Silverstone FT03... matx

1) In terms of temp Antec 920 (in extreme mode) will beat H60.

Choose what you like, both are good cooler. Your choice may depends on how far you will overclock your CPU.

2) If power is not an issue, 2x6950.

I'm not sure if 6990+120mm rad +fan in front will fit FT03

just my two cents ;)

Adding to this, I'm confused with the Corsair H series coolers and their incompatibility with the GFX exhaust that comes additionally with the FT03. Looking at my H50, I have it mounted so that the water pipes are on the top. Surely, you can mount the H60 and H70 vertically so that the GFX exhaust can be used at the same time with the FT03? Take a look here as to what I am refering too:

http://img.hexus.net/v2/cooling/Corsair/H70/hydro-h70-01-big.jpg

See, the radiator is mounted vertically. So this would not infringe on the gfx bracket that comes with the FT03, right?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I too am sitting on the fence regarding H60/H70.

Thanks.

Sorry It was I who confused here ;)

Yeah 6990 (12") should fit in there no prob. I think max length is a bit more than 13.7"

you'll need to do a little bit of musical chairs with the bottom 120mm bracket (experience with a HD6990 install, here :p), in order to get the HD6990 in, however, all of it fits :)

I was going to order a lian-li v354 before seeing this case, now I'm definitely going to buy this one!

I just have some doubts, what do you say?

1) H60 or Antec KÜHLER H2O 920?
2) 2x6950 or 1x6990?

In terms of temps, the H60 should beat EVERYTHING (H50/H70/Kuhler 920/Kuhler 620) with high speed fans in push/pull. This is because the H60 has the highest FPI. Crazy thing is with the H60, you could probably grab two 38mm San Ace fans (or something equivalent in power) and be super-cool.

I'd go with the 6990 the the slot closest to the CPU (it does fit. just remove the bottom fan, put the 6990 in, then reinstall the fan). And later if you need more grab a 6970 for some tri-fire action.

Just make sure you have a good psu.

its the same thing. if flipped same way as your pic provided, the other side opposite of the pipes has a piece that sticks out, that bumps into the fan bracket. dont think u can do it the other way (90' from shown) as in facing out. pipe assembly would bump into board or side of case.

see this pic.

any suggestion on best bang for buck cooler to go into this case on a SB board

Finally got my FT03 build *done*. Still a lot of tweaking to do though.

hoesntly i think this case is crap, the cooling doesnt seem all that efficient and the form factor is weird.

It's an old CoolIT Freezone

Actually, it's a *new* FZE unit. They made a (limited) 2nd revision of about 300 units, and, being Coolit is a Canadian company (close to home) I was lucky enough to grab one. Then they discontinued them. :( The only difference with this is a smaller and more powerful pump, and different tubes.

Thanks guys, I'll go with the H60 then.

Regarding gpus I don't know yet, with the money I'd spend on the 6990 I could almost get 3 6950s 2GB...

Gotta pay to play man. 'Tis the premium you pay for both power and size. Though tri-fire with 3x 6950s unlocked would be some pretty good performance.

Sure, but 2x6950s is not so far from 6990 performance wise, so I don't think it's worth the price upgrade :p

And it's still better than the 5970 I had before, so it's fine :D

Minor irritation with this case:
Only properly works for PSUs with a horizontal kettle lead socket.

I'm using an ocz modxstream 600W which has the socket vertical, meaning the lead comes out facing downwards - this interferes with the clip for the plastic side vent, meaning either I have to leave the side panel off, or not screw in the power supply, and push it in away from the mounts.

I should not have to change my power supply to fit this case...

Why could they not just make the side panel one sheet with holes - really irritating and such a shame for an otherwise decent case.

Anyway, its only until making the shift to itx.
I finally got around to taking some pictures to illustrate the problem:

As you can see, a bit of a problem; one which is forcing me to change either psu or case (most likely the former).
Yes I did try unscrewing the psu and pushing it back into the case, which did allow it to fit, but then I had some grounding issues (assumed it was due to the psu not being properly screwed in), so had to put it back...

finally got around to finishing my ft03 build, took bloody 4 hours. still yet to start it up, will see if it works tomorrow fingers crossed and also how loud the fans are.

Got a couple of 2600k / p8p67-m pro builds going as work PCs and so far liking this case despite a few annoying issues (plastic, inelegant USB 3.0 ports, etc).

One question, what kind of HDD temps are you guys seeing with it?

In one of the FT03s I have two Barracuda 7200.12s and one of them is running a bit hot at 45-47c and the other at a much better 34-35c. The hot one is mounted up high, and they were both running identical temps in previous case.

any suggestion on best bang for buck cooler to go into this case on a SB board

Try the Corsair A70 for $45 including fans. It comes with 2 fans but even in pull-only (push fan wouldn't clear Corsair Vengeance in all 4 slots) it was running at below 60c under load on a 2600k overclocked to 4.3ghz / 1.3v. The stock fans aren't silent, but not crazy loud either. With a quiet 18db fan running at 1600RPM it topped out at about 63-64c under load.

dbx,

Yeah I have two of Caviar Blacks 1TB mounted the same way, and temps read about the same as yours. My room temperature is anywhere from 21c to 27c, and HDDs' temps tend to fluctuate accordingly.

Let me throw another question though. I have an i5 2500K installed, and the core 0 is hottest, and the temperature tends decrease as you go from the core 0 to core 3. Is this because the core 0 is assignes tasks first? I know it's more of a CPU question, and it may be commonsense to you all, I'm just curious.

