This seems silly.

It's not most common GS4 with the Snapdragon that does it, it's the Exynos A15 Octa-core version that cheats.

Kinda amusing really. I guess Samsung put the Snapdragon in most of their GS4's for a reason.

The Snapdragon variant also has specific coding to adjust its behavior if it detects certain benchmarks. Although in this case it only disables all throttling. Which you still have to question though whether or not it skews the results as it pertains to real world usage (which will have throttling enabled).

Benchmarks in general are retarded. I stopped caring about cheaters shortly after nvidias fiascos with the fx5800.

Benchmarks on mobile phones are double retarded. They don't test for lag, smoothness and responsivness, or basically anything that actually matters for smartphone use.

So not only does Samsung hire lots of shills to infect forums such as this, these shills also post a lot of fake reviews and also outright lies about competitors' products including posting ridiculous photoshopped pictures, but also Samsung lies about the performance of their own products?

Have you seen Apple do that? Has Samsung become more evil than Apple?

Sorry, I am an Android noob but would rooting the phone allow the system to run at top performance all the time?

It seems to me that the problem here is that the phone is being throttled for everything but (certain) benchmarks.

All that aside this phone is pretty fricking sweet.

The only thing that could fix it is an custom ROM like Cyanogenmod.

Really?

You wouldn't need a custom ROM, you'd only need a custom kernel with throttling options. Custom kernels exist for most stock-based ROMs for most devices, cannot speak for the S4 as of now. But if other kernels don't exist now they will soon.

From the above linked article:

But Samsung has strongly denied the claim.

"Under ordinary conditions, the Galaxy S4 has been designed to allow a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz," it said.

"However, the maximum GPU frequency is lowered to 480MHz for certain gaming apps that may cause an overload, when they are used for a prolonged period of time in full-screen mode," it said.

"Meanwhile, a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz is applicable for running apps that are usually used in full-screen mode, such as the S Browser, Gallery, Camera, Video Player and certain benchmarking apps, which also demand substantial performance.

"The maximum GPU frequencies for the Galaxy S4 have been varied to provide optimal user experience for our customers, and were not intended to improve certain benchmark results."

It's also a kinda stupid claim to say that you need maximum GPU frequency for crap like videos (doesn't use the GPU, has dedicated decoding hardware), camera (doesn't need the GPU), S-browser (doesn't need FULL POWER), etc.

Yes, the outrage here is on this benchmark upping......my question is who cares? I sure as hell dont buy a phone based on benchmarks, dont even look at them....I bought my S4 for other variables.

As for the dirty business practices, all companies have a history of this, just to the degree they have been caught, if you want a "clean" company, go buy Pepsi-cola....

the story isn't just about the phone. it's about dirty business practices and samsung has a history of this.

I'll quote this just because nobody seems to be taking notice.

Owner of two gs3's and two gnote 2's. And you hit the nail right in the head!

Someone in upper management has nothing to do but waste engineering resources so they can claim biggest benchmark epeen.

Because canned benchmarks mean jackshit in real world. I would never buy any product based on cans.

So why does it matter to Samsung? Because it obviously helps in sells...

im sorry but im still trying to find out how this is a terrible cheat, all they did was disable clock scaling, they arent trimming shaders or adding extentions to fool the final score.

Sorry but this is petty to be upset about.

Because the phone has software on it that changes its natural operating parameters in a way that benefits only benchmarks and misleads users. Disabling the lower clock speeds is just weird.

I'm sorry, but steroids in baseball made baseball more entertaining... Am I right?

Justifying cheating is hilarious.

Whatever, no matter what you will be pissed off at samsung, forgot who I was talking to.

I also forget that you will support Samsung in whatever even in lying, cheating, and stealing. Does the gang have a sign?

OMG are there corporations that lie, cheat, and steal!!! Say it ain't so! Call the news outlets, we got BREAKING NEWS here!

Why I don't spend money from Walmart...

Whatever bank you got your mortgage or college loans through or bank with, your grocery store, your gas station, the people who made your signature computers...guess what? They ALL lie, cheat, and steal. For ANY business organization larger than a Mom/Pop store it is PAR for the course.

They all do it. Not just Samsung and Walmart.

Indeed. It's generally called "advertising" to them. ;)

I did say I was a hipster... I also support credit unions. And also I have no mortgage or loans. And, yes, own my own cars and houses.

I kind of want to go Charlie Sheen and say, "Winning!" right now... but I'm not that obnoxious.

Oh no you are very obnoxious.

So why does it matter to Samsung? Because it obviously helps in sells...

Because the majority of Samsung owners bought their Samsung phones based on canned benchmarks?

Sorry, I'm pretty sure they are the minority.

Does any one else fake their benchmarks? Apple? HTC? LG? Motorola? Nokia? Sony? If this is SO meaningless, why did Samsung do it? This defense of Samsung is absurd.

Because every major corporation cheats in some way, shape, or form, it's okay for Samsung to cheat in benchmarks that few cares about. Yeah, makes perfect sense.

I don't think Apple acknowledges benchmarks. I doubt you will find an Apple document stating that the GPU will run at X MHz. Apply the same to the CPU.

That said, I'm not surprised by what Samsung is doing and I don't like it. Like others have already said, canned benchmarks suck. Most people will decide to buy a phone just because "they like it" and never give the SoC a second thought.

Oh noes, such evil, never heard of a company paying anyone to mention them ever!

What ever are we going to do to right this terrible deed!?!?

Astroturfing is so low and very annoying. I know some people on these forums are probably on Samsung's payroll.

They get reported pretty fast, we've had some htc ones earlier too, most the time they are bots with terrible responses.
