SATA Cables: Any Difference?

Hey,

I'm getting ready to put together my FlexRAID NAS box with a few drives, and I have various SATA cables of various ages from my cable drawer.


Are the SATA cables the same from 1.5GB/s to 3GB/s and 6GB/s or have things changed?(sort of like CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6 Ethernet cables)

Those have their good and bad points. I really hate the clips on the motherboard side because it makes it much harder to remove them and it seems that I always want to hot remove one and I can not get it out without pulling the sata cable next to it that has a working drive from a raid 6 array..
 
All the same, however be aware that there are quality differences between individual cables. I bench marked a cable that came with a mobo, as opposed a nice aftermarket one, and noted a 1.5-2mb difference in transfer speeds using ATTO. Anything to be concerned about? Absolutely not, but it does show that there is a bit of a difference depending on the quality of the cable. In this case, the slower one was using much thinner gauge wire.

Yep.

I purchase from SataCables and they actually give wire specs from the super flexible 30 AWG wire to the thicker 26 or 28 AWG wire.

This, along with the clips and coatings, are the differences between .99 and 1.99 cables (just an example).
