Skyrim impressions

Heh I shot her, waited 15 secs and fast traveled out :p

I've been working on the special jobs that you have to do for the thieves guild. It's pissing me off, up to 6 jobs in one area and no special job. Grrr, knowing my luck one has to do all 5 in one go.

Side note 7 more achievements left. This will mark the first 360 game that I've played and snagged all the achievements on :)

Yeah, the pissed me off too. Waiting 24 or more hours, then turning my quest to Vex before talking to the guy quest giver seemed to work best in getting him to give me those quests.

Overall (besides that point) though i think I had the best overall experience playing a thief in any game I recall being a thief in. (usually I opt for a different class)

loot loot loot loot loot.

You can invest in speech skills by finding trainer and leveling up speech which gives you better barter prices, and you can invest skill points in to the speech skill tree and get bonus.

if you're planning on levelling smithing and/or enchanting I find that at higher levels it starts to make some decent cash, you can smith some iron daggers for cheap by buying iron ore and iron ingots and leather and then enchant those items and sell for some good cash.

I stopped looting stuff when I reached about 250,000 gold, it just became pointless, I only looted quest items at that stage :)

Were abouts can i find speech trainers?

cheers

I never had that issue. I usually got a quest from both devon(?) and vex in the same city, finish it come back and once before I turned in the completed quest Devon offered me the special. If I got quest for cities I didn't need I just cancelled and asked for a new one.

I enjoyed the thief missions but I don't think I'll run anymore of those after that quest line.

For those of you complaining about companions getting owned and not really contributing, as a couple people mentioned, your companion's level is based on when you first met them...so if you level up, they are still stuck at the same crappy level.

If you read the wiki you can use the console to level them up, depending on if you consider it cheating or not. Personally I don't since I think it's a pretty stupid "feature" to not let your companion level up with you...so take it as you will.

To level up your companion:

Open the console
Use the mouse to select your companion.
Type "disable" as the first command and then type "enable" as the second command, without quotes.

This will cause your companion to disappear then reappear in their default clothing. Talk to them to have them rejoin you and all the gear that was on them is still there, you just need to remove any default items they had. Voila, now your companion is your level.

when you're high enough level I don't think really need the companion, when I needed a meat shield, I bring out a trusty Demora and he goes to work murdering people left and right.

So, who's the most interesting companion? (factoring everything: Combat, personality, quests, and comments at various geographical locations, etc..). I have this strong tendency to be a lone ranger.. but I should grab someone to mix things up.

If you're a sneak character then don't use a companion, ever.
Anyway, mages are the most overpowered. Melee companions are usually behind you and often ignore combat because they're too far away or AI is broken.
Archer companions miss too much. Even if you take an expert archer, they'll only shoot one arrow every 5 seconds and miss half the time.

Well Thieves Guild is done. Doing that I managed to knock out a few more achievements as well so bonus!

Any anyone conferm that you can only buy training up to 90? Meaning if say my lockpick is at ll 90+ I have to earn the last 10 points the normal way, I can't pay to be trained?

Other then when I've been(annoylying) forced to use a companion, I've only used them twice. Once was to take her(Whiterun chick) to get slaughtered at an alter, the other time I caught some dude living in my house with my wife, again he hit an alter. Next time I use one they as the other 2 will be taken to the alter.

Word of wise reguarding the special jobs for the thieves guild. Riften does not count.

Sneaking with a companion helped me level sneak faster. Companion gets spotted, you're still free to sneak around until you break cover or get spotted.

None of them have any real personality, they just carry your stuff and sometimes kill a bandit. My current companion is Ghrobash the Iron Hand, with a sword and shield he can do OK in combat, but seems better with an enchanted bow and good arrows.

I'm really digging skyrim, and that's saying a lot seeing is how I didn't like morrowind or oblivion.

I played for 8 hours straight tonight....

so far my only complaint is the stupid AI...or at least how the AI seems to lose you when they can clearly see where you went and the fact that they go full retard if you get on a rock or something and they can't get to you. I've killed a ton of things I probably shouldn't even have tried to take on just by getting somewhere they can't, hiding till they forget they can't see me even though I am right in front of them, and then arrow sneak attacking them..

