SB Overclocking results?

I successfully booted into Windows @ 51x100 with auto vcore burning at 1.63v @ load.

Makes you wonder how that voltage was determined automatically when the max programmable VID is 1.52V. Sounds like it's extrapolating.

Tested yesterday for 12 hours prime stable. I will be turning on HT too. All this on a $100 MSI mobo :D
 
So I tried the unvolting of the CPU PLL and it looks to have increased stability. Anyone else tried this? or know why this would be the case?

Are these processors really that delicate? What if you plan on encoding an HD video that takes 10 -12 hours would that eventually degrade the processor since X264 can put quite a load on the CPU? If so what's the point of these things?

You mean PLL overvoltage? It's known to allow higher multipliers, at the cost of S3 sleep (at least for now).

at clocks 5.0 and above using programs like prine and linx have shown dergration ..
These chips cant take the abuse the old one did ... encoding and other dailys no problem as they dont push the core to 100 percent usage .. ill do most 20 linx sessions or 4 hour primes
 
Thanks for the explanation, I agree that 10 - 20 runs of linx (max memmory) and 2-3 hours of OCCT should be sufficient for stability testing, but these Sandy Bridges are a totally different animal aren't they.

This cracks me up. If you can't even use your CPU without worrying about it dying on you then its clock frequency is completely irrelevant.

Stop flaming. If someone wants to be careful with their chips, instead of burning them out at 1.5v with 12 hour prime or LinX runs, then LET them. It's not your money. It's theirs. If you don't like it, paypal them some cash for a spare chip and THEN you can tell them to do what you want with the chip....

I really don't care what others do with their gear. I think anyone who runs Prime or any other bench for 12 hours gets what they deserve and obviously has no clue.

If you care to check HWBot you will see I know a little about the subject and have rarely injured a chip. You are the one in serious need of a life/attention. I read through the thread and the OP came back and said his cpu turned out to be just fine after all. I can tell you from my limited experience thus far with this platform that most problems being reported are in fact bios related. From my buds at HWBot they report much the same across the board be it Asus, Gigabyte or whatever.

Overclocking is a gamble no matter how you look at it. Safe and overclocking do not really belong in the same sentence, but you suspected this all along in the back of your mind didnt you? :p

He probably means undervolting. I've seen some posts that indicate that UNDERvolting the PLL can increase stability and lower temps.

Hell, I'm undervolting my PLL. I ended up with 4.8 @ 1.325v.

People jack up the voltage waaaaay too high. Every generation has had this "CPUs are dying" thread. Mine are always fine. People get stoopid, ask for too much and kill their CPUs themselves.

I was running my overclock with the PLL at 1.80625 because of a recommendation from someone, but when I turned it back to 1.8 (the default) its still stable and runs about 3c cooler under small FFT load

A little bit. I haven't undervolted it by much, (1.66875v compared to the usual 1.7) so I got a pretty minor drop. About 5 degrees. Your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't call 5C a minor drop. That's a pretty big difference.
 
What would be a safe maximum temperature for the 2500k and 2600k when overclocking?

Depends on your temps. 24/7 I'm at 1.385 @ 4.8ghz. Temps are 65C full load. If I was at 90C, I'd be uncomfortable with those volts due to electron migration.

I think we just don't know longterm.
 
I've been running my 4.8Ghz 2600K at 100% load (24/7) for 2 weeks now. My temps do not go above 65 either, though between 2-5AM, they rise by a couple of degrees. I'd say keep it at 65 or below.
 
Keeping mine at 4.4 for now. I need this comp to last a while for both gaming and grad school. And no, I'm not talking about the chipset "problem" that MIGHT happen down the road.
