Please rate this PC. This is one a screencap of a pc a coworker got. Im thinking of getting the same thing minus a few things like the extra DVD drive, video card, and 1T hard drive, TV tuner. I know the price is high but getting it through my work so wont cost me much if anything. Just looking for a great work/game pc. I dont plan on using sli so I dont need the extra vid card.

I would prefer to get something smaller case wise but just as powerful, any thoughts would be great. But still want a view on this setup to.

Thanks

WTF is a Touchpower 16db? Is that a typo for Toughpower?

Can you find out more info about the PSU?

i think you could build that for 1/2 the cost off newegg

also needs more ram and 64bit os i would not build an i7 with less then 6GB

$4k?? Haha. Jeeze, go somewhere else and transfer the data yourself.
Also a big LOL at the floppy drive.

Send me the money and I will biuld ya anything for that price and still come out ahead with a grand or so for myself. And to boot will blow that crap out of the water.

To all that replied "OMG 4k?!?!?! WTF!?!?" go back and read the fucking post again.... Or I'll quote the OP for ya: ..."I know the price is high but getting it through my work so wont cost me much if anything...."
So if OP pays NOTHING, that's a KICKASS system. Even if he had to pay 1K, that still would be a GREAT deal... So, STFU and let some body other than corporate pigs build a system for him. There are small computer shops out there that still have to make a living, ya know????!!!????

You should calm down on the steroids i think mate..

here some PC but 10x better and 1/2 the price
just pick up a nice HSF for it like the TRUE 120 and your set

I cant look at your wish list.

Trust me guys I know its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over priced but chances are Im not going to pay a dime for this. At the same time I dont want to pay that much either way. Im kind of the companies VP, I dont want my boss to waist that much on a system I can build myself thats just as good or better but cheaper. I havnt built a pc in a few yrs and just not sure what to get at this point.

I just know it needs to be fast, I can only use 32bit OS so only 3gig of ram can do and I dont mind building it myself.

why can you only use a 32bit OS?
nothing is stoping you form getting a 64bit one later and installing it
there IS NO POINT in 32bit now
and in system that high end itsgoing to be hamstrung with only 3GB of ram

Im a trader and use custom programs for my work, not one of them works with 64bit, not even in compatibility mode.

0/10 for the price.

10/10 for getting it through your work.

Win!

Since you're not paying, lets up this even more. I'd get the 6GB Corsair memory DRR3-1866 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145232), you can jump to 64-bit when your software is ready. You may as well get the 965 EE rather than the 940. I'd also get a board with good support, like the EVGA X58 one. Get a third 280 (you already chose 2) since they are so cheap right now and upgrade your PSU to the Ultra X3 1600W, it's the dopest PSU ever (http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTE4NzU1NDcyNXNzN0JabzRNakNfMl8xMF9sLmpwZw==). Maybe also get a full tower case, they have better airflow (Antec 1200 for ex.).

If it's free, then I'm not provide any more complaints. Definitely excellent choices for the money :)

Hell, if it's free who cares what it is? If you don't want it I will take it! I will pay for shipping and your time plus some extra cash! :D

Seriously! As a matter of fact, if you order a EVGA X58 and another EVGA GTX 280 SC for me I will pay you for them given you give me a little discount :D

Well Iv decided to build this myself and save a few bucks. I dont want to take advantage of the company by just throwing money away. Right now I have the price around 2100ish on newegg by taking off the items listed in the first post.

Its going to be a long time before we move our programs over to 64bit so I can only do 3gigs of ram atm but without going over the top, any other suggestions? I dont need a 1600watt PS but other reasonable suggestions would be great. Thanks

First reaction. Wow. I would expect to buy 8 computers for that. I am sure you can build this yourself and save 1000 US or more.

Also loose the floppy. Is there any point of having one these days?

Setup is pretty good...not seeing any RAM.

The price, however, is quite outrageous.

The ram is 3 GB of STT-D3 2000.

I assume it is DDR3 - 2000

BTW, I found a similar system for more than $1000 less.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229059&Tpk=DDR3 2000

I know this is different it has 260s instead of 280s, it does not have the extra 1TB (less than a $100 item) drive. But it has 2 times the memory, a blue ray player and 64 bit vista. It also has gigabit ethernet instead 100 Mbit. I am not sure why any system sold today does not have gigabit. I mean I get gigabit on $75 motherboards.

I think I want to build this myself. I just need suggestions on a good heatsink and ram or is the ram I have listed good? Other then that I think I have everything I need....

