Hello fellow [H] members.

i was thinking of buying a raid card controller that does 6MB and sata III

looking to build a raid 5 array. right now i'm going to have a total of (4) 2TB if i can grab another 2 off the forums without burning a hole in my pocket and hopefully another 2tb comes up somewhere.

anyways.... what type of raid card controller should get to fit this description or if anyone has any idea's on how i should build a system to back up my data on my 2TB Raid 0 hdd's.

Well what 2TB hard drives do you have now?
Are you looking for fast transfer speeds of data?
What OS will be you using?
Will this RAID controller be part of a seperate file server/NAS or in your main PC?

Ok, do note this: RAID IS NOT BACKUP! All it does it guarantee the uptime of your data in the event of hard drive failure. RAID does not protect against accidental or malicious deletion, corruption, infection, or modification of your data. An actual backup is a copy of the data stored on a seperate and/or medium from the main source data. i.e like an external hard drive, NAS, file server, cloud storage, online storage, etc.

It's worth it, especially if you can get it cheaply.

I would go with an LSI 9260-8i. I've built many servers with this card and it works great.

Look into ZFS.

Either FreeNAS or Napp-It.

It's not 6mb, it's 6Gb, aka 6Gbps or SATA-III, just fyi.

IBM M1015s work well - you *might* need to flash to IT-mode if you are using OpenIndiana/Solaris Express and experience stability issues. It has PCIe 2.0 support and can handle 3 TB drives. Unfortunately, they seem to be hard to find at the $75 price point I was very lucky to get them at a couple of months ago (private sale).

If you will only stick with 2 TB drives, IBM BR10i cards could be had for cheap, or the many other LSI 1068E chip variants. But they are only PCIe 1.0 cards, but with your 4 drive requirement should be doable as long as you have an 8x slot available.
