Should I get TF2?

TF2 is a definite buy! This game will keep you busy for hours on end and it can really bring people together (pending on whether or not you get competent people to play with and who are willing to plan...)

does the pope wear a funny hat?

sure does!!

get it!

my reason:

I cursed myself the first 5-6 hours after buying it and playing it

Then the next time i played it, everything started to click, and now im addicted,

maybe its like smoking a cigeratte, sucks the first few times, but then you are addicted

Love the game, Hate ciggerets.

That was a good laugh! :D , anyway back on topic you can get the orange box online for ~ 40, so its better than getting TF2 alone

Umm.

You are aware that the demoman has a grenade launcher, right?

lol... I take it you have never played TFC? Every single class had grenades, even 2 different types of grenades.... You really find grenades in TF2 to be spam?? Like really?? I can't take you seriously... You must have just been dueling against some really good demo players, because there just isn't any grenade spam in TF2... well, unless the entire team goes demo...

it is quite evident that you have never played dustbowl on a high caliber server. I'll leave it at that since you have no clue what you're talking about.

Wow you sound like you have never played a TF game let alone TF2. And or you just really suck at it and can't compete. Deal with it.

The previous poster is right, tf2 nade spam is nothing like the tfc nade spam. It used to be way WAY way worse.

Are you into creating your own maps?

No one has mentioned this, but when you BUY The Orange Box off Steam, you can also download (at no extra cost) Source SDK which has something inside it called The Hammer. It allows you to make any Source based game map you want. TF2, Half-Life, CS:S, PORTAL and dare I say....with the added links for other software, you can make your own game.

Which, btw, Portal is a total MIND fuk. If ever there was a place and purpose to use the phrase "Think outside the box", this is totally it. Also, as I mentioned, you can make your own Portal map, so if you think your clever enough, you can make a map to try and stump the [H] crowd.

:D

Edit: Oh yeah, and inside the SDK stuff, they have something called Face Poser. DAMN halarious tool. I made the Heavy grin like a freakin idiot....I couldnt stop laughing.

Two years ago I gave up FPS games in favor of RTS.

Team Fortress 2 dragged me back. Now I have to divide my time between TF2 and CoH.

CURSE YOU TF2 FOR BEING SO AWESOME.

Demos are easily countered...the class is rather poor at fast-paced, up-close combat. Plus their low ammo capacity means they can't really spam grenades a lot without having to resupply. Just because a good team has managed to pin you in spawn a few times on Dustbowl doesn't mean that nade spam is a problem in TF2.

The demo class is all about grenades. Of course they're going to throw a lot of them...it's that, or they run around swinging bottles at people. They also have no direct-fire weapons and are horribly ineffective outside of certain roles. Unsupported, a demo dies FAST, even on defense.

Fine, but that's not my point. I don't care that TFC might have been worse.
TFC spam is far, far, faaaaaaar worse than TF2. So much more in fact that TF2 spam can hardly even be called such. Be glad the devs went the direction they did.

They are actually Pipe Bombs & Sticky Bombs, if you really wanna analyze it.

Tighly packed assault maps with mostly linear routes and usualy at least 2 demo man per team, yeah spamming demo grenades is quite common in my experience, next to the pyro he's one of the few classes that can make a whole bunch of people retreat quickly.

He's the only class that can reliably take out well placed and well looked after sentries as well without lots of team mates needing to gang up and uber etc.

I'll put in my .02...

I got the Orange Box, and the game I play most is TF2. It is super fun, I honestly don't know where the time goes when I play it. Having never played Team Fortress Classic, walking into this multi-player only game was a little intimidating because I didn't know the maps, didn't know the weapons, wasn't sure what the capabilities of each player was, etc..

The only way to get good is to play, play, play. There aren't any BOTs, so if you need practice you'll have to settle for human vs human. I died more than I cared to when I first started, so playing on a fast respawn server (you usually have to wait 10-15 seconds after you die) is key when you are just starting out I think.

There are 2 map modes currently available - Capture the Flag and Capture Point.

The map I first liked was CTF_2Fort because it is small, and thus easy to learn, but now I friggin LOVE CP_warpath....I really love being a soldier and nuking those engineer's dispensers >;)

Going to youtube and looking at some vids by a dude named evildadelus or something..he shows you how to play the spy and pyro very well.

Easiest class to play if you are just starting is the heavy imo, because he doesn't have anything "hidden" to him. Probably the hardest in terms of technique and style is spy and engineer.

BUY IT - YOU WON'T REGRET IT :) :)

Gonna buy it tonight. Maybe it was just the class I was watching on youtube but the guy had a knife and was just raping people with it, it looked so overpowered. Does every class get a knife or what?

I really apprishiate everyones help.

That would be the spy, every class has a melee weapon to hit people with. Each class has their special purposes, the spies is to down turrets and kill the enemy from the inside out basically.

I would also say get OrangeBox if you don't own HL2, etc. I'm 39, been playing FPS PC games since Wolf 3D. I got burned out on them. I still have not finished BioShock, and wish I had not bought Crysis. TF2 has restored my faith in FPS team games. Why, I can use one word... 'FUN'. TF2 is just plain fun. Each class is truly unique, and each fun to play.

