Ryzen 5 1400 opinion

I've been thinking on getting a Ryzen 5 1400 + AsRock B350M Pro 4 to replace my current rig (i5 4590 + Z87 MPower) cause i need more threads to render and compile, also need to downsize my rig. I can't go any further on to another Ryzen 5 cause my budget is low.

What do you think?, any experiences with the R5 1400 or the B350M PRO 4?

IMO, if you're going to make a change you should really pony up the extra $50 to get the Ryzen 5 1600. If you need more threads that's going to do a lot for you having 6/12 vs 4/4.

AsRock B350M Pro 4 - Newegg for $80

To find a deal, you could also go to slickdeals.net and add "B350 motherboard" and "Ryzen 1600" to the deal alerts

EDIT: also remember that there is no iGPU on Ryzen; if you're using that currently you will also need to pair with a discrete GPU

EDIT2: looks like you'll need to buy ram as your board is DDR3 and the Ryzen (or any new platform) is DDR4

If you really just want a smaller rig, buy Haswell miniITX motherboard.

Anything else would be a waste of money, unless you went with twice the budget.
 
I would watch out with Ryzen cpu over 4 cores on B350 motherboards most of them have questionable components for 24/7 use for 6 to 8 core unless you have cooling kit for the VRM and even then you have to be picky which motherboard.

I tried to grab one but their very rare and expensive now, specially the ones with Z chipset (if i stay at Haswell ill upgrade to a i5 k).

I read some good opinions about this board, i mean, i'm not gonna do LN2, just some casual OC to have fun :)

You mentioned originally wanting more threads for 'rendering and compiling'. You should check out benchmarks of the programs you use on other CPUs which have greater core/thread counts to determine how much improvement you might realize
 
Thanks for your replies guys. After reading some reviews i think i'll pass on the R5 1400 and save a little more to get a R5 1600.

Problem is there are not enough R5 1400 benchmarks yet, just the same gaming and synthetic benchmarks all over the reviews on the web. That's why i came asking here.

You should be able to at least get an idea by looking at other 4-core/8-thread CPU's, 6-core/12-thread CPU's, etc. I think your plan is solid, save on up and keep researching!
 
I don't think it would be worth it for the 1400. Usually CPUs last a long time, might as well spend just a bit more and get the 1600.

My worries about the VRMs have been put to rest, then again if I kill everything its not really going to bother me as my Ryzen build is more of an experiment. Personally OP eat ramen a couple weeks and skip the 1400, buy a 1600...
