Skyrim Modding Megathread

I'm really liking the 1.6.89 CK. It even remembers the last directory when searching for nif files! May not sound like much but it is a huge time saver when creating new objects that use nifs in the same directory (like Trollf's paintings resource). Previously it would always reset to the mesh folder.

And Skyrim is so enjoyable now that it doesn't crash every 5-30 minutes.

I think I found the source of my crashing: ugrids set to 7. That or a few mods that I've removed though it seems unlikely those would have been causing it.

Definitely not worth it. These games are so bitchy. It doesn't matter how awesome someone's hardware is.

I was going to try the perk overhaul component of it but never got around to it.

Alrighty, I need some ideas from you guys.

I finally found a combination of a few mods that make fighting seem much more fast, brutal, and strategic. (I can't remember the names atm though)

One just alters the battle scripts and makes enemies more strategic, rewards timely blocks and attacks, and punishes turtles. Another mod doubled damage dealt and received.

As you can imagine, fights are quick, brutal and feel much better now. You have to plan fights that you can see coming, and ambushes are often very deadly now. In fact I'm usually dead before I know what is going on. The problem is fights are over so quick that, I'm not getting to swing my sword enough to level it. So leveling has become painfully slow.

Any ideas?

You can use Uncapper and set it to give you a higher leveling rate for your 1H or 2H sword skill. Its stock settings mirror vanilla, IIRC, so if you want everything else the same then you should only have to change that particular's skill value from 1.0 to something higher.

Fantastic.
So, let's say if that mod doubled damage, and enemies (and me) roughly go down twice as fast, then changing everything to level up twice as fast is probably the same overall pace as vanilla right?

Yup, assuming by everything you mean your armor/weapon/magic skills.

Awesome. Hope so, because I just rolled a new character, I'm a few hours in, and nothing, and I mean nothing, has leveled or improved at all. D:
edit: Uncapper is working wonderfully. Thanks man.

A few days ago I decided to make a house for my new character. So, every night of this week I invested a couple hours to work on a house. While many of the existing houses out there are very good, I always found them to be lacking something or that they were too big or that they deleted vanilla objects (which can lead to CTD problems). So here is the house I whipped up that I think is complete though I may keep adding to it in the future:
Forgotten Windmill: http://www.2shared.com/file/jQnDqP4t/Forgotten_Windmill.html

Hopefully all the files are included in the BSA. The CK is known for forgetting some but I reviewed the BSA and I didn't see anything missing.

Oh, and it isn't on nexus as I didn't plan on releasing this to the public, but I figured maybe one or two [H] members may enjoy the mod so here it is. :)

Some key points:
1. Should be bug free as I have tested it a lot. I also made sure there were no floating objects, seams, shadow striping, light flickering, etc.
2. I wanted to limit the amount of cells I edited to avoid conflicts. This is why I did no landscape editing besides adding objects to the land. Plus, the land was already beautiful so I didn't want to affect the great work Bethesda has done. In the end, only two cells should have been edited: the one the windmill is on and the cell behind it (I placed a single rock on it). I have yet to find any mods that modify these cells and these are also generic Wilderness cells so no quests/etc. take place here.
3. Interior lighting was a pain as I had to create a balance that looked good for vanilla Skyrim and also for ENB.
4. It has some backstory and atmospheric touches to it that maintain the theme I was going for. A cookie to whoever finds Inga's tombstone and her husband's bones. :)
5. Exterior lights can each be toggled on and off by the player. I would've done the same for the interior lights but Bethesda did not include 'off' models for many of them.
6. Plenty of storage and unique stuff. I'm quite proud of my stalactites despite how simple they are.
7. Fully navmeshed but untested with companions as I don't play with them.

Ever since I discovered ENB I have been tweaking more than playing :-(. It's addicring tying to get optimal quality.

So many of the presets are too dark at night. I think I'm honing in on the SuperB ENB preset with ambient light and exposure cranked up at night.

I still find corners and shadows at night a bit too dark but the color of this preset is best all around IMO

I also need to make the nights gloss and bloom more like the default settings do. The enb washes those out. I plate with bloom and object gloss but can't get it right. Re those the correct parameters to use? Ill post some comparison pics tonight

Does anyone know of a fix/mod for the 'stutter' that occurs on your character when switching from the first- to the third-person cam? I'm guessing the engine had to drop the player into the world after having loaded a new cell and switching to the third-person camera, which results in a momentary animation glitch. It's mildly annoying, though.

Also: is there a ranged killcam disabler that works with the current version? The one I've installed has no effect.

that sounds like your VRAM is running low and textures are swapping out. can you monitor vram and report back?

I understand that. What I'm saying is that low VRAM can cause "stutter"

in that case, you must have some body textures and/or clothing mods that have enormous size. Try putting on different clothes or try the lite skin version and see if results change. I don't know how high poly meshes fit into VRAM, but that might cause bumpiness too.

Skyrim Redone. Anyone play with this yet?

fuckin sweet! Now this is my kinda mod =D

Also, DJ, BRAVO on that house. Out of all the house mods, this is the coolest i've ever seen. I installed a huntsman shack once, but it pales in comparison.

Double props for including lore behind it... i don't know why so many modders leave this part out--the immersion is what Skyrim is about, and now this place really looks like something you could stumble across and hole up in for awhile.

