R9 290X CrossFire performance....

Lol no. RAM limitations has never been the primary causal factor of scaling in Crossfire configurations... ever.

As has been pointed out already, VRAM limitations aren't a problem for multi-GPU scaling. If you are hitting the VRAM limit you are hitting the VRAM limit - assets are mirrored on both cards, it makes no difference if you have 1 or 4. And trust me, you will know when you are. It's a massive FPS drop in most causes, and constant hitching/stuttering in the others (more noticeable than microstutter).
 
FWIU, there's more bandwidth available across the pci-e3 slot than the crossfire fingers. That was the problem with Eyefinity crossfire not scaling well. Showing these results on 4K demonstrates they've fixed it. Hopefully any crossfire stuttering above 2560*1600 as well.
 
There are people that have much better setup than me....I didn't spend $900 on my u2412m, it was around $600 and I spend 3 months lurking for sale....For the 2x 290x, I'm selling my old <insert stuff>...So it's not that expensive if you're willing to sell your old stuff and wait for sales.
I'm sure there are but that doesn't mean that your monitor set up is common at all. This is a PC enthusiast site so stuff like that will not be unheard of here but will be rare anywhere else. That you were personally able to get a deal like that on your monitor set up is great for you but that you had to wait 3 months deal hunting only reinforces how unusual your set up is. ~$900 is what it'd cost for anyone else to go out and get those monitors now and you can't judge commonality at all based on rare or once in a blue moon deals. Most people also either aren't willing to sell that much stuff or don't have that much stuff to sell to fund $1-1,400 in video cards either. Most people won't even run SLI/CF.

As for 4k panels, Asus have a 39" VA that will be affordable. Why I said months is because the 4k movement is picking up steam just like 1080p back then.
Duuuuude that ASUS monitor is going to probably be pushing $5,000 when it comes out, maybe more. Even if it went for half that, which would be nearly a grand less than their 31" 4K monitor that has been out for a few months now so very unlikely, it still wouldn't be affordable. 4K is waaay to new to be seeing the big enough price drops we'd need for it to be affordable in a few months or even a year. 2-3 years is lots more realistic. Heck maybe even optimsitic. Look at how many years it took for 1080p to become affordable and common place.

IIRC since at least the 4xxx cards when it worked CF tended to have good 2 card scaling. Its when you got to 3 or 4 cards that diminishing returns kicked in hard. I wouldn't be to optimistic that would be fixed this time around either unfortunately. 3 or 4 290/x's are probably going to chew up a heck of a lot of PCIe bandwidth trying to talk back and forth to each other to coordinate operations, wouldn't mind being wrong here though even if I'll never use 3-4CF set up. The OC article was more interesting in that they had pricing for the 290/x and it seems to suggest that all the launch cards at least will be using the same reference VRM set up and RAM.
 
The 4XXX cards didn't have very good hardware support for anything over two gpu's. I had the same problem with three which is why I sold one and stuck with two for so long before I upgraded to the seven series. I honestly should of waited because I could of gotten the GTX670 a week after I bought my card for cheaper for similar performance but I'm still happy with the purchase, no buyers remorse.

Do you mean as a common place standard?
For me, next gen is not something that seems simply derivative of GCN 1.0
It's a 7970, + shaders, rops, tmus & wider bus etc. Same architecture just with a larger footprint. Same as 680 to 780/Titan, not next gen. Simply the best that kepler (GCN2.0 in this case) can be if not confined to a certain tdp, die size, market price.
I simply don't see why anyone would think that R9 290x should be able to "max out" current games at 4k res as it still is in it's infancy. Again R9 290 is to AMD what Titan was to Nvidia, a halo product using the best their GCN 1.0 arch could offer.
As for 4k, I should have elaborated. Yes, it won't happen for a long time. Although 4k seems to be a great halo type standard to aim for going forward. Kind of the same way that 2560x1600 was, and just about still is the holy grail of desktop gaming resolution.
It's nice to see [H] get a slick panel, 4k gets more exposure and more people would consider it over surround type setups for ease of use, if they have the horsepower.
