Ok.. quick fast question needed. for example my friend wants to sell me his
Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition PCI-Express , and im using this videocard on my gaming rig , i am hoping to achieve to play WoW / BF2 / CoD2 / Fear / Oblivion.. at max-settings with NO lag. is it possible? ( maybe through previous owners using the x8xx lines? ) i appreciate.. just this SMS3.0 makes me think the x850xtpe will do bad because it isnt effected with it.. and do games like what i listed above ^^ need SMS3.0?

thnx best regards,
john

BF2...it can be done.

I have a X800XT clocked at 585 and 1200 and BF2 on high is ok...but I like to run everything at medium except textures and texture filtering at high and veiw distance at high. That way, my FPS stay up around 100 most of the time.

With FEAR, I can't remember for sure what my settings were, but I think they were on high and it was ok in like the 40's to 80's.

FEAR will be at 2XAA 4XAF medium settings and no soft shadow for 50-60 FPS.......my best friend has that card, and I help him at LANs so i know what he runs for the game

If you want to run Oblivion at max settings with that card...you're dreaming (albeit a very nice dream :p ).

The others may be possible, but Oblivion really lays it down even for the high end cards like x1900's and 7900's. To get max settings, you may have to drop the res to 1024 or below. For example, I have an x1800xt 512mb that runs at 733mhz on the core, 1600mhz ddr. I can run Oblivion @ 1280x1024 (LCD limit) with MOST settings at or very near the top except for grass, shadows, AA, etc. I think Oblivion defaults my system to Ultra quality @ a res of 1024x768 (which i can still bump to 1280x1024 and still play fine).

oh well i am concerned mainly into CS:S / WoW / BF2 / CoD2 .. i wont play fear/oblivion seriously but i would like to see results with all maxsettings.. so te x850xtpe will run wow/bf2/cod2/cs:s for sure maxsettings good fps?

Three of those four games almost necessitate a pretty speedy cpu and at least a GB of ram. You didn't mention you overall system but it would be to your definite advantage if you had a 3Ghz+P4 or a 2.2Ghz+ AMD

3500+ Socket939 newcastle core 2.2ghz

1gb ram value select (512mb x2) pc3200 ddr 400

None of the games you play use SM3.0.

Biggest help in BF2 is 2gb of ram. I have an X850XT OC'd to 550/590, and I run at faux 1680x1050 with everything on high, and it does fairly well in 64 player maps. Flying in a helicopter is a chore though, super choppy :(

As aforementioned you're very borderline for NO lag especially on BF2 with that ram. CPU is decent enough. Yeah don't overly hype SM 3, again in your list of games its a non-issue. Going to 2GB's ram is going to help your system across the boards. How much is your friend selling the 850 for? Of course you'll just have to try and see how your games perform with the 1GB of ram you got.

Also you didn't mention your desired gaming resolution. 1024 you'll be sailing smoothly with max settings. 1280 is your yellow zone especially with BF2. Anything above 1280 might be compromising with Max AA

Short answer no. what you need is a X1900XT for what your asking for, you will need to lower settings and loose the AA. Also even with a High end gfx card your still let down by the rest of your system, ideally you want 2GB of memory especially for BF2 and a somewhat faster CPU.

Hmm.... i heard that SM3.0 is just disabled unless the writers made an SM2.0 backup for all the X800 series cards.

yeah he got sli cards . so yeah he doesnt use it on his machine.. but was curious if i can run maxsettings on cod2/bf2 no lag. possbily no AA or AF

even still...if it's better than the card you have...then why not? Hell...it's only $50. If you don't like it...EBAY it and get $150.

Might run into a few issues running CoD2 with max settings at 1280x1024, but that card is litterally overkill for just about everything else you stated

lack of SM3.0 support on the X800 series has yet to prove to be a downside to the release

Hmm.... i heard that SM3.0 is just disabled unless the writers made an SM2.0 backup for all the X800 series cards.

no game has yet to be coded entirely using SM3.0, and probably won't be for a long time, we might see the support entirely skipped in favor of the new standards set in DX10 when vista is released and MS pushing their product heavily. If the game has SM3.0 extentions (which are supposedly used entirely for performance right now) and your card does not support it, it will not use it.

CS:S / WoW / BF2 / CoD2

overkill for the bolded, CSS practically runs at max on a 6600GT already, BF2 will run more then decent on a 6600GT, WoW can be ran on a GF2 (nuf said), those games aren't very demanding

FEAR it would do decent in, like in CoD2, oblivion it would have a tough time, that game has so many options its rediculous to state what you wanted it to run as

Lack of SM3.0 support has ZERO to do with lack of HDR support in oblivion, lack of FP16 HDR which is outside the spec of DX9c standard is something supported specifically by the 6800series and up, and the X1k series.

If you wont buy the card for $50.00, then something is wrong with you. Hey, give me the guy's number, I'll buy it...

lol its already shipped to me i bought it.. but as for