Core 0 very likely is the core that is assigned execution instructions first, with each core designation representing the order-of-task designation from there. I may be wrong about this, but if I recall correctly, you can run Task Manager (and have it set to show core loading) and a temperature monitoring application and as you load applications, you should see a corresponding relationship between the loading activity on each designated core in Task Manager with a increase in temperature for said core in the monitoring program.

It's nothing at all to worry about, since Turbo Boost essentially guarantees that unless you're running all cores at full load, at least one of the cores will be higher than the others due to the additional TDP being allocated to it/them.

I finally got all the components and assembled it yesterday. It took a bit, cause I did not have a clean table to install, and the room was a bit dark.

My setup is : gigabyte M68X, i5 2500k, Asus 6950 2GB.

I had quite a fight with the 6950, but when I tidied the psu cables it fit just fine. I'll try it out and then see if I need a crossfire. It currently idles at 41°, 44° when browsing and playing videos on youtube (well youporn but that's another story :asd: ).

Now, do you have any hints about the best way to cool this case? I was thinking about buying an H60 for the cpu (currently with the stock intel cooler), should I also add some fans to the case?

So while I am having some issues with the motherboard unrelated to the case, overall I've been fairly content with my build. However, I was curious what others may have used to replace the stock Silverstone fans in the case? I have Noctua's on my H70 radiator, so I'd only be replacing two stock fans: the bottom intake, and the fan angled towards the motherboard/cooler.

The H60 would definitely fit nicely. I had one briefly that I replaced (long story) with an H70, but the H60 was a breeze to install into the case.

I used 3 Gentle Typhoons 13 (1150RPM) to replace the stock fans. I'm considering using all 1850s or not. I'm waiting on a Max4GENE before really making any decision, however. I got all of the fans already, however.

So what was wrong with the H60?
Nothing. At the time I was re-building my system, it was the only cooler I had available, and the idle temps in the BIOS were uncomfortably high. I had tried the stock paste, applying my own AS5, re-seating it multiple times, etc., but the temperature never went down, so I figured it was defective and swapped it for a H70. I had purchased it the very first day the H60 was available locally, so just assumed it was possibly a first-run type of issue.

Anyway, the H70 exhibited similar temps, and after a bit more research, was able to find an obscure ASUS post that noted that certain P67 and H67 motherboards reported temperatures up to 20 C higher than the actual temps. So yeah, from what I can tell, the H60 was probably perfectly fine.

Are the Gentle Typhoons adequate for general case cooling? I know that a lot of people use them for radiators and heatsink cooling due to the high static air pressure, but wasn't sure about for general case cooling.

Oh, and know when the Max 4 Gene should be hitting retail outlets? If my P8H67-M EVO keeps acting up and ASUS doesn't provide any updates/fixes, I'm considering swapping to it.

Been reading this forum for a bit now in the build up to getting my new machine, in particular this thread. I finally recieved my beautiful FT03 on Wednesday. (had it built by Scan, as I am pretty busy and don't have the free time currently to build myself). The insides are as per my signature below.

I will be taking some photos of the insides over the weekend, as well as running some Benchmarks. I will post the results here (if I am allowed with my low post count).

At the moment I am running with the stock 3x120mm fans. and the 120mm fan on my heatsink on the topside "pulling" air towards the top of the case. CPU temps seem to be fine with the 4.5ghz overclock. my GTX580 however hit ~70degrees on initial testing out the box and I am wondering if swapping the angled lower 120mm for 2x80mm would be an improvement? I will try a bit of a sterner test over the weekend and record the temps. I will also have look back through this thread in detail for ideas.

The GTX580 temps seem fine to me. However, do NOT switch the 120mm for twin 80s, unless if you are willing to use high CFM 80s that pump air, and pure noise. Just speaking from personal experience (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1539037&page=24 - two posts of pics there for proof of testing :D)

And I used server grade 80s, and nice/relatively quiet Noctua 80s.

In other news.... I ordered a MaxIV GENE.... :D I cannot wait!! :D

Did you use the GTAP13 for all your 120mm fans?

Oh, and where'd you order the Max IV Gene from?

Bah, looks like Buy.com took it down :(

ah, I'm sorry :( I probably bought the last one sold by Buy.com itself last night. On the other hand, if I get it first (in theory, I can pick it up on Sat/Sun), I promise to post taunting pics :D

Bah :p Is there any way you can report the quality of the DAC/audio output on it? I know it has an "OMGZ X-FI 2", but I wasn't overly impressed with the X-Fi on my Rampage II Gene, so curious to see if it's improved. I'm currently using a P8H67-M EVO and it's giving me some fits, so if it doesn't improve considering going to the Max IV Gene.

Lol!! My first decent board was a Rampage II GENE :p

As for the audio, I do have a uDAC2, however...

Even before the release of the Rampage II GENE, some OCN and XS members pointed out, of all the X-Fi software mode supported chipsets, the Rampage II GENE used one of the lowest end one avalible. The Max IV GENE seems to be okay, however, based on a few prelim specs :D

Once you get it up and running, can you please check if the BIOS has the option to enable powering on via a keystroke on a PS/2 keyboard?

lol, I remember that option for an USB KB on one of my mobos, just it never worked right...

will do.

Thanks. It's never worked right for me either when that option was for USB keyboards. It always works for me though when the option is for PS/2 keyboards.

Hehe, completely opposite.

Ok so I did some thorough hardware tests and this is what HWmonitor recorded:

HWmonitor.jpg

81 degrees for the GPU seems quite high, but I have been told below 90 is safe. Thoughts guys?
I was very happy with Idle temps, and 71 max for the CPU is pretty good.

(I am assuming the OCZ Agility3 is badly calibrated as I doubt it was 128 lol)