I'm going to install it on my next play through and hope i find it =D

DJ, perfect timing. I've been looking for a nice Skyrim house.

Most just seem to be too much. Period. There are a few good ones, but this seems much more akin to what I was looking for. I'm going to give this a shot.

Interesting, downloaded. I plan to get back into skyrim when Dawnguard is on PC, but this looks just right for a fit for when the time comes.

If you guys do end up trying it out and liking it, let me know if you have any things you want added/removed or if there are any problems, like missing objects due to the CK forgetting to package them in the BSA file. I did notice that the trash bin doesn't empty itself automatically so I'll probably fix that in the future.

Skyrim Redone. Anyone play with this yet?

I've been using it. I like that I can't one-shot everything but the 'elite' versions of the mobs can take and do tons of damage. At level 8 my sneak attack with a 30 damage bow only takes a tiny sliver of life off of a Restless Draugr. Since the 'elite' spawns are increased I can hardly progress my skills. Because of this I've yet to make it through the quest to pick up the first piece of Wuuthrad; even with Vilkas and another follower. It's kind of refreshing but annoying since I spend so much time backtracking out of caves with incomplete quests because of spawns that I can't deal with.

Finally stopped tinkering and just started playing...and it's been glorious...but I do have two glaring annoyances.

Is there a fix yet for the transparent water/blood with SSAO in the newest version of ENB? I'd turn off AO, but IMO it just adds too much to turn off completely. With it on though, blood and water are usually completely transparent. It looks quite strange.

Second, anyone else get flickering water with reflect everything on? The only thing that fixes this is turning off all reflections

I always wanted to have it on, but it took my fps to the 20's :(

Flickering water is a vanilla problem. It should go away when you either reload your game or leaving that cell and returning to it. I think I have reflect everything on and the flickering water is pretty rare. Is yours flickering all the time?

what are the best texture mods and lighting / ssao etc for skyrim.. ima dive back in but i wanna use mods now that i have a 670

Here is a list I made for another member:
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1038791541&postcount=1848
& more stuff:
Enhanced Distant Terrain
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1038798666&postcount=1856
83Willows 101BugsHD Butterfly Dragonfly Luna-Moth Torchbug
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/4955
XCE - Xenius Character Enhancement
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/2356
Skill Interface Retexture
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/7308
And some large texture packs:
Skyrim HD - 2K
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/607/
Skyrim Realistic Overhaul
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/5400

And there are obviously more texture packs out there but I'm not going to track down and list every one.

Only one mod handles SSAO and that is ENB. So if you want SSAO, then it is either ENB or nvidia's SSAO (not sure if AMD has an option). ENB's SSAO causes water to be pretty transparent, but I found it to be less demanding than nvidia's SSAO and I think it is needed if you want Indirect Lighting (another ENB setting).

no shit? Well, perhaps this is something i need to try. Think it will be above 30fps on a my sig rig??

Compared to Nvidia's quality SSAO it seems faster but it is hard to tell now as I don't seem to be GPU bottlenecked any longer. Nvidia's fast SSAO is probably more lightweight but I can't stand the shimmering effect it gives on grass when the player is moving.

With my GTX 470, ENB SSAO only had a small impact on performance.

Oh, and I'm not sure how much a CPU matters with SSAO so that might be another factor.

you're awesome dude. thank you.

im assuming getting a mod manager is worth it yeah?

What video card/processor are you running, and what fps are you at with AO on?

I always wanted to have it on, but it took my fps to the 20's :(

Have you tried ENB 113? I was getting 15-30 fps with SSAO on but it's now 25-45 with the latest version.

I haven't tried anything in awhile. I'm hoping when i get this game all modded up again i'll have a more pleasant experience with ENB.

im excited.. i need some motivation to play this game; I never beat it..

I still haven't gotten past the quest that initiates the random dragon encounters, and I still have a ton of side quests left to do that I'll probably never finish. DG may be the first MQ I finish for a TES game.

And some cool not-yet-released mods:
This will allow UI widgets, including countdown timers for spells and such:
http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1386363-wipz-hud-widget-framework/

This one makes the player, NPCs, and/or creatures (it is modular) to leave footprints in the snow:
http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/13...in-the-snow/page__view__findpost__p__21083090

Finally, big mods like Luftahraan, Issgard, and Falskaar are making progress so I think it is safe to expect those to be released within a year, probably less.

What video card/processor are you running, and what fps are you at with AO on?

I always wanted to have it on, but it took my fps to the 20's :(

I'm always at 59fps 99.9% of the time. I think the ENB I'm using limits frames to 59, which I stay at. (except when entering a new badly optimized area where I get some drops).

I'm running a i7 990x with SLI'd GTX 590s. I'd give ENB a shot. SSAO is much easier on your system.

No, not all the time, but enough to bother me. Sometimes I guess I just notice it more than other times. The flickering water plus the transparency bug together drive me nuts though.

Bummer though. What about older version of ENB? I don't mind losing SSAO since I can at least force normal AO, but I'd REALLY like to keep SSIL. It's puuuuuurty.

I think old versions of ENB had the same SSAO problem. Besides, those lack the new features and optimizations, and it would be difficult to find an old ENB preset that is decent.

Is there a way to have SSIL active with SSAO deactivated?
