I was actively not working at work today and let my feeble mind wander about for a bit.

I very much support the giveaways as a method of recruiting new blood, and giving loyal folders a reason to keep folding (besides the obvious reasons). And I will continue to support this effort in any way I can through donations (cash or otherwise).

I was checking stats and noticed that the avg points per folder for the [H]orde was around 24K PPD. This means we have a number of loyal folders making less (in a lot of cases I looked at, much less) than 24K per day. Many making 500 to 1K ppd consistently for a long period of time. Some of these could be rogue borgs I suppose. But some are just dedicated folders plugging away.

Some of us have cast off equipment that produces orders of magnitude more.

I personally would prefer to donate cash to the giveaways and donate parts to those folks who consistently fold, but just don't have the hardware.

Does anyone have good ideas for starting a hardware drive to help raise the avg PPD by helping those with less powerful hardware?

Best I could come up with is letting people with a certain history apply for parts on a list of cast off/donated hardware. What would be a reasonable history? How to track the parts so they can browse for what they need? This might also apply to folders who have burnt out equiptment and no longer fold because they can't afford to fix what they have.

Just kicking an idea around. And I would love to get some input.

We used to have a thread dedicated to this a long time ago. I wonder if the people that produce in that category would even bother to look. I considered this before throwing away two 8800GS's. I figured nobody in their right mind would even want to split the shipping with me.

You threw them away?!

Me! Me!

I would have split shipping!

That stuff is wonderful borg fodder!

i think its a great idea, might get me to the minimum ppd needed for contests. i would like to see the ppd lowered but when talking about it in irc i was basically told that my level of commitment wasn't enough. i suppose i could buy a used 280gtx and make the minimum ppd but it would do nothing more for me than my 9600gt does now. i don't want the extra heat and noise to deal with on the machine.

so for now i fold away, just as dedicated as everyone else. i still try to recruit new members.

The above listed 8800GS would probably hit the 4k required. That is how low the requirement is. Someone threw the cards away that meet the minimum requirement.

Not hitting 4k ppd because of heat and noise issues.....
What where you planning on doing with the rig if you won it?

Damn, now I feel bad. I'm trying not to end up on that "Hoarding, Buried Alive" show and needed to get rid of a lot of crap (even my old beloved 9800PRO). To get 4K PPD out of the 8800GS, you pretty much had to have the fans maxed, which made them loud as hell. If I knew there were actually people out there that wanted this stuff, I'd rather give it to them than send it to the landfill.

my 9600gt with the shader's maxed and water cooled couldn't hit the required minimum.

if i won the rig it would be 24/7 in the basement. the power bill isn't a problem its spending the money to build the rig in the first place. the extra 10 to 20 q month on the power bill is unnoticeable but the 1500 or do to build it is a big hit to the pocket.

id rather buy food for my family than buy a 2600k. i use the internet and watch movies on my pc. no need to upgrade what i have.

im a noob to the whole folding thing and am actively finding things in my house to sell so i can get a 4p g34 someday, haha. watching my name run up the list is oddly addicting- it's almost like fantasy football.

i have started searching for people who have 2600Ks and I send them messages inviting them to fold.

i figure we'll end up with more ppd that way than relying on my C2D :D

I think this is a great idea. When I get my SR-2 running, I'll likely part with my pair of 880GT's. They're passively cooled so noise is minimal. :p And they'll turn out 5k PPD. Heck, you can play WoW and Minecraft with them too!

For every giveaway we have two threads - the announcement and the registration. Perhaps, the announcement thread can be changed to an announcement / (almost) freebie thread so there's a quick and easy spot to locate free, or close to it, hardware to get you the required PPD?

Just because someone is a "dedicated folder" does not mean that they are at all interested in ramping/optimizing. I would guess that we have a large number of folks who set up F@H for team 33 for whatever reason and have never thought about F@H again. Or, they set up the same thing they always have (uniprocessor client) on any new hardware they get. This was me for probably 5 years on a different team - something was always running F@H, but I really didn't care about output or optimization. The only reason I looked into it at all in late 2009 was that my old Athlon 64 system died and I replaced it with a Phenom II X4, and happened to wonder if there was a better way to set it up than running 4 instances of the uni client. I can easily see some not caring about loading all cores and ppd and all the other stuff that we talk about, and just setting up the graphical or screensaver client on whatever machine they have and stopping there. You aren't going to reach these people, and they would most likely not want to bother with a separate client for a graphics card even if someone sent a card to their door.

We should start a thread where people can post their needs

Once we get this rolling maybe we could get a front page post
"Free Hardware to dedicated team 33 members!"
to draw in the people who don't check in back here that often.

I'm not sure we want them coming in. We want more hardcore folders who will be sticking around

I threw out a bunch of old c2ds (and other stuff) to the horde awhile back... im into recycling...

but im with jebo... I want to give my stuff where it will be used for the horde...

I am with you guys on that. We would have some form of "application process". Forgot to throw that detail in my post. But you gotta think those guys don't hit this subforum very often.

landfill? jesus, #1 board goes for $2 a pound at the scrapper

Some interesting feedback here. I'd like to see more.
So far, I think I like Jebo's idea the best.

People are proud though. If I needed a power supply I'm more likely the collect aluminum cans until I can buy it for myself.

There has to be a way to connect serious folders with unused equipment without an influx of beggars.

What I haven't seen mentioned is the fact that scoring now, as opposed to years ago, is utterly insane. The bonus points nonsense is probably too much and the folks just don't care anymore.
Honestly, that's why I'm hardly ever in here anymore. I've been folding for over 8 years. I've done over 60,000 WUs. I was just recently passed by someone with less then 100 WUs. To me, that's like saying I've been wasting my time and resources this whole time for someone to pass me who has only been doing it a few months and it's quite a morale killer.

Just my 2 cents.

Set up a board of directors, require an application for the hardware, board reviews folding/DC history, set a limit on how much any one person can have, board votes on applications say once a month.

either that or we could just leave it in the hands of the donor. People post their needs and/or donors post what they have. Then, we just let them work it out on their own with less government spending ;)

I'm all for a free market exchange.

Works for me. I just hate to see someone get burned and pissed because a jackwagon doesn't use it to DC.

I totally agree. In my mind though, it's up to the donors to figure that out
