Hey all, here's the specs for the new system I'll be building in the next month. Keep in mind all prices are in CANADIAN dollars.

How does it look?

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Mobile Barton - OEM Vibe Computers $145.71
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB DDR Lite Tiger Direct $321.99
DFI NFII Ultra Infinity nVIDIA nForce2 Socket A Tiger Direct $139.99
Chieftec Dragon Black DX01BD/SPX02B Tiger Direct $97.99
Liteon 48X24X48 CD-RW/16X DVD-ROM OEM Vibe Computers $66.11
WD1200JB 120GB 7200/8MB ATA/100 OEM Vibe Computers $130.27
Corsair TWINX PC3200 DDR (2x512MB) Tiger Direct $335.99
Coolmax 12" IDE Black Round Cable (Qty - 2) Tiger Direct $11.95
Coolermaster 80MM LED Fan - Blue (Qty - 2) Vibe Computers $21.90
ViewSonic G90FB 19" .21mm 1920 x 1140 Tiger Direct $328.99
VA4-C7040 Aeroflow Socket-A/370/7 CPU Fan Vibe Computers $30.95
Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite w/ Tilt Wheel Tiger Direct $116.99
Enermax EG365P-VE FM 350 Watt ATX12V Vibe Computers $66.33
Cooler Master 80MM CASE FAN (Qty - 2) Vibe Computers $7.98

Unless your on an extremely small budget, I'd go with either a P4C or an Athlon64. The AthlonXPs are pretty much fading away in performance.

Heh, that's a misprint. I'm not even putting a floppy in this computer. Should read 2 IDE cables.

I would say go w/ newegg, but they don't ship to canada.

and you might wanna go with pc3500 ram (even though the chip is unlocked). And you might wanna go with a higher wattage PSU

Coolermaster case fans are quite loud, if you care. And I would go with SATA, but that's just me.

Yea, I'll consider the higher ram once I'm ready to buy in about 3 weeks. Hopefully the prices stay.

Better PSU... yea prob not a bad idea. SATA, I'm not too familiar. I know this board is ready for it. That would just require a SATA hard drive? Is that the WD Raptor that everyone is talking about? HOw much do you gain in performance, and lose in MB/$?

I have 3 Coolermaster cases.....the fans are EXTREMELY quite and still move a lot of air. I've gone so far as to buy extra Coolermaster fans and put them in my non-Coolermaster cases.

You are paying WAY TOO MUCH for everything. The 2500 mobile can be got for 98.00 at newegg. A 9800 Pro can be got for 210 at newegg. I suggest you compare all your prices to newegg because you will save at least 200 for all of that.

I'll overlook this error since your new....but notice he states the prices are in Canadian.....meaning he lives in Canada...meaning Newegg is not a option for him.

and the can doller is worth less( just to maek that clear) i think its somware around 3/4 a us doller, so multiply all the prices by .7584 and that=1,382.67 not to bad

Haha, thanks for clearing up the whole Canadian issue guys. Our dollar closed Friday at 75.66 cents US (which is incidently almost the highest its been in 10 years)

Hey, is any old SATA hard drive good, or are there specific ones to aim for. Everyone talks about the Raptors, why is this?

10000 rpms. But, if your only getting one Raptor, it's not worth it. The only time you see them really shine is when you slap 2 of them in RAID0.

Yea, thats all I could figure out was 10,000 RPM. Not worth the price difference if you ask me. I'll just get a maxtor or something instead.

how's that? unless you go scsi you won't find a faster drive. i'd definately go for a raptor for the seek times and supliment it with a big, cheap drive if you need storage space

I must have a different model. I have 1 in my system, and it's the loudest thing in there. (Drowns out Intel stock, 2 on IC7-Max3, YS-Tech on back, 1 on FX5200, 2 on Tagan psu). It came with the Coolermaster centurion.

They are tuned for enterprise application. Rapid small data block access. Daul 7200 rpm in raid 0 or single 7200 actulay perform better on for the desktop applications. Especialy gaming. Dont buy the hype.

On the other had the 74 gig version has firmware tuned for the desk top. The reason is WD designed the 36 giger to take on the scsi enteprise market. The 74 giger has been tuned to meet the needs of the market that inexplicabley has made the 36 giger a success.

So go single 74gig or raid 0 with two. Keep in mind that for just 150 dollars I for example am running two 80 gig 7k250 sATA drives in a Raid 0 array and the only time the Raptors would defeat my config for 4 times the money is in a scenerio that my desktop will never see not to mention most others and siad scenario would last about 6 nanoseconds.

Please don't flame me lol ;)

Why are you putting a mobile processor in a desktop system? The regular Athlon 2500+ is $30 cheaper in retail packaging.

hehe, why are you even registered for this forum? ;) The mobile 2500 is unlocked and has a default voltage of 1.45.

Ahh.. I don't go for the whole overclocking thing. Stability and noise are too important to my stuff since I work primarily by tele-commuting and can't afford my systems going down at an inopportune moment for hours.
