Redesigning the Windows Logo

I don't even want to know what Microsoft paid this design agency for this. Unless the fee was lunch at Burger King, they got ripped off. That couldn't have taken more than five minutes to make with MS Paint.

I like how the logo looks somewhat 3 dimensional. I don't like that the lettering is the same color though.

Steve, I just don't understand Microsoft sometimes. These guys can come up with some pretty brilliant shit, but damn they just can't get marketing right. What is that logo design? I was hoping this flat looking design was just a beta thing. I guess the designers of the Whistler interface during the beta stages were onto something (I wonder how many people remember that).

I like the old light blue rounded edge window one better...but it's already done soooo....

Well, one can't fault them for trying to fit into the Metro UI style-- flat, non-shaded borders, windows, etc.

Looks extremely boring & bland. MS seems to be really disconnected from reality about what is actually good graphic design & marketing.

Better than the win98 logo

It looks really similar to the Windows 1.0 logo. I guess MS wants to remind us what a step backwards Windows 8 is? :p

It's clean, simple, and actually looks like a window. Kind of makes sense for an interface that's supposed to be clean, simple, and modern that's (ironically?) called.....Windows.

Ultimately I'm indifferent towards a logo as a company can have the coolest logo in the world and have the shittiest product. Still, it is growing on me.

Maybe something is wrong with me, I detest the look of metro and the new logo. If Microsoft paid more than the cost of a 99cent burger, they got took.

Silly Microsoft. They already have a good Windows logo: the one they use for their mythical Microsoft Stores (which don't really exist anywhere).

Take Microsoft Store logo; add "Windows 8" logotype. Done.

It's stupid and something a kid could have done left alone in MS Paint for 5 minutes... but then again that's how Windows 8's Metro is going to be... so... *shrug*

Anyone remember that episode of ST:TNG where Picard and a few others got turned into kids and locked in the ship's classroom with dumbed down computers that wouldn't let them do shit? They were running Windows 8... :D

Design wise, this logo is pretty mediocre. Not because it's simple, as simple is probably the best thing for a logo. Just look at Nike's swoosh.

That said, the concept is bland, and that's why the logo is meh. Not because it could have been digitally created in 5 minutes.

Paula asked us a simple question, “your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”

Microsoft and Windows are all about putting technology in people's hands to empower them to find their own perspectives. And that is what the new logo was meant to be. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bringing Windows back to its roots – reimagining the Windows logo as just that – a window.

Brilliant. That's why they paid the big bucks for a fancy "design" agency to come up with for them?

I could personally care less about the logo....does the OS actually work well and have enough improvements to warrant me upgrading from Win 7 is the real question. I'm going to be using my computer or playing games or whatever, I'm not going to be staring at a shiny logo for hours on end.

on the upside it will be easy to spoof teh new logo in photohaus...when the sheer clusterF*** that is metro sets in and annoys the h*** out of you.

Entire windows 8 design is crap and does look like crap(the redesigned aero, redesigned logos, absence of unified classic theme, start screen and so on) just feels blank and too angular. I'm staying on W7 for sure.

It's interesting, actually, when you really look at the thing: a frameless window looks a lot like a basic representation of multiple desktops, two on top of another two. But Windows 8 doesn't support multiple desktops. Microsoft's main desktop OS competitor does.

Oops.

That probably cost them 20 grand if they had to use an outside designer since this is a logo for M$, a multi billion dollar company.

Like many products from many companies, they leave an upgrade path by underdelivering on the first product. "Windows 8 can display 3-bit color depth." Then when the next versions comes, they'll be shouting "Upgrade to Windows 9! Now with 16-bit color depth!"

Wow

Ok, as a graphic designer I really do appreciate "clean & simple" but that logo is just naff.

It's hilarious how these large marketing and design companies can churn out a turd and sell it for an absurd amount of cash.

/facepalm

Oh.. they probably spent a LOT more than that. Major Logo designs can cost into the MILLIONS.

It's a little too simple; remove the text and it's just a bunch of boxes that people won't recognize.

Meh, I have no problem with it. Seems like I am the minority though. Oh well, a different logo won't be the end of my world. I do like how the tried to get away from the "flag" look from before. I'll be snagging a copy of Windows 8 as soon as the first student deals comes up.
