Does anyone know if I need to reinstall Windows 11? I'm coming from a 7800X3D CPU on an X670E Extreme motherboard. I already updated the BIOS obviously. Just wondering if I also need to re-install Windows and update the chipset drivers?

No. Just install, boot, then install new AMD drivers from amd.com and reboot - should be fine. Especially with 8 core all v-cache CPUs - easy.

There can be some fuckery if you just pop and swap. Personally, I would do a clean install or follow what Jay did with RevoUninstaller -

Good point! Better safe than sorry. Learned the hard way myself when swapping GPUs from NVIDIA to AMD. DDU alone not enough in some cases!

I think AM5 X3D (7800X3D) to AM5 X3D (9800X3D) should be safe but you never know!

The walmart one went OOS now so I'm guessing the right part just marked incorrectly as the chat rep also said, digital items usually don't go oos this quick if ever.

fwiw, looks like combos that include the 9800X3D at NewEgg are still available. At least, it let me place an order for a combo with mobo + 9800X3D.

You're fine. You can update the chipset if there is a new one available. Ideally make sure your BIOS is on AGESA 1.2.0.2a since it has 9000X3D optimizations.

There could be fuckery if you swap from a 7900X3D or 7950X3D, but it will be fine going from 7800X3D. Only the multi CCD have to use that stuff from Jay's video.

My newegg order just shipped and will be here Monday. I also ordered a mobo and memory with it as well.

What sucks is the LBC (Low Base Convexity) version of the Noctura DH-15 G2 which is specially for AMD is back ordered so I won’t be able to build until next week.
Where did you order the G2?
I tried to order first on Newegg but my order was immediately cancelled due to no stock, despite the website saying it was in stock.
Similar thing on Amazon too... not a cancellation but no actual delivery date because they don't actually have it in stock so I cancelled.
My microcenter only has the older D15 in stock.
Fortunately I already have AM5 mounting hardware for my NH-D14 so I'm going to just try that first and see how it goes. I'm surprised the G2 isn't widely available yet though... both newegg and amazon had it listed as shipped and sold by noctua themselves rather than the actual website. I just want the standard version.

I was on the fence but with recent events, expect all electronics and everything in general to go up yugely in price soon. Will be a comic tragedy..

Anyone notice the new "Turbo Game Mode" setting in the BIOS?

Got the 9800X3D installed.

After a round of Fortnite (finished top 10 - so a longer one) - 1080p / 360Hz - RX 7900 XT:

Realllly nice. Arctic 280MM AIO and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Last pic - tower of AM5 now updated. :)

leave it off. its one of those cpu enhancements things that cause all sort of issues....

Ok so after reading a few things around the internet, this is what it does:

For dual CCD chips, it disables the slower CCD.

For all CPUs, it disables SMT.

There may or may not be some other stuff going on to prioritize main game threads to the fastest boosting cores. But, this is essentially a single click marketing tool, for disabling those things. Which you could already do, via separate, buried settings.

i know what it is, thats why im saying not to use it...

Well, TPU ran a whole article about disabling SMT on Zen 5. And I didn't know what "Turbo Game Mode" does. So, I thought it informative to explain what this feature actually does. Which is disable SMT and the slower CCD.

Personally, I would recommend people with dual CCD chips, to try simply disabling the slower CCD. But not disable SMT.

Everyone else, don't mess with it.

Give us some settings and we'll make it happen.

Nah but I am interested in 0.1%/1% lows in fast-paced games (in particular, 1440p/240hz+ or 1080p/480hz+.) X3D turns CS2 into butter and I'm curious how much of a thicker slice we're getting in this generation. Also a bit excited to see what they pull off with the 9900X3D/9950X3D chips.

Try the settings shown in this time-stamped video:

On a 7800X3D, this results in the same performance as stock. But, drops 10C off the cinibench temps (I tried it on my own setup).

Because Zen 5 is a different architecture and boosts higher, it may need more like 85 watts to keep "stock" performance.

confirmed.
order placed at like 10:35am PST. Well after the standalone CPU was sold out.
Combo deal went through and getting my 9800X3D.

10:35am PST, CPU alone was out of stock and unable to add to cart.
which is why I started looking at combos that included the 9800X3D. The combo did go through, while the standalone CPU was unavailable.

point being, the combos may still have the CPU available if the standalone CPU is not available.

no. you uninstall the chipset drivers, run the clean up tool to double check, then swap. thats what your supposed to do anyways, or do like the vid above shows.
That’s what I did exactly. All good thus far. Had 7800X3D prior.

I didnt know AMD was still supporting socket A, looks like my Abit NF7-S is finally getting an upgrade 20 years later :-P
Welcome to the fast lane!! lol. That's where I started around age 13. Athlon XP 2500+ to 3200+ and ATi 9500np -> 9700np flash made me such a happy budget gamer back then. We've come a long way 🫡
