I have been using onboard RAID for a few years now, Intel, Promise, and currently nVidia MediaShield. I need some advise, would a good RAID card be much better than the integrated RAID controller?
 
RAID 0 requires no calculations.. So the only benefit of a hardware RAID card would be it's cache.. It'd be like using a semi truck to pull a camper because it has a bigger gas tank. Yes you get the advantage of the bigger gas tank, but you don't need the power of the huge engine.

Is it worth it? Probably not.

Been here 7 yrs? If you been around a forum that is as well informed as this one for that long, then I know I have my answer. I dug into pretty deep myself last night so I understand your big tank explanation a little better. A really good RAID Card can cost $400.00-$800.00. That has to mean one thing, server, and were not talking about RAID0 either. Thank you.
 
RAID 5 is a very attractive solution for home users and it benefits greatly from a hardware based card.

It'd be nice to have one of those to play with. :)

What your saying is true in regard to RAID5. I read about it and even tried to set it up about a year ago. Somewhere along the line I got confused with the explanation that was was given and gave up. I'll look into it some more, thank you Old Hippie.

RAID5 can be a pain in the butt if the controller isn't helpful. God, I spent about 5 hours one night trying to add a disk to my Perc 5/i RAID! But setting up is usually pretty easy... most of them are plug, select "RAID 5" and play. What were you using to try this?

And, for good measure, you only need a dedicated card for RAID 5 or 6; 0 and 1 have no calculations as Lazn said, but 5 and 6 use lots of XOR calculations that can really bog down your system.

I had to back track a little and I think its been closer to 2 years since I tried setting up RAID5 because at the time I was using the integrated Promise RAID Controller on my P4P800-E Deluxe which has been retired, or given to my son I should say. I'm now using the integrated nVidia MediaShield which is much easier than the old stuff. I think I might research it some more to get a better feel of what I'm doing and give it another try.
 
You'll still have to do back-ups, but it would be a nice way to run some screaming little 150GB VRs.

You're getting into a little bit of cash with a set-up like that.

That's why my next storage upgrade won't happen 'till the decent SS units hit 350-400 USD.

I guess it all depends on how big of bulge you have in your wallet! :D

Seem like the bulge is never be big enough, This computer stuff is like a pit with no bottom.

Haha. Tell me about it. And now it seems SATA3 (or whatever we're supposed to call it) is coming quicker than expected. So be careful how much you drop on a pricey SATA2 controller.

Thanks for the heads up. I bought my E8500, a week later the E8600 is out.....I give up, can't beat these people.
