was the reason I stopped playing America's Army. I hated waiting so long for matches to end. I don't mind waiting a bit but waiting 10 minutes and watching others slowly creep around so they don't get sniped out of nowhere I felt was boring as shit.

I understand that AA was going for realism but realism is boring. I've hunted since I was a kid and its 99 percent waiting and 1 percent killing. Its great and all but for a video game I want something that keeps me excited and in the game.
