Seagate Rocks!

A few weeks ago, I got a Seagate 750GB 7200.11 series drive. It went bad in a week and a day, which was very annoying. It would only be recognized as a 0GB drive by my computer, or any other computer that I would hook it up to. (Drives go bad sometimes. It just happens, and no matter how well you try for QC, bad ones get through. That's life.)

It took me a couple days to get the RMA, due to my own lazyness, and another couple to get it sent out.

I got the replacement in only 5 days. it took 3 days for them to get it and they sent it to me with 2 day shipping. In addition, they sent me a 1TB drive as a replacement! I got another 250GB in exchange for the hassle! I can say, Seagate rocks for that.

Anyone else have a story like this?

Well, most my drives are seagates (I have 6 here right now, 320GB+, .9 & .10) and haven't had the opportunity (?) of having to deal with an RMA. Really good drives, nice and quiet.

If you do a search here in the forums, you'll see that Seagate does this for a lot of people. Like me :D

Had a 300GB drive die, RMA it back to Seagate, got a 400GB drive in return. Yay!

I had a 300GB IDE go bad and did the advanced replacement for an extra $20. Received drive 3 days later, with an identical 300GB but had a huge "refurbished" label on it. Did your replacement drives say refurbished on it as well?

Just for curiosity's sake, could you go check the warranty on the replacement drive? I wonder if they set it to match the one you sent in.

The replacement drive expires Dec 21 09. I could not determine when my original drive expired. Looks like Seagate removed it from their system. I assume it was suppose to expire in Dec 09. So the replacement drive they sent me made it expire the same time the original drive was to expire.

I don't really like that. I know most companies I have dealt with will send you a brand new product and the warranty will be renewed as if you bought it at the store. But then again if Seagate kept sending you new hard drives with renewed 5 year warranty then no one would buy a HDD until 15 years. Just kinda wish they would extend the warranty one extra year for a refurbished drive. I believe this reburb I have is about to fail soon. :c/

I received a refurbished one. I don't complain as long as it works. I see some people are complaining about "refurbished" products, but this is how the warranty works on all companies. You get a repaired unit or either new if its not repairable. Don't see anything wrong with that.

I feel their pain. I boguht a 150Gb Raptor when they first came out. I think it was $260. it died right after 30 days. I got back a refurbished raptor....So I paid $260 for a refurb product... IMO I got ripped off in this case. I would not mind that if it worked for a couple years then failed...But it died right outside of the store return policy and I get crap back.... for what I paid its just nonsense...

I am prolly the only person here, who hates the refurbished sticker, but thinks the hardware is more then likely better then the orginal..? I feel that once it has been used, and a problem found and corrected, the entire unit is way more likely to never clause an issue again....

Well, technically, they could wait for your defective drive to come in, repair it, and send it back to you. In that case would you now own a refurbished product, or your original drive that had been repaired?

They simply send you "refurbished" drive to get you back up and running as quickly as possible. As the OP found out, if the same model is not available, they will send a better model if it is available.

i agree giving you refurb sux... that is my only worry w my system is hds failing. for expensive drives they should give you another new one with warranty from old drive..

i think the raptor 150gb drives are cursed personally and they should come out with something else

I'm afraid I sent off a 320GB 7200.10, and received a (refurbished) 320GB 7200.10 in return :(

Phew. I just sent a 320 GB drive in, and was worried I'd get something else back. I run in a RAID configuration, and it hurts performance if the drives aren't identical.

I agree. I would feel more comfortable with a drive that has had special attention paid to it to make sure it is working properly!

The unfortunate problem with a refurb, is if it was returned for an intermittent problem, it may not have shown up during the in house testing and repair procedure.

I've worked on electronics for many years and almost half of repairs on parts come up with a "No Problem Found" result.

Seagate, Western Digital, IBM, and Hitachi have all done this for me.

In fact, my last hard drive RMA was a DOA from WD (thanks a lot, Newegg). They had a new drive at my door in under 48 hours with a prepaid return label.

That's great. There seems to be alot of people, at least here on {H], who have had similar experiences with Seagate. All of my current HDs are Seagates and I fortunately haven't had to RMA one but if I do, I'm confident that the process will be nice and smooth based on what others have said!

How many people in the world are incapable of simple things like.. plugging in the right cables, or pressing the power button? Right BIOS settings, etc. etc.

Honestly, I've seen a lot of that happen too... friend gives me a "broken" harddrive... turns out he had jumpers wrong

My 320GB 7200.10 was D.O.A. RMA'd direct to Seagate on Friday, they haven't received it yet, so I'll reserve judgement at the moment!

why not exchange to vendor for new if DOA then RMA to seagate and get a refurbished drive?

My 320g barracuda drive just died, but I might not return it due to personal data on the drive (not encrypted). I suppose the paranoia is that supposing they do repair the drive (i'm thinking it just might need a new pcb) that the data would be accessible and out of my control until such time as they format it (if they even do that)

to those who have shorter warranties with their RMA'd refurb drives: have you talked to seagate support about this? I'm curious because my current warranty goes until 2011, and I"m going to be extremely unhappy if (IF I return it) my return drive doesn't go until 2011 also.

In my case, Western Digital was willing to send out a new drive along with a prepaid package to return the old one. This way I was without a drive for about 48 hours.

Newegg would have required me to mail in the old one at my expense, wait for them to evaluate, then mail another one off. This would have required me to be without a drive for a week or more.

Out of several dozen drives I've had to RMA over the years, most of the drives I remember getting back have a refurb sticker over a new sticker... I remember hearing from a WD insider that they would take new drives and stick a new sticker over it for the warranty stuff... I have seen the same practive on Seagate drives and IBM drives...

Unfortunately, I don't think I've ever had drive upgrades... I have received newer models which threw my RAID arrays out of whack... (which just means its time to buy new drives and sell/cycle old ones) :D

I've had good luck with Seagate in the past. Never had to send a drive back to them, but it's awesome that they up the capacity sometimes when they send a replacement drive. Great business strategy!

I never hesitate to buy Seagate drives.
