It looks like someone on the Geek Squad likes reading the [H]. I noticed my local Geek Squad had [H]ard|OCP displayed on one of the computers behind the counter. The only problem is, they didn’t want any proof of that fact leaking out, the store manager actually tried covering my camera when I snapped the picture. Funny stuff. ;)

Hah, whoever it was will probably be seeing this soon. They better not post it if they do though, those crazies at BestBuy will probably fire them.

Never a good idea to make your knowledge base public if you're charging for it. :)

they just cant use that cd with outdated free programs on everyones machine?

This is clearly an exemplary IT person. Anyone have any open positions? We must quickly liberate this poor soul from the mighty tentacles of the Geek Squid.

Just find all of the posts that have something along the lines of "I have a friend/nieghbor/etc who's computer is doing [insert random sympton] any ideas?" in the body. They are probably GS "techs".

Not surprising at all really given the average GS level of knowledge. Although at least in my area the Fry's computer parts area guys are way less tech savvy then the GS guys.

So, let me get this straight...they want to maintain the perception they are computer ignorant service pushing automatons INSTEAD of being tech saavy service people that are informed and current on the latest happenings in the computer world?

Steve, are you going to sue them for advertising your web site without permission? Everyone else is doing it! ;-)

Sounds about right. My cousin used to work for BB and he says that they pay so little that very few GS members have any kind of certifications. And the charge so much for their services.

At least Best Buy is not blocking the ads. More than I can say for some of you guys, you know who you are.

Your store looks oddly like my store, it may just be the same setup...

TBH I've always appreciated the fact that the HardOCP ads are at least far more relevant to my interests than the average (insert website type here).

I'm not surprised about the photo by the way, or the attempt to block it. There are good techs inside Best Buy- they just haven't found a way out of there yet.

I've yet to walk into a Best Buy that didn't look identical to any other Best Buy I've ever been in. It's really kind of unsettling, actually.

Steve: The manager actually confronted you and physically tried to stop you from taking the picture?! WTF?! What did he say and what was his reasoning? And how big was this guy anyway? Last time I checked you didn't exactly look like a little girly-man.

That manager probably has an ego, so his physical statute makes no difference. He's in his turf, he's the one with authority (from his perspective), so yeah.

Having said that, the manager does have the right to now allow pictures to be taken if he doesn't want that. As long as there wasn't physical contact, he can ask Steve to not take pictures or block anything he wants. He can ask Steve to leave, even.

It doesn't mean the guy is any less of a douchebag. Still, having messed with the guy that runs the site, well... let's just say BB HQ will be really, really displeased with that manager :D

Not necessarily. The [H] doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation with Best Buy. There was quite a stink going on for awhile about Best Buy's price match policy with their web sites and their resorting to arresting people who makes price match demands.

I dunno if it's water under the bridge though.

Well, I meant they'd be displeased with the guy since he got caught lol

I'm surprised BB hasn't been audited yet. You'd think that with all the drama that's happened (remember the GS member that took pictures with a digicam and sold it as new? things like that), a full investigation would be launched by now.

While not in defense of the MGMT, I can understand the justification for blocking pictures at least in that area.

In this case it's not a customers pc (or was it?), but look at it from the BBY position, they don't want images of customers machines out in the public, not to mention most retailers have a strict (no pictures in back of house, warehouse ) and most are the same for the floor.

Doesn't stop me from snapping pics of items I might be considering though :D

You'd think reading [H] that they wouldn't be such idiots then.

A lot of them aren't imo.

What binds so many of them is management. I know a lot of GS people that try to be honest and are knowledgeable with what they do (but are stuck there because the job market sucks), but they're severely limited because management has their collective heads so far up their ass.

That's one thing that's kept me sane in my store. They have never made me sell a load of BS to a customer, and they only make me charge for work I actually do, and they let me charge fairly.

People ask if their new PC comes with restore discs. I say no. I offer to burn them for them for $xx because it's a service we offer. Now before you start to judge, without taking a breath I also say almost verbatim the following: "Now burning those discs is easy. You hit this here start button, type "recovery" and you're good to go. You need 4 to 6 blank DVD's and a little free time, but it takes you through step by step." You'd be surprised how many customers just say, "Go ahead and do it. I want this all to be done already when I pull it out of the box!" Some say, "Sounds easy. I'll do it!" Others (especially the elderly, bless their hearts) say, "I really can't afford it or don't want to pay for it, but can you show me how to do it?" I show them on the spot. Some of them will STILL pay me to do it. Those that don't save their dollars and happily take their computer with them, and now they know that they need to burn those discs right away in case they eff up their machine with P2P crap or something.

I've NEVER been called out by management for doing this, even if I do it right in front of them. It offers a service that can potentially make Best Buy money. It educates customers on the wisdom of burning those discs. And the best part is that it usually takes less than a minute or two.

However, I know not all stores are like this. There are some customers that came in last Saturday with some laptop issues. They drove all this way (two hours!!!), even though they have a store much closer to their home, because they got treated like crap at their store. They bought the service plan on their laptop, and the service plan covers the cost of a FULL diagnostic, even if the problem is software related. Says that in writing! They wouldn't even run the diagnostic on their computer without charging money. I checked it in for a diag and billed it to their service plan like what we're supposed to do. Crap like that pisses me off.

I've gone into other best buy stores myself and been treated poorly. Some have treated me quite well, like the one in Billings. Good folks up there, for the most part. But there was a store in New Mexico that couldn't care less about me, even when they didn't know I was currently a Best Buy employee ... And I watched them treat other customers the same way.

Grrr ... I really like my store, and we really do make every effort to treat customers fairly. And you know what? We do really really well, business wise. You can make money without screwing people. Just do a good job, sell things for good prices, and take care of people. Our store is continuously successful. Our whole store, managers and hourlies have gotten almost all our bonuses in the last three years.

Sorry for the long rant, but some of you know how I feel ....

The problem is, what if their customers learned something? Best Buy would be out of business then.

I bet you a million dollars there is enough drones to screw up their computers for Best Buy to turn a profit.

BTW does anyone here go to Best Buy for anything? Last time I bought Civilization 5 I couldn't use my gift card # and PIN, so I had to order from the store, and wait 15 minutes for the order to process...... how does anything get done?

*Salutes SirK*

All I can say is... If more of BB's stores' teams were the experience/atmosphere you describe, I'd actually be willing to spend money there. =)

Also, thanks to you (and *esp* the leadership) for doing what you do.
Real customer service shows.

Exactly what I was saying in the 'other' thread!

the photo is staged.

Yup, I asked the big hair lady to bend over in front of me as I took the picture ;)

That was you Steve? :p

LOL!

@ Steve. Did he actually make contact with you? I think the asshole would have bought and paid for then. I know you took it lighthearted but to me this is actually enough to make my blood boil. The story to start with and then this...

What did the manager say? Just that you can't take a pic?

The manager was actually a pretty small guy, he just quick stepped (don't want to say "ran") over to me and threw his hand out over the camera and said "is there something I can help you with?" I just giggled like a retard and said "no." He turned his back to me and turned off that monitor (like the rest of the systems in the GS area).

If I would have been thinking fast, I would've said..."Do you guys fix cameras?" :D

that would have been epic. ;)

You should had said "Yeah. Thats my website, Now Pay up":D

It is possible...but...NO ONE should ever be embarrassed to be an [H] reader!

If any [H]'er runs into me in public PLEASE introduce yourself, I'll be the first one to buy you a beer / lunch (guaranteed, no joke).

I wonder if he reads [H] himself and actually recognized you and felt embarrassed or something for some strange reason ....

maybe they were reading the headline about them charging for a free update
