Basically i need to know if i shoudl keep my current PS or upgrade it..

My home server, holds all my movies, games, mp3 etc, all legal to me :)

Specs

Tyan Tomcat 815 Motherboard
P III 733mhz CPU (Coppermine)
512mb pc133 ram
S3 Trio 2d/3x video card
2 x Promise Ultra 133 controllers
Highpoint Raid card, 2 channel
PCI Nic
PCI Wireless G card.

1 x 120GB Maxtor * FOR OS/Temp data
2 x 250GB Western Digitals
1 x 200GB Seagate
4 x 120GB Maxtors for my Raid array, mirror for backup.
Generic Fdd and Cdrom. *i can take these 2 out.

basically im looking to add another 250gig hdd or two. and ill probably put in a SATA controller card as well. taking up all 6 pci slots on the board.

The current PS i have is an Allied 500watt its handing it fine. not overheating or crashing or nothing. the system is solid. but if i added another 250gig or so would i need a new PS or my current is ok?

Thanks in advance. and HAPPY 4TH!

As your CPU is powered from the +5V rail a modern dual +12V rail PSU would not be properly utilized.
However with all of those HDD's you still need alot of +12V amperage.

This Antec True Power 430W should be fine.
Output +5V@36A, +3.3V@28A, +12V@26A, -5V@0.5A, -12V@1A, +5VSB@2A

OR

ENERMAX Whisper II EG465P-VE FMA(24) ATX12V 460W
Output +3.3V@35A, +5V@35A, +12V@33A, -12V@1A, +5VSB@2.2A

IMO an Allied/Deer has no business being anywhere near a server... I'd replace it regardless of how well it's working. My suggestions would be the one I have, the Fortron FSP530-60GNA; or any non ATX 2.0 Fortron/Sparkle unit around 400w. Preferably the 120mm fan models. The older generation Antec Truepowers should also do.

thats quit the funny suggestion.

i have just that specific Antec Truepower 430W PS. I was goin to put it in the server, but i figured 500W would be more power, but yea i know the antecs are better. i guess i got a lil work tonite.

oh i forgot to add. im also running 5 80mm case fans in it as well. and 1 60mm fan :) lots of stuff. so you figure this Antec 430W PS should handle the load nice?

Yes, the newer ones with +12V@26A is not even a question & the older ones with +12V@20A should be fine too. ;)

heres the specs on my Enermax PS

+3.3v @ 38A
+5v @ 44A
+12v @ 20A
-5v @ 2A
+5Vusb @ 2.2A

+3.3V & +5V : 220W Max Total Power 431 Watts

So this shoudl be fine, as its got 20A on the 12v Rail. why so much more on the 5V and 3.3V? all that should handle my server proper too?

That Enermax should run it too, and would still be a big step up from Deer. You have one of the older ones from back when all CPUs were powered from the 5v rail, and coincidently you have just such a system for it to go into. I think I would still run the Antec with it, but that Enermax ain't no slouch either - I have two friends running those older 5v based 430w units.

This is fine. ;)

even an old eneermax 431watt would be fine... they have a high 5v amperage.

ok so ive made the swap put my enermax in there, but taking the Allied out and looking @ it i notice the +5v has 52A on it, and the +12V has 20A 3.3V has 28A. and it says +5v +12v +3.3v total power not exceed max 472W

wouldnt that be plenty? or is it more the quality of the Amps on the allied i shoulod be worried about? because i got a delayed disk write failure two nites in a row andi have to reboot the pc to fix it because it becomes sluggish and unresponsive. im hopin this new PS will take care of that

Bingo - Deer/Allied is just not very good at building good PSU's. Some are downright dangerous - when they die, it is very common for them to take other hardware with them.

HAHAHAH with a person like this as their [H] title "PSU Warranty Voider" its great to hear this! LOL

Hehehe - seriously, I owned a Deer before I started voiding the warranty on every PSU I've owned. I got tired of replacing dead hard drives, and wanted to know what was going on in that cheap metal box. Opened it up and beheld all major caps on the output side had failed, and the board was discolored from extreme heat under several major components. It was still working somewhat when I pulled it - I was one of the rare owners of that model who had theirs last over two years without blowing spectacularly.

It wasn't supposed to be stressed (it was a 250w powering a non overclocked Duron 700), but it clearly was. I couldn't overclock stable at all past 750, and it was blowing air hotter than a hair dryer. It killed three hard drives total, and the motherboard it was attached to was also dead a year later. Replaced it with a Channel Well 420w (aka Antec pp412x), and got that old Duron to 900 immediately.

I'll take a 400W Enermax over a 500W Allied/Deer anyday! :D