I use to suck at the Demoman and now I'm pretty decent. You want speed play the Scout, stealth the Spy (for the record I think the BEST players in TFC are the ones who know how to play as the Spy, I absolutely suck at it, and I HATE getting killed by them, but they add a great element to the game), you love playing Defense then the Engineer is your man, (it's one of my favorite roles and one, IMO, that takes a lot of skill to play well), are you a brute force guy that loves Russians, then pick up your chaingun, find a medic and let lose havoc!!

Bah, I got bored after 3 days.. It was very cool on the day I bought, but then I just lost interest.

How can you get bored after 3 days...that's not even enough time to play through all the maps and all the classes. It can get boring if you keep dying though. ;)

Just bought it on steam, $29.95

btw it comes with source SDK base 2007

Ehh, played it. Feels like I'm playing a modded version of unreal tournament. Its so fast paced I don't think I like it at all.

Because I figured it out pretty fast, I guess.. The game is very team dependent. You cannot actually own, like you can in quake or cs.

One word: fun.

And you will be good at this game, there are 9 different play style, you Will be good at at least one, unlike other fps, which all you do is aim and shoot, every enemy you encounter. TF2 require more teamwork than individual skill, while individual skills still important, but they are worthless without a good team and cooperation.

If you a lone gamer try to show off personal skills this is not the game for you (not like there is anything wrong with it). Even under the worse scenario you will still get a good laugh out of it.

Brooo....Give it a chance. I know you havent found YOUR favorite class yet, cause you wouldnt have made that post if ya had. And you got the SDK (which btw, you should update :) )

I thought for sure when I watched the videos, I was going to be the Engineer. How could I not be....so I thought. Ended up playing as the Heavy and atm, ive got over 60 hours clocked in on that class alone. Not many people enjoy playing as the Heavy, but they found a class they did like, Im sure of that.

Point is, keep on trying out the different classes and remember that if you tried one class and gave it some honest hours of playtime, try another class, then come back to the first one. You will find that along with you playing, time went by, and with that time, you gained experience. With that NEW experience, you might find playing the initial class you didnt like at first, NOW is fun as hell to play cause you know more about the game and what to do....or better yet, what NOT to do.

Yeah your right, I played another 2 hours and liked it more. Its way more fun when your team is talking, I wish I had some buddys to play it with regularly. I don't understand how to play a spy or a engineer, so far the classes I like are heavy and medic, medic more. Game is growing on me, the teamwork is pretty fantastic, just wish I had some peeps to play with. My steam ID: series939

I don't think the game actually comes with the real source SDK, it comes with the base content which is just files that TF2 has to have because it is shared from HL2, if that makes sence.

Yes, yes you can. A skilled solider who mastered rocket jump can dominate a game.

I agree, however it makes dick all diference to the actual team balance, a good player in a lot of other games can help pull the team up if they're getting badly owned. The problem in TF2 is if you get lumped with newbs you're doomed to die, no matter how hard you work at winning you never will.

It enfuriates me no end and actually makes the game very hard to enjoy at times.

Those are the two classes most worth investing your time in. Great fun, except for FF-disabled servers, in which case Spy is just about useless as the Pyros have licence to go around lighting up anyone on their team to check.

Even on FF servers pyros light up everyone. The bigger problem is everyone shotgunning each other to see if they're a spy. I think if they enabled FF and gave the spy something other than a cloak they'd be better balanced. As it is, everyone shotguns their teammates and every now and then they kill a spy. While otoh you're OPd on FF servers because you have invisibility and no one will touch you unless you're obviously acting like a spy.

Spies are almost useless at the moment, a good team will get a pyro or a HWG and sit him next to a dispenser which dishes out ammo faster than they can use it, and constantly fire without stopping, lights up even the invisible spies.

Even if do manage to get past and zap then engineer knock it off without consequence, the only single character who can deal with turrets against a good team is the demoman, I'm spending all my time as him now, it's the only way to make sure your team doesn't get pinned by good engineers.

if its a map where you get a 30 second setup, and im on offense, ill start as spy, go sap their sentries, and backstab till i die, ..then switch to whatever other offense class, ...it usually helps my team out a lot, and the engies, fall back

That's a wasted HWG just sitting there firing at nothing just in case a spy should come along, and the dispenser is useless to anyone else as well...if you've managed to get them to resort to that level of anti-spy tactics, you're doing a good job.

That's really how you should think as a spy: if they tie up several people trying to counter your actions, the rest of your team gets a significant advantage. The same goes for sniping on 2fort...it's not that snipers are particularly effective, but when they have four or five snipers on the battlements because they're having a hard time taking down the other team's one or two snipers, they don't have much of an offense left.

Just remember that as a spy, you HAVE to take it for the team from time to time. The same goes for playing scout.

I saw this engineer yesterday putting teleporters on the tops of narrow flights of stairs and when i asked him why is he blocking the stairs he said thats a way to check for spys. I guess that could work but seems kind of annoying when trying to get up the stairs only to be teleported somewhere i don't want to be.