Go with the Corsair 1000HX PSU instead since it's a bit cheaper, comes with free shipping, a little more flexibility with the PCI-E connectors (Corsair has 6 x 6+2Pins PCI-E whereas the Thermaltake has 3x6Pin and 3x8Pin PCI-E connector), and 4 more SATA AND Molex connectors:
Corsair 1000HX Modular PSU - $270

RAM wise, that's a horrible price for a 3GB set of RAM, no matter what the speed. I recommend going with this significantly cheaper but not that much slower RAM set instead:
G.SKILL 3GB (3 x 1GB) DDR3 1600 RAM - $105

Heatsink wise, I recommend these:
Cooler Master V8 RR-UV8-XBU1-GP HSF - $68
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme 1366 RT - $75

CPU wise, the Core i7 940 is a poor buy IMO since it's only 333Mhz faster than the Core i7 920 but costs $270 more. That extra 333Mhz is not worth that extra $270. So I recommend dropping down to the Core i7 920.

Have you thought about dual-booting? Like one 32bit OS (Vista or XP) for your work programs and one 64bit OS (Vista) for your gaming needs?

Thanks for the recommendations, but I do a lot of gaming while Im working so that last part wouldnt work.

Ahh ok.

Mobo wise, you might want to take a look at the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 or Asus P6T Deluxe since they're a bit cheaper but offer most if not all of the features of that Eclipse mobo.

Don't get the 940. Get a 920 instead (save some money) and overclock it yourself. I got mine up to 3.57GHz doing practically nothing but raising the core clock rate (the BIOS on my board did an excellent job of controlling voltage so I didn't have to worry about that.)

Well. And turning off Speedstep.

100% stable.

i dont know ANY thing that wont run on a 64bit windows OS
unless your still dicking with like 8bit crap

really try id bet every thing works FINE

if your work stuff is that much of worry just VMware and run a 32bit XP VM on that
>.> i dont see the issue here
your getting a CPU with 8 logical CPUs and hardware VM
make use of it

Iv tried to run these programs on 64, its a no-go. As far as running VMware, I havnt done that in yrs. Not sure I want to fuck with it everyday just to run some programs and others in the reg 64.

theres nothing to mess with really once you get it setup
id give it a shot

no point in gimping the PC with only 3GB of ram when you using a VM is so easy any more

sounds like a nice job

I agree with Danny Bui about dropping down to a 920, big price difference, small performance difference. You can overclock it way past the 940 if you want to

That is if you really want to save your company money...

Ok downed the cpu to the 920, saves 250+ on that, just need to learn how to overclock it.

Im down to picking a mobo, looking at the following just not sure.

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5
ASUS P6T
Evga X58

Now the question is do you really need a 1000W power supply?

I got this ANTEC 650W 80 Plus one for around $50 on black Friday and it works great for my Q9550 system.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371015

I ask this because with the Q9550 + 6GB of ram + 5 hard drives (two more to add) + 2 tv tuners it pulls 155W under full load of all 4 cores. I know your i7 and gpu will use more power than mine but >400W more is doubtful to me.. Or is this the PFC out smarting my KillAWatt again?

Now if you are planning on dual video cards and over-clocking at the same time I can see using a 1KW supply. I recommend the much cheaper ANTEC 1000W 80 Plus

I would get the asus or gigabyte. I have had good success with both manufacturers with the many (100+) machines I have built. Not sure about the Evga.

After looking at each board. I have 1 more reason not to go evga. The chipset has a fan. In my experience at work and otherwise this fan will last less than 2 years and in most cases these small fans are hard to find. And there probably is no fan sensor so you will not know when it goes bad and if the fan was really needed it will put your board at risk during the time its dead and you do not know.

I'd go with a 750 if you're planning on OC'ing, just to give yourself headroom. If you're not doing SLI, no point in a 1000w system. Overclocking above the 940 is rediculously simple - you literally change 1 setting up to about 3.2 -3.4GHz.

As for the mobo - I like ASUS personally. Get the P6T Deluxe, and you won't be dissapointed.

As for the whole 64 bit thing - there is no reason NOT to just run a 32bit OS in a VM - VirtualBox is free and really easy to set up. Its no more difficult than installing an OS regularly. Get the 6GB of ram, run vista 64 as your main OS, and an XP 32 in a VM for the stuff that won't run on 64 bit vista. You won't regret the extra 15 mins of work you'll have to do.
