Seagate 3TB External $129.99

Not hot.

PM to staples and use $25 off coupon then it's hot.
That's what I did last week.

Why is this not hot? Besides the fact that newegg is selling it for $10 more, so it's not that cheap relatively speaking.

Most 2tb 5400-5900rpm drives run in this range anyway.

Is this two 1.5tbs or a 3tb drive? I'm imagining it's just a 2.5" sata drive (or two) that could be used as an internal media drive.

I already said why it's not hot.

PM to staples and use $25 off coupon.
$130-$25 = $105+$2 coupon = $107.

$107 < $130

$130 =! Hot deal

It is a single 3TB drive in a standard external enclosure. I have one sitting on my desk. I received the package from Staples yesterday.
I paid $107+tax.

Go ahead and buy it from Amazon for $130 if you think it's a hot deal.

Thanks J Macker, going to get one for backing up my photos.
So whats the code to get the 25.00 off?

**** got a pm from J Macker he got a coupon here http://www.e-junkie.com/shop/tag/403/22221/tag.php ****

dunno about all that shit looks like a scam to me. think OP deal is more legit, in my opinion.

I can't verify if it's legit or not but I got a coupon there to get the drive at Staples and it worked just fine. Lot of people on SD buy their coupons there as well so just to give you an idea.

I can't believe you guys aren't familiar with e-junkie Staples coupons.

Always buy a coupon and use it when you're planning on spending over $75 there.
It's worked for many years. I've never had a problem.

Hard drives are usually cheapest at staples because of the $25 off coupon. (or $30 off $150)

Finally back to old prices. 3TB? Hellllllo GPT.

Now to open this thing without breaking any tabs. Mangled up a few old credit cards already.

warranty works by serial number on the drive label. I'm not worried about breaking tabs.

I ordered one from Staples yesterday with a $25 off $75 coupon from e-junkies. Total came out to $113 after CA tax + $2 for the coupon. Here's to hoping it doesn't crap out on me.

I just ran the drive's serial through Seagate's warranty checker. It's classified as an OEM unit and has no warranty.

Unfortunately, the 6 expired credit cards that I used to try to wedge the tabs open didn't work as well as I'd hoped. Busted over half the tabs when it finally popped off.

Migrating data over from my older, failing Seagate. The thing makes some nasty noises out of the box. Disabled APM but the noise is still there. ?!?!?!? I've got a 5900rpm 2tb Seagate that makes similar noises. What the. Clunk clunk clunk

Other than that, bye bye MBR and hello GPT :) The future is now.

Should have dedicated the first chunk of the drive as a "fast" partition before I started moving everything over. Oh well.

eh, no. try sending the bare drive back to seagate for RMA and see what happens.

i would strongly recommend running a full surface scan before committing data to it, then monitoring it with a tool like Hard Disk Sentinel. This is Seagate we're talking about.

Yikes. Should have figured something was up if there was clunking going on with APM off. Turns out it's the old Seagate. Been working "fine" up until now. Just been noticing some reallocated sectors which is never a good sign. Turns out the clunking is the old drive. It's been dropping out every few minutes while copying files off it. Switching to copying more important stuff first, and it looks like they all cleared fine. Wouldn't be too bummed if it died before I got the rest out. Sheesh. Out of warranty by two months.

New drive seems fine. Will surface scan it tonight, although I'm imagining (read: assuming. read: ass out of myself) it's fine. The old Seagate can't wait much longer.

I'm surprised that Staples' free shipping was 1-day shipping. I'll be sure to run a surface scan in the morning.

I opened up the 3TB drive I bought from Staples and it has this drive inside:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844

7200rpm, 64mb cache

However, using the online seagate warranty checker it says my drive is a "component" and to contact my place of purchase.

The drive was SUPER hot because I had just unplugged it. I'm surprised they would cram it into such a restrictive enclosure without active cooling.

At least the bottom of the drive is on stands and is open to the air. Interesting the drive comes with a firmware newer than available from Seagate's website.

Me either, it's a standard deal thing.

This is a good deal, even without Staples. There is no reason not to get a Staples coupon. I have used sites like the ones J Macker suggested in the past with success. I think the last time I did was about two years ago when I got a suprisingly nice E-Machine 23" 16:9 LCD for $129.99 - $25 off coupon = $104.99 total cost. What was more epic but slightly disappointing was that the sale was initially for a AOC 24" at the same $129.99 price. IIRC I didn't get paid until the next day and they sold out of that model. I did manage to alert my brother before they sold out and he snapped up a 24" while I had to settle for the 23".

Both were excellent deals and I wouldn't consider myself a monitor nazi, but I do appreciate what a good TN panel monitor can do for the price. The Emachines was a rebranded Acer and was a great monitor for me until I sold it for $80 and got this killer Acer LED-LCD from the egg back in Nov-Dec of last year. It ain't no IPS but the colors are vibrant and is the closest monitor I had to my old Dell 2407WFP I got rid of a few years ago because of a offer for a trade which I couldn't turn down. I miss it because was the best monitor I have had the pleasure of owning. You got actual 16:10, 1920x1200, quality S-PVA panel, excellent viewing angles and the versitility of the stand. Anyone with who has been keeping on eye on monitor releases the past few years can tell you the Dell 2407WFP especially the A04 revision is an epic monitor. Of couse the new revisions aren't too shabby either haha.

If someone has a badass SLR camera and a single picture is like 10MB+ then you could hit a TB of pics easily in a year or two if you are the family shutter bug.

Me? I have my trust galaxy nexus phone that serves all my picture and movie taking needs. (as you can see I don't need much lol)

While running a surface scan (which took insanely long since I was only using USB 2.0) the drive got really, really hot according to SMART. Now I have it sitting above the top exhaust fan on my P180 and it is running significantly cooler.

For reference:
5D MK2 is around 27MB a pop. (The 5D3 at 22MP is around the same.)
The new Nikon D800 at 36MP is around 70MB a pic.

If you're shooting around 10,000 photos a year, I would say you're an enthusiast. 50,000+, you're more than likely a pro... and hopefully earning money from your work. (A wedding photographer as an example is probably shooting around 1,000 photos for a wedding.)

I have 18,000 files for 2011 from a 5D2. It's a combination of photos and video as well as PSD files, so if it was straight raw photos it would be less. It's around 500GB (492GB to be a bit more precise.)
