r520 delayed??

there is no way you can say nVidia is the leader when all of it's new adopted technologies are only useful in SLI mode.

If you want a single powerful card ... look no further than ATi. This is what they're working on. Yes, dual cards is a great thing when you're rendering something not when you're playing a game@1600x1200 .. My X800XT PE can handle it well. Not only that but it will probably last a long time too.

I really don't understand the enthusiasm over dual card setup or PS3.0 right now. Seriously what's the big deal ?

The big deal simply is that the market is demanding it and that ATI is loosing market and mindshare to its direct competition (Nvidia).
New technology is always great and i'd rather have it than not especially for the same price.
Where is the point in buying a X800pro or XL if i can have a 6800GT at the very same price range.
Where is the point in buying a X700pro when the GF6600GT simply destroys it?

I imagine Hate_Bot is crying in a corner somewhere...Hate...where are ya?

all I have to say is dammit...I hate waiting for new toys...

I think it's kind silly to make such a marketing decision...but it does make me think that maybe AMR is finally ready to ship...or getting close...and personally I think ATi needs AMR and R520 at the same time to really make a difference...cuz if AMR is only a little bit faster than SLi...people aren't just going to throw out their nvidia-based motherboards to get a 5% speed boost...

Well if what the Inq says is true, that the G70 is done and the R520 is delayed.....ATI could be in some deep doo doo.

On another note, NVIDIA already supports 3Dc. It was included in a recent forceware release.

Are you kidding me? Speak for yourself. As soon as i can get a non ASUS ATI MVP ready board this things going in the trash. ATI's chipsets have shown some absolutly amazing overclocking promise and features. Nforce 4 on the other hand still needs a few months of bios revision before i'd call it completely stable under stress.

Ok let me rephrase...except for the ATi !!!!!!s...nobody is going to dump their nforce boards for ATi for a 5% boost...not just because the nforce platform has more features, stability, and is just a stronger brand name at this point...but also because it's not worth investing in a whole new system if you just built an nforce4 rig...

I'm just saying to win back the business they've lost in the past 6 months, they need something dramatic...

really???

it's just a driver hack...it will be in hardware in G70...well maybe hack is a bit harsh...basically they support it in the driver...which I would imagine isn't as fast as hardware...

It's too bad if Nvidia supports 3Dc now, because ATi was supposed to release it for their earlier generation cards. It looks promising in my opinion (the technology) but I don't really get what it does over overly lit specular lighting

Currently NV4x can run 3Dc since at least the 67.xx drivers. This is through software emulation which will allow you to play games using 3Dc. True hardware support is not due until the G70 release

personally.. I would rather have it delayed then ATI telling us it's released with no one able to get one. Then.. by the time it's released and there are a lot of other high end decent cards for a lot cheaper... the only one being gouged is early adopters... but that's the price you pay for early adopting. lol. I just hate being ripped off due to shortages.

Bummer for ATI, this will hurt them.

Not that nVidia's SLI 'lead' is mainstream, necessary or (any other argument). It's all about the penis size. Same in any market, look at autos for example:

"Most room in class." "Most HP in class." "Best DVD player in class." "JD Power & Associates award." (<--- Read: We got them the best hookers this year.)

And not a word about quality or value.

Same applies to GPUs, perception is the key. Real world performance, feasibility and price are secondary.

Let's see, so you want to go with a lesser manufacturer than Asus, good call and then you want to go with a chipset that doesn't even exist yet from a company that's made what one or two chipsets in the past? And those really weren't stellar either. They weren't bad but I'd hardly say it was anything special as far as enthusiests were concerned.

Good luck with that plan.

NForce 4 is stable under stress and so is my A8N-SLi. I don't know what the deal is with yours. The NForce 4 chipset is good for overclocking and finally the latest drivers put the chipset where it needs to be. Yes the A8N-SLi is not that great an OC'er. It was also the first board of its kind. It is true that the A8N-SLi is one of the worst boards Asus has ever made in the last several years for OC'ing. Stock its perfectly stable.

It had a rough start, but if you think that an MVP ATi chipset will be any better, I wouldn't bet on that. As its not likely to happen. Not from a company that has made very few chipsets over the years.

If both R520 and G70 are taped out. And the R520 backed out, do you think it would be wise for nVidia to do the same? With the pressure eased, it might be okay to delay the G70 as well and improve it some more. I would recommend that the G70 come out only after ATI releases the R520.

If the G70 were to come out first, R520 would come out soon after, clocked differently from the original specs, just enough to keep it about 5% higher than tha G70. Same goes the other way. Remember the inconsistent clockspeed's when the 6800 and x800 came out?

What makes me laugh SOOOO much is the amount of ppl who think this is gospel!!

'ATi are in the shite...'

'Way to go ATi...'

etc

Yes the inquirer have been known to be close to the mark occasionaly, but until we see the same on a few other sites, then it's rumour...not the pope's word.

If the inquirer said Elvis lives would that be gospel also?

