Hello all,
I am considering in upgrading my current seedbox(just 3x1TB HD103UJ).
Upgrade with the meaning of:
-addition of RAID controller(sataII,pciex x8,min 8ports)
-more harddrives(1TB or 1.5TB)
As I am a rather noobish person regarding to RAID I kindly ask for your advice about this.
The hardware will be used in a seedbox(utorrent and home fileserver). From what I have found a good solution for what I am looking for is the Adaptec Raid 5805 Kit card. That plus 8x HD154UI(Samsung green drives) for example.
Is it a good idea to put 5400rpm drives in a raid5 or 6 array that will run 24/7?
Should I consider reducing the number of drives and go for the raid class drives?
Can you please recommend me something that should fulfill all these requirements.

The current seedbox config is:
E4400,2x1gb ddr2-800,intel q965 mobo,3x1TB HD103UJ drives.
New mobo will be DFI UT X48 T2R, with CoolerMaster Z600 passive,4x1gb ddr2-800,Corsair Tx650 all in a Lian Li PC-A16B with two EX-34NB hard cages. Can I improve here something also?

That's alot of hardware for just a seedbox/fileserver, what other intended use will it have?

My seedbox virtual machine runs off of my dell 840, and I only have one virtual cpu, 512mb ram, and a 10gb xp partition dedicated to it. My 840s storage is a perc6 with 4x1tb drives in raid5.
My dell 840 isnt really easy to expand, so I choose raid 5 merely for the usable space.raid 6 is no different than raid 5 other than you have a second parity block.

Well this is the hardware that I have and some that I will buy. From what i've understood, with raid6 i can have two drives fail and not loose all of the data. For 8 drives that is nice.
Any feedback regarding controller and drives?

I can't really say too much on your drive choice, and you are correct with raid6 you can lose up to two drives and still run in a degraded state. You could also go Raid 5, with a hotspare. I ran a Adaptec 3405 for a long while, and I really like the 5805 cards from my experience with them.

Ok,so its settled, the controller will be the 5805. But what about drives?
Which one is better?
HE103UJ (1TB Samsung Raid class)
WD1002FBYS (1TB WD RE3)
WD1000FYPS (1TB WD RE2-GP)
WD2002FYPS (2TB WD RE4-GP)
Raid5 with 4 2TB drives or raid6 with 8 1TB drives? Is raid5 with 8 1TB drives, HE103UJ for example safe?

All of those drives are on the HCL, so any would work.
The 2x2tb option is the cheapest, uses the least power and leaves room for expansion down the road.

Well it seems that I cannot use the E4400 for my seedbox.
So I am currently looking for mobo+cpu+ram for a file server.
i3 530+Gigabyte H55M-UD2H+Kingston HyperX 4GB 1600 CL9 any good? This cpu has 73W TDP
Is AMD II X2 235e EE +GA-MA785GT-UD3H +Kingston HyperX 4GB 1600 CL9 better? This cpu has 45W TDP
IMHO the platform should be as low power as possible but still pack some punch. Is 1600 ram overkill?
Is there some lga775 best-buy?

Honestly, you'd do just fine with an Atom. Else go AMD - like one of the 45w TDP Semprons or something.