I really need to figure out how to enchant my bow or get a really good supply of steel or dwarven arrows. Sick of using the iron ones.

first game, probably since, New Vegas that I just want to sit and play forever...I just got to work and I don't want to be here at all, I just want to play Skyrim.

what is funny about companions, I had one, some adventurer lady I met after I cleared out some mine. She was getting murdered left and right but always came back to life except when she walks in front of me like 10 hours later and gets a sneak arrow to the back...then she died for good..

The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun seems to have a good supply of arrows. It it to the left of the gate as you enter. I even bought daedric arrows there once. They have all the other arrows every time I go there but I am level 50. Never went there my early levels.

Does anyone else get random crash to desktop via Steam?????? So pissing me off...........otherwise - GOTY!

The most interesting companion is Cicero. I dont think he even has competition. And by interesting I mean crazy.

There are some good sneak companions. Dark Brotherhood initiates are probably the best at it, but not so useful in actual combat. They are more of a distraction.

Cicero's voice made me want to drive my head through a wall.

^^ ME TOO holy shit could they have made him any more annoying?

I think the AI is too dumb in this game to use any companion that isn't a melee dps

Yeah, I really haven't bothered with companions simply because I'm silent assassin and ranged sneak criticals are what I'm all about.

I'm going to say that companions in Fallout New Vegas were probably better realized...certainly character and writing wise, although I never really used them much, either, once I finished with their specific quests.

Well from what i've heard, the makers of FO:NV are just better at writing and dialogue than bethesda is. or maybe bethesda just doesn't put that kinda thing as a priority.

Marcurio is the best companion if you are anything but a destruction mage. Srsly, that be like BAZOOM and all the bad guys are like oh noooo and then I'm like SLAP and they're like oh nooo even more and then marcurio be like I'm an apprentice wizard not a pack mule and then I be like bitch pls and then he be like FAWOOOMM

Bethesda likes sandbox, but lacks RPG. Obsidian lacks weight to do things their own way. Give Obsidian dev privilege for the next Elder Scrolls and we all win.

For some reason my "=" doesn't work in the console. As well, Alt-Tab literally does nothing, as if the keys aren't recognized in game. Any ideas?

and Obsidian is always lacking time and resources. They'd also benefit with some extra artists on board. I think they would admit that too.

What's puzzling is that the lore seems to be fairly well written, but when it comes to quests and general commentary it tails way off.

"Don't you try and barter with me like those mercheants"... Dude, I'm fucking walking by you on a thoroughfare and you don't know me from Azura. STFU already.

Having recently hired Tim Cain (the power behind Troika games), I'd say they are inching their way up the ladder.

Uh, the guards can Google you. Obviously.

"I've heard of you and your honeyed words"

lol that's my favorite NPC Guard line

Not to mention they gave the same script to EVERY guard voice actor.

I remember watching a marketing video before skyrim was released which showed some footage of them doing the voicing work. It really made my expectations higher than what was delivered. After all the shit they were talking about in that video, i can't believe they copy + pasted the scripts so much. I mean, shit... the studio guy could have noticed that he was about to record the same thing and re-written it on the spot, and it would have been better than what is done.

Oh marketing and hype. I wanted skyrim here so bad that i bought into everything they told me lol.

i could write up 50 lines for the guards to say in probably 30 minutes, maybe an hour. Why they didn't take the time to do it before sending it all to be voiced is beyond me.

Tim Cain is temporary, I believe he himself stated that in an interview. Also, Troika was equal parts Leon Boyarsky and Jason Anderson. Heck, even Steve Moret was awesome.

I don't mind the dialogue as much as I mind that the same actors were used for multiple characters

I do have to give props to Max von Sydow as Esbern and Christopher Plummer as Arngeir (Greybeard)...both of them do a fabulous job with their roles and voice work...too bad most of the others are forgettable

If they hired them all, why would we want to play RPGs made by other studios?

in some locations (thieves guild, some others?) you can find someone practicing archery and swipe their arrows from the target. Steel was normal, once I had someone shooting orcish arrows.

Any place that the guards practice at, good for easy cash too.

The common arrows are worthless. And anyway after a point the only thing you bother taking any more is strong enchanted weapons, potions, ingredients, jewelry and magic robes. Screw everything else.
