Rage sucks

RAGE doesn't have great textures but the game 'looks' good to me. There's more to the visual appeal that simply textures. Design, art style, ambiance, etc. all go into 'look' and have nothing to do with how high res the textures are.

I agree to a vast extent with you. However, since this is an id product and they have a reputation to uphold and live up to in the graphics arena, there is no excuse for them to have taken the lazy route and port in the shit console textures into the PC version. No excuse. With even a little effort on their part...the PC version could have been, and should have been, much more graphically appealling. In many aspects, it looks worse than GLQuake, imo!

Other than the shitty, blurry, and cartoon-like textures, my only other problems with Rage are it's too small of a game world and not enough storyline content, and that equation equals a game that becomes repetitive and boring. It seems that there was so much that could have been added to the game to alleviate this and make it one for the history books...but the game feels like it is just a different genre of Freelancer with how repetitive and limited it is.

That's my synopsis of Rage, anyway.

I think one reason Rage might look good to some people is because it runs at 60fps. There are a lot of PC gamers that have long gone for lower framerates just so they can enable things like AA.
If you're used to 30-40 FPS and see 60FPS in action, it looks pretty impressive. It's one other reason Call of Duty is sometimes lauded for graphics on the consoles. It's lousy in stills, but at 60FPS it looks nice in motion.

The problem with Rage is that too much of it is played at a snail's pace...meaning you can't help but notice how blurry and ugly the game is in about 1/2 of the areas.

I dunno, I can run a lot of games at 60 FPS...many of which look and play a LOT better than Rage.

I can see your point for "generic" PC gamers running on mediocre hardware, but here at [H]...

His point is out of place here. I try to play at 120 FPS which RAGE does not allow for some crazy reason. Textures are low res and there's little geometry, yet general art is the best I've seen so far.

Snail's pace you say? Really? RAGE is literally the ONLY game released recently (since ~2004) that allows you to strafe jump, ramp jump and generally play like a real gamer. Damn, when did so much old school gamers degrade into victims of self-playing, story driven, QTE filled modern AAA FPS games.

I also appreciate the art direction in rage and feel it's the best I've seen. If it were higher res I think more people would appreciate it...

Call me crazy, but I have actually been enjoying the game recently playing through the single player. I only run at 1080 so it looks fine to me.

It's like a not so polished Borderlands lol.

Enjoying if none the less, especially for what I paid for it on a steam sale.

RAGE is easily the best looking FPS to date. And the best in gameplay, relative to other recent AAA shooters.

LOL, texture popping and a whole 300MB of VRAM used, oh yeah, such a badass title. :D

actually it uses a ton of vram but yeah it has the worst textures by far of any modern game. having to watch those ugly ass textures slowly load just makes it even more of joke. anyone that thinks RAGE is the best looking game does not have an opinion worth listing too. liking the art direction is one thing but for him to say something like that is just beyond silly.

I rarely experience texture popping, despite using high sensitivity. Though I scarificed a whole minute in the cfg file to fix this issue. Imagine that. Horrible, I know!

Still not as bad as Aliens: CM without the DX mod. ;)

This game is vastly superior to Aliens: CM.

More than once I've stated this: I never was on the Rage hate list. I simply thought when it came out it was highly dubious at full asking price and I still feel that Borderlands 1 and especially 2 do "this" better.

These days? It's a solid purchase at the asking prices. I'd honestly forgotten there was even DLC. I may have to take it for a spin before long.

I love how this thread gets resurrected every few months :p

I like how Rage forced a 60fps framerate and I like what they were initially trying to do with the game before Borderlands stole all of their thunder. Beyond that, there aren't too many positives.

Ahh Steam sale brought this back again eh?

I enjoyed it the whole way through.

And then came the ending.

And I RAGED!

Absolute worst ending ever.

EVER. RAGE!

decent game after they fixed the texture loading issues...better then decent in fact...getting it for cheap is a steal

I picked this up a while ago but just got around to playing it recently. I had pretty low expectations going in, but so far have been pleasantly surprised. Game runs great with all settings cranked up, although I do still get the occasional texture pop in when I turn. The gameplay is mostly standard shooter fair, but definitely a step up from Doom 3.. but not quite as fun as Borderlands. Fun game and definitely worth the $5 it's been on sale for.

I still think Borderlands killed Rage while it was still in development.
They took roughly the same idea, concept, setting, etc. and did it much better than id, who (as usual) seemed to be more interested in their engine than the game they wanted to show it off with.
I can only imagine the first time they saw Borderlands and Carmack and CO. saying "Oh shit...we dawdled around too long and someone made a much better version of our concept in 1/4 of the time."
Short of maybe vehicle controls, Borderlands did literally everything Rage did about 5X better.

I beg to differ. The game sucks from beginning to end, no other game I can even come close to saying that about. The ending should go down as the worst ever, the story and writing were below subpar, it is perhaps the most linear game ever, and the graphics complete crap.

Now I'm sure the graphics have been fixed, but the rest can not be and that alone cause the game to still suck.

Borderlands sucked to me. After killing 100 stupid dogs and looking though little piles in the first game I uninstalled it and gave it back to my Brother..
No interest in the second after the whole Aliens CM fiasco

for $5 or whatever the game is currently going for on Steam it's definitely worth it...yes the ending sucked but most game endings suck...the graphics were excellent once the texture issues were fixed (up close the textures still looked bad in places but overall it was stunning in places)...I played it after the patches and enjoyed it...the vehicle parts were fun but felt a bit disconnected from the main game...overall a short but above average game that had the potential to be better...to say it's not worth $5 is crazy...even bad games can be enjoyed if the price is cheap enough

I played Rage from beginning to end. When you make it to the first town it's pretty clear that they likely envisioned the game as being a little more "RPG-like" but like everything else in the game, id half-assed that.
I kept going as I was curious where they were going. There were random moments that weren't too bad, but they were fleeting and never fleshed out.
...and then the game just randomly ends about 2 minutes after giving you the game's final weapon and before you really even have much time to use it. No final boss, no explanation of anything, it just ends.
Just like most other overblown games, it feels like they had a good concept but at some point someone told them that game better be in retail THIS YEAR. From there they ended up finishing it one step away from Big Rigs style.

Bahahahahahaha I feel exactly the same way. I really enjoyed the game up until the worst game ending EVER!!!

I liked it. (it's fun to come back here every once in a while and say that.)

After the graphics were patched and the game smoothed out......

It isn't earth-shattering like it was marketed, and it was a console specific game, and the ending was dumb............

But overall more of it was fun than not, IMO.

I do agree, Borderlands concept was done better by Borderlands.:D

It's not hard to see how it got such a bad rep, with the initial texture loading issues and the worst ending for a supposed triple A title ever.

That being said, I played through it on 8800GTXs (768MB mem each), and I think what saved me from having any texture issues was twin SSDs in RAID 0. Made it possible to load the textures pretty damn quickly on the fly.

The problem I had with the textures was inconsistency rather than pop-in. Some textures, like those used for people, were really well done and crystal clear. Then that person would be standing next to a pipe that looked like they ripped the texture and model out of Goldeneye for the N64.

Nevertheless, up until the completely shit ending, I had a lot of fun playing the game. I don't think it ended too early, just very very poorly. For god's sake, there isn't even a final boss or something similarly epic.

As for Borderlands, I think it may have caused RAGE to be rushed, but I don't think Borderlands is any better in gameplay. Atmosphere and writing yea, but gameplay meh.

IMHO, Borderlands 2 is a 1000x better than Borderlands or RAGE.
