+1, but without knowing what it's for, I've had the most luck (in terms of longevity) with Seagate drives. I'm sure others' MMV.
 
I have had more failures (using a % of total drives) from Seagate drives than any other brand. Don't have any experience with the desktop Toshiba drives but the portable units have served me well. As silk186 has stated the WD drives you mention are not designed for desktop use. I have bought nothing but WD Black drives for the last 3 years (over 40 drives) and all but 1 (I physically knocked it off my desk while it was plugged into a USB adapter) still perform like new. They may cost a few dollars more but have a 5yr warranty. Just bought a WD black 2tb drive from newegg.com 2 days ago for $139 (shell shocker special).

Then I'd skip the Western Digital drives, since they're more likely more expensive and are only 5900 rpm (or whatever intellisense is).

I'd avoid the Seagate, since it's still based on the older 7200.14 tech. So that leaves the Toshiba, imo.

If you want to stick with 2TB for desktop you should look at the black line from WD.

5 year warranty and good track record, I have several still working great after 35k+ hours including a 2TB FASS with almost 40K hours.

FWIW the DT01 series are simply rebranded HGST drives, the product line was acquired when Toshiba got HGST consumer 3.5" lines from WD. I wouldn't imagine they have a failure rate higher than any other drive.
 
From what I read WD had to give Toshiba some of it's 3.5 tech, they did not just give them an entire line.
WD had to give their Chinese facility to Toshiba and WD had to buy the flooded fab in Thailand from Toshiba.
The drives are made cheaper, they sell for less price for competition and they have a higher failure rate.

Hitachi drives were also cheaper (to buy) than Seagate and WD, but I don't think they were made cheaper (or of a lesser quality than the others). Hitachi also had drives made in China.
After Toshiba bought the 3.5" HGST division they started selling drives with lables on them saying "Made by Hitachi Global Storage Products", so they were in fact Hitachi drives. Now, they've changed the label to say Toshiba only, but I doubt they've changed anything about the drives, except probably a new firmware, so the drives can be identified as Toshiba (earlier firmwares were showing disks as HGST).
There is a french retailer that posts component return rates from time to time. I know this is not the same as failure rates, but if they fail so often as you say they do, the return rates should also be quite higher.

According ot NewEgg, the WD 4TB Red drive, that is not made in China, has the same rating as the Toshiba DT01ACA200 drive, that is made in China - 3 eggs out of 5 for Toshiba and 3 eggs out of 5 for WD Red. So, this should mean that WD Red drives are junk. I know they have other Red models (less than 4TB) with better ratings, but so does Toshiba. For example - the retail package of the same Toshiba DT01ACA200 drive has 4 out of 5 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3NY1DD1294 According to Amazon, the same Toshiba DT01ACA200 has 4 out of 5 stars - http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-3-5-I...F8&qid=1395847394&sr=8-4&keywords=toshiba+2tb , which does not really correspond to "sky high" failure rates. I think NE should probably learn how to handle bare drives correctly.

btw, I have 4 Hitachi drives - 3 of them are made in China and one is made in Thailand and they all work fine. 1 of the drives made in China is more than 4 years old with 30k hours on it. I don't really think there is such a big difference between the Chinese and the Thailand facility in terms of product quality and I don't think I'm that lucky to have the only non-junk Hitachi drives (made in China).

The criticism is that BackBlaze are using consumer desktop drives (and not enterprise ones) in a server environment. I agree with that part. Yes, if you use the Seagate drives in a desktop computer case, there will be less vibration and heat (compared to the racks, used by BackBlaze) and they will probably last longer, but there were Hitachi and WD consumer drives, that were used in the same racks as the others and they did not have such big AFR as some Seagate drives.
So, BackBlaze research might not be scientific, but it is better that nothing (at least for me it is).

Edit: Actually, does it matter to you if it's 512b, 512e (emulated) or 4k sectors? I'm not sure if we've got 4k native drives yet but this is still 512e :/
Aren't 512e (emulated) drives actually 4k native? They emulate 512 bytes format for backward compatibility with some older systems (OS).

Debunked how? Honestly I have been saying hitachi is the most reliable for years before that article came out. This is from working in the DataCenter in pools of 10s of thousands of drives and my own experience has mirror'd theirs (seagate failing the worse by far, wd being way better but still failing quite a bit and hitachi failing the least of the three by far).
 
So the fact that I'm using consumer drives in a server raid array that is powered on and drives are accessed about 12 hours a day 7 days a week means its actually relevant data for me?

Either way I've had less hitatchi drives fail on me than anything. TBH I've never had a hitatchi fail on me.

The problem is that you can't turn the emulation off, isn't it? I'm not 100% sure, but I thought that to be the case. If so, then it means that there is always a performance penalty because of this emulation, rather than only a penalty when you get the alignment wrong. (It is of course much worse when the alignment is wrong.)

I got it now. Yes, you are right on saying, that there are no 4k native consumer drives (without the 512 bytes emulation), yet. Probably some high-end enterprise models, but I'm not 100% sure, either.

WD Black or nothing.Consumer HDD's are sucking now. Pay the premium and get a Black drive or a straight enterprise drive.

Another example showing hitachi superiority.... 30x3TB hitachi coolspin drives in a hardware raid aray (even behind SAS expanders) never has given me a single issue...

Not a single re-allocated or pending re-allocation sector... on *all* 30 disks. Go try to do that with seagate. You will never *ever* get an array of 30 disks with > 2 years powered on time and have no defects on any of the disks. It won't happen, I gaurantee it. I would *dare* someone to show a seagate array with stats like this. Hell I would be absolutely flored if you could even find someone who had 30 seagate disks in an array which showed none had failed after 2 years... Again even that is highly unlikely but no re-allocated sectors or any issues of any kind I just don't believe is possible with seagate disks.

Enterprise drives are often close to twice the cost. The thing is at my work we bought both and the enterprise seagate drives still fell way short of hitachi deskstars... So why by shitty seagate enterprise disks when you can get *better* non-enterprise hitachi disks for 1/2 the price?

And yes if your a business you should be using enterprise drives but the sad thing is that businesses that need 10s of thousands of disks will try to get them as cheap as they can. The company I used to work for has kind of learned their lesson on seagate and now only buy hitachi ultrastars but for a lot of years they bought desktop seagate drives, If I had to guess how many drives I would say over 20,000 seagate AS disks.
 
This is the reason the HGST NAS drives should be a big hit. They are a deskstar with some ultrastar features sprinkled in for a very good price and made in the "new" Thailand facility so it should be state of the art with top ISO cleanroom certs.

....yes there is something going on with red drives, either it's design, shipping or they shipped out a bad batch run.

I was going to get a pair of SE then started to check numbers and the NAS not only was just as fast but idle and read/write power draw was much better thus run cooler.
 
And they find out that's for a very good reason... "I bought the absolute cheapest product on the market and it sucked, WTF?!?!?"

Ive bought a ton of cheap HGST drives and they have been great so I don't feel that because something is cheap it should automatically suck. Got a bunch of 4TB's (30 ish) for $150 a piece.
