I don’t mean to panic anyone but…we are all GOING TO DIE!!

Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs.

Hmmm. The Aztecs said the end of the world comes in 2012. Maybe they were right given a +/- of 1%

There will be a lot of sarcastic replies to this story, but don't take it lightly.

It isn't "end of the world", but massive disruption to our daily lives WILL occur should these storms have the effect NASA predicts.

All the better to have a bit of "survival" in you ahead of time.

I had already thrown out my tackle box. tequila, and "I ate the worm" T-shirts in order to properly welcome our new space worm overlords before I realized my error.
 
Well, as long as it's not a "lightning storm in space" I suppose we'll be ok. Of course, Nero was a pretty cool ca--errr... Romulan, considering. ;)
 
I'm gonna go buy thousands of #2 pencils and create a massive pencil lead shielded enclosure for my pc and set Steam to offline mode so I can still game in SP mode. Woe be it to those who bought AC2 or SH5 needing those always on connections!

Isn't this like trying to forecast a Hurricane before there is one. Stupid. Last year the same set of scientists predicted a record number of hurricanes, we had 1 named storm.

Forecasts are a guess!
 
Do we all need to start burning our important data to DVD/BR? :eek:

1 named storm? There were 9 in the Atlantic (three of which made hurricane status), and 20 in the Pacific (8 hurricanes, including first Cat5 in eight years for the area). Maybe not record breaking, but not exactly calm either.

And no, the scientist predicting weather in our atmosphere aren't the same ones looking at space storms... although I'm sure there's a similar predictability, it's hardly a guess.

Predicting the behavior of a sunspot cycle is fairly reliable once the cycle is well underway (about 3 years after the minimum in sunspot number occurs).

Most of you didn't read it apparently. This is supposed to only affect the UK. It's not a global event.

Also, this crap happens every 20-30 years... Plenty of stories. Never has one been the "OMG WE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

I didn't see where it said ONLY the UK. It's a British news source, so of course Britain was named specifically, just as US based news tends to focus on the US. Events like this are of a global nature, and it will affect more than just one small area.

I'll maintain skepticism.
Science can only demonstrate that which is reproducible... Otherwise it's just guesswork.
What IS reproducible is isolated, smaller events. I'll hold to the view that's actually scientifically sound versus the speculatory one.
 
It isn't really a doom event, just something to be aware of if something stops working about then.
 
Couldn't I avoid this by putting all my precious electronics in a lead enclosure/safe?