No suprise of the identity of the OP......next we'll be told that R520 doesn't have PS3.0 and ATi are truly fucked cos it's SOOOOOO important ;)

They have been making chipsets since 2002, so i have no idea what you're talking about. Do you remember the Nforce1? How about the Nforce 2 release? Didnt think so. How about the Nforce 3 silicone disaster? As far as this release goes, DFI boards have problems with stability still under high OC's that prove stable under tests. The asus board is for some unknown reason forced to run in 2T by default and 2T under any decent overclock which is completely unacceptable. The Nforce4 has had anything but a perfect launch and i'd say its got quite awhile and maybe even a second revision before all the things are worked out.

Obviously, i plan to buy ATI's dual card setup, i never planned to go SLI. Had it as an option but my mind is pretty much made up. I will happily take an ATI RS480 chipset since i have used the Xpress 200 and found it great. Its actually had a very decent but unknown launch Have you ever used any ATI based motherboards? Didnt think so.

I overclock, i also prefer ATI hardware (duh), so thats two very key things for me that this motherboard can either never do or completly failed on.

People, such as yourself, have no clue, and have never used ATI's chipsets ever, so you assume that with this very open and known about release, that its their first real motherboard. People such as yourself will also find yourselves very mistaken in assuming this. ATI has done an excellent job with motherboards in the past for how new to the game they are, i expect nothing but the same. I dont expect perfection right off, infact i'v noticed that every new chipset needs at least 6 months to work out issues before they fix small things, but Nforce 4 still has very big issues and its been out for 5 months.

As is the case with most things...the more people that use a product, the more problems are found with it. Take firefox for example, it was considered air-tight...till it hit 50 million downloads...now they're releasing patches almost as often as IE.

So if you've gotten the impression that ATI's motherboards aren't as buggy as nvidia's...it's likely because nobody is using them...or at least nobody that would notice...(because nvidia is dominating the market)...because their big thing was integrated video, so they were targeted at the low-end...

I'm not saying that ATi doesn't make quality boards...I'm just saying that they are the dark horse and nvidia has the established name in the motherboard scene...so while you are ready to jump over to ATi hardware...I think you'll find the vast majority prefers a more tested platform on which to base their system...

And could you enlighten me as to what the "major issues" are with nforce4?

Even though this is probably true (damn you marketing!) Admit it, you're in tears. It's ok...we understand...you can tell us.

So what do you think Hate...given the decision to go to AMR first vs R520 do you still think R520 will be faster than SLI 6800Ultras? Don't you think if it was fast enough they would release it first and skip AMR?

nforce 2 was the absolute shit.. it had a few sound problems .. but still the shit.

nforce 3.. well.. i really dont know a lot about it. just never really interested me.

nforce 4 is pretty nice.

plus if you use an nforce board w/ an nvidia card you get an extra little boost from what nvidia says since they can optimise the drivers for both to work better w/ each other.

What games? There are no games with 3Dc support yet. Farcry had a beta feature and didn't really do anything with 3Dc (higher quality maps) to see if any impact would occur.
Serious Sam 2 is seeming to be the first game with true 3Dc support and "effects" (meaning visual impact)

So until then, the "hack" might not even really be a hack.

I never really expected to be abl to get this card in July anyways, I always thought that September is when I would start seeing it pop up, so it doesnt make any diffrence,

My friend is giving me a cheap card (I believe a 9600 or 9700 pro) for $80 or so, and that should hold me for a while ;)

Actually I do remember the NForce 1 and 2 launch. I don't assume I've never used any ATi chipset based boards. Because I have. I've used the Radeon Express 200 chipset and its not bad. But it doesn't impress me enough to buy it.

The NForce 3 Silicone disaster I also remember. However it was corrected quickly. ATi's chipsets have lacked features and have never gained wide acceptance. They aren't bad, but they have never produced chipsets in the quanities of say Nvidia or Intel.

So even If I've forgotten some lesser known chipsets from ATi that doesn't mean that they have near the experience of the afore mentioned Intel and Nvidia chipset makers. VIA, SIS, ALi have all been doing it longer and have more chipsets out there.

Many people have been able to achieve great overclocks from NForce 4 based systems. There are issues with some early boards such as the A8N-SLi Deluxe. That however is clearly motherboard implimentation and not the chipset. As none of the other boards suffer from the 1T issue that the Asus does. One instance where Asus has fallen down on the job.

Asus is one of the largest makers of motherboards on the planet and for good reason. Their quality is second to none. Of course they do like any mobo maker faulter from time to time. The A8N-SLi isn't perfect. But it is stable and does work at 1T with some memory modules at stock and to a small degree overclocked.

My comments are because going with a non-Asus board with a ATi chipset that has yet to be released, when the facts aren't even out yet about such a board is foolhardy. Its ATi !!!!!!sm at its finest. To assume that its better than established products simply because it has the word Radeon associated with it. .

But don't assume I haven't used something. Because I've used damn near every chipset out there at one time or another. You've got no idea what I do for a living.

You are correct about them making more chipsets, than the one I could remember off hand.

In my opinion everyone that makes chipsets does so poorly compared to Intel. Intel chipset drivers are perfrect or near perfect on release day. Something every other chipset maker should strive for.

Slant on Asus all you like, your experience with them isn't so good. That's fine. To say what you've said about the NForce 4 chipset itself is not accurate. Not when many people have had zero problems with that chipset.
